    or at least the sharing part..

    They do make it easy to download the movies by giving out 3Mb/s, but they do hinder the sharing of the content by capping ups at 128Kb/s.

    Sure, with the advent of distributed downloads, bit torrent, etc, the bandwidth hit itsn't that big, but its certainly become a hassle to share those 4.7 GB files if it takes you 8 hours to get it and 150 hours to share it.

    Its sad that most peeople don't realize how simple something like this is. As a former interface designer I tried to push this on a day to day basis. Most programmers couldn't grasp the concept of architecting a system so it fits into layers. These are the folks who should have been left behind after the .com bust.

    But what do I know, I'm just a glorified HTML guru.

    For those not familar, it makes gamecube games that are LAN compatable work over the internet. Its a beautiful thing.

    Thats a horrible way to rationalize it. Your average american family does not use linux as a home operating system. Of the 80 million users connecting to the internet from home, I am willing to bet that more than 80% use a windows OS. Moms and pops aren't going to dial into AOL from a linux box, and they certainly aren't going to "power ebay" by using Konquerer.

    The market saturation of Windows OS's alone should tell you that they will have the largest footprint when it comes to gmail accounts.

    I would rather have a process running in the background that takes up less memory than a browser window. There are always instances when I need to keep my memory management in mind, and a tool like this makes it easier to do that.

    I always felt that out of the box 2000 was the best operating system they put together. Essentially XP is a mix of ME & 2000 (which I guess makes it the grandson of 98 and NT). Its simply an opinion based on my experience with the OS. I'm not saying its the greatest thing every built, I just think it does the job better.

    I don't think that XP was meant to be a linux killer. I think it was meant to be a better OS than ME and 98 (I would say 2000, but I feel its still a superior OS). Longhorn, on the other hand, is being made to completely dominate the desktop market.

    its a wonderful point. Two of the countries with the largest populations (India and China) are the place to go when it comes to outsourcing IT. It wouldn't suprise me if they took up at least 30-40% of the engineering degrees in the world.

    The fact of the matter is IT is becoming a major factor for all types of degrees. We live in a generation that essentially grew up with computers and saw the birth of the internet (and some major advances in networking, computing, applications, etc etc). Sure there are less and less degrees in the field obtained, but more and more people are becoming familar with the way a computer works are earlier and earlier ages. Eventually its going to get to the point where advanced languages (what we consider advanced) will taught at lower and lower grade levels (Java/C#/C++, etc.. is already an elective in some high schools).

    Sure, people can still go out and study further into these disciplines (PhD's are good to have, as they advance whats known). But your average accountant should have the skills to write himself a nifty little batch or a cute little applet to help him achieve his goals at work in a more efficient and timely manner.

    The game isn't broken, so its not really an issue of that. If you have the $100+/mo you get the additional material for no extra charge. If you don't pay the $100+/mo you get a fully functional game without any extra whizz bang.

    I'm not talking about meta tags. I am talking about the search engine actually knowing the difference between site content and site resources (navigation, images, etc.. ).

    If Google said that "You must tag all "buyable things" in this format, or you don't get into our index", we'd see it happen.

    Putting your documents into well marked-up documents like XML and XHTML actually makes it easier for search engines (and other user agents as it says in the FAQ linked on in the /. article.) to get to your content.

    I never said that XHTML is the same as BASIC. I only said that its as easy to learn. Don't read into things so much. Things are sometimes more innocent then they look.

    Who's to say this new XHTML won't be spoiled the same way?
    The wc3 is completely independent of all browser development (except amaya). Their whole purpose is to create a standard language that isn't special to one browser. Netscape and IE did kind of get out of control for a while with their proprietary tags.

    What IE and Netscape did is comparable to a customer telling the 5 star chef what to use as ingredients. Its ass backwards.

    XHTML is still pretty easy to remember (and learn). Its the same tags as HTML, except it requires a stricter syntax.

    XHTML and CSS could be taught to middle school/junior high students. Its no harder to grasp than BASIC was 15-20 years ago.

    It would be nice to be able to throw in some formated alternate text that isn't limited in length. Accessibility standards are a pain in the ass now a days, so the more you can add to an image the better.

    Sony sold dev boxes to the general public about a year ago. The mod chips break the licensing model of the PS2 which makes all of their "legal" offerings illegal.

    Copying a CD is not illegal. Using a pirated serial number is. Don't go down the slippery slope of "steak knifes should be illegal because you can stab people".

    I can use the CD-RW to back up software, but I can't run a pirated program through the CD-RW with out first getting ILLEGAL software for a key-gen. Your argument is invalid. The CD-RW does not nativily (sp) pirate software.

    Mod chips have no other use than to let you play pirated games. If you wanted to play your "home brew" games you can. Just buy a licensed Development box from Sony. Its pretty simple.

    because what you are selling allows you to pirate. You may not advertise that it has this super top secret power, but it still does it, and that is what makes it illegal.

    Without the permission of Sony, you cannot modify the PS2 to break the built in DRM. The whole reason behind Sony using a very legal system to protect its licensing model is for profit. Without that profit they can't do R&D for new systems. When you create something like a mod chip that allows you to get around giving money to Sony you are in fact breaking the law.

    I am not saying that I have never pirated a damn thing in my life. I am saying that you are a fool if you can't see why its illegal.

    Sure. The CD Recorder only copies. HDLoader can also be used to copy games which you have legitimatly purchased. I have no problem defending the art of a good backup. If you happen to use the HDLoader to copy a game that you didn't purchased (pirated per say) then you are breaking the license model.

    Your counter argument is comparable to "cars don't speed, people driving do". Well, the car allows you to speed, it doesn't stop you.. but if you want to, you can put the pedal to the floor, the car doesn't stop you from doing that. The law does.
