  1. metaverse? on Michael Abrash Joins Oculus, Calls Facebook 'Final Piece of the Puzzle' · · Score: 1

The real trouble with this is that they're envisioning a Snow Crash-like metaverse, and I'm envisioning Second Life with Facebook friends and goggles. The flying cocks are going to look amazing this time.

Here's an idea. Turn the cameras to the drawing board. Make a drawing for the harsh robot art critic. The robot will indicate its distaste by drawing a large cock and balls over what you've just drawn. That's just for you, though, since the robot will quickly remove your awful art so that it doesn't soil the world's eyeballs with its awfulness.

What slays me is that your blog is no different than millions of other blogs, detailing the mind-numbing minutiae of your day-to-day life. One of your posts is about writing a post, for shit's sake. If you have to sit and think about what you're going to write, maybe you shouldn't write anything at all and wait for something interesting to happen instead. This is the problem with blogs and why any "blogger" can expect a stellar 20-40/wk readership consisting mainly of close family members. Show me a guy getting donkey punched in the sack, add a gong sound-effect and wacky graphics, and if it turns out hilarious expect your hits to increase drastically.

True, but eventually solid state may dominate. Until then, a good compromise would be a hybrid hd. With an onboard flash cache, disk usage drops over 90 percent, and you still get throughput comparable to a 5400 rpm disk.

Anxiety is a function of living beings, not stress. Just as I can stress your arm into breaking I can stress your machine with a hammer, but the machine won't cry about it.

Step out of your routine and understand that many stressors are societal contrivances, it is your response to them, i.e. anxiety, that you have to control.

  8. On universality of mathematics on The Golden Ratio · · Score: 1

I haven't read the book, but I would like to know what the conclusion about mathematics not being an extra-terrestrially universal idea is based on. Here's another thought, not too original, but given what we know about Mathematics as a universal cultural phenomenon on Earth not a difficult one to arrive at: It has become apparent that every culture has in some sense created a system of mathematics, whether to organize dependencies, patterns, order, and tools for comparison of magnitude. Basically, cultures have tended to spawn organizing systems, which are in essence mathematical. The lack of such a system would suggest the lack of ability of abstraction of patterns, etc., which would suggest a creature without the means for formal reasoning. If we seek a dialogue between us and the inhabitants of another world, they will certainly have to decypher or reason out our messages (e.g. the golden record aboard the voyager 1), which would then suggest an ability to reason, and understand mathematical ideas. I suppose then we can't know for sure whether mathematics is universal or not until we hear back from whatever is out there. It just seems arrogant to assume that Mathematics is a uniquely human invention. Maybe someone who has read the book can provide some insight into its conclusions.

    *** Breaking News ***
All the world's problems solved today when a physicist emerged from his smoky basement "thinking room". Following a fit of uncontrollable giggling he announced plans to end war, poverty, and power struggle on planet Earth by placing solar collectors on the moon's surface and beaming energy to earth via a system of directed microwaves and orbiting redirectors. He then told reporters of two other revolutionary inventions: S'more Mountain and MagnifiPizza.

    It's all bullshit.
