I would suspect that this varies depending on the model. My Garmin 60csx has the ability to disable track logging. There have been numerous times where I've wanted it to record the track, but it had turned off track logging... Sounds like a good time to say "YMMV".:^)
I also used OmniGraffle for diagrams. It is a vector diagramming tool so I could export to EPS and import into LyX directly. That way my class notes were typeset using TeX and had vector graphics. LyX even allowed its keyboard combinations to be remapped to whatever you wanted. For non-tablet equation and diagram input, it really doesn't get any better or easier than LyX combined with OmniGraffle.
I strongly second LyX. I used it for years in college to take equation-heavy class notes and to do my homework. Often times my class notes came out better looking than the professor's. LyX was also very light on CPU use. Using LyX I was able to transcribe tables, matrices, integrals, fractions, really anything the professor threw on the board, in near real-time.
Likewise, having them build a Jacob's ladder would be cool. Just don't operate it indoors. It illustrates a number of ideas, such as what voltage is and how high voltage allows for conductivity through the air. You could explain that car spark plugs work on a similar principle (but are timed very precisely to combust fuel in the cylinder -- step 3 of the four-stroke engine animation on Wikipedia is useful for illustrating this concept.
I had the same exact reaction. Now we get to experience two different interfaces, the Mac/Linux and Windows versions. It's so 90s that it makes my head hurt.
Yes, I've spoken about that before. That is the future. Everybody will record everything and upload a live geo-located video stream to the internet. Then people on the internet will be able to "watch the world" through a Google Maps / Google Earth style interface. Riot happening somewhere? Tune in and watch it from the eyes of a thousand spectators. Want to see if an event is worth attending? Tune in to the live stream of everyone there.
I think a more apt car to use in the Chernobyl analogy would be a Ford Pinto.:^)
BTW, I think you have the closest UID to mine I've seen in a long time. Glad to see us wizened old farts are still on here. With our real names no less.
According to WallStats, NASA's funding for 2010 is $18.7 billion. According to The New York Times, the amount of bailout funds committed by the U.S. Government to Bear Stearns and AIG (both of which are fraudulent companies) is $82 billion. That is 4.4 times the amount of funding that NASA is receiving next year. If the manned space program is canceled, let it be known that it was due to debacles such as this.
I know from watching the xscreensaver 'galaxy' that these galaxies will both destroy each other. That is almost always how it happens in the screensaver, so it must be that way in real life.
You know, I've been to some nice fancy grocers that specialize in all organic foods and such, and I've also been to a lot of run down supermarkets in bad neighborhoods. While the ratio of healthy to unhealthy food is certainly different in each case, I've NEVER seen a since store that didn't have healthy items. Pretty much everywhere has a produce section. Pretty much everywhere sells oatmeal, or cereal (health stuff like bran flakes - not Golden Crisps or the other mostly sugar cereals).
Absolutely. The trick is to shop around the perimeter of the grocery store -- that is generally where the healthy stuff is -- breads, produce, deli (good in moderation), etc. The center aisles tend to be mostly junk -- potato chips, snack cakes, soda, etc.
I'm glad I don't have a cell phone.
Your post is one of the most clearly written, informative posts I have read in a long while.

Seconded. LyX combined with OmniGraffle was the best for capturing equations and diagrams in near real-time.

If naivety were the only compromise needed to cure all of the other ills you mentioned, I say let it be made.

Before anyone corrects me, allow me to correct myself. It should be 532.25 attoparsecs per decisecond. I'm shocked that nobody noticed.
Alternatively, 532.25 attoparsecs per picocentury.
That certainly would make me run as quickly as possible in the other direction.

According to the Wikipedia article, the Dymaxion car had 30 MPG and could transport 11 passengers with only three wheels. Suck on that, Detroit.
I'm referring to the surface temps in the northern polar region, that is (which is more suitable for colonization). Source: http://www.universetoday.com/guide-to-space/the-moon/temperature-of-the-moon/
I wonder how practical it would be to tap a thermal gradient for energy on the moon, considering the surface temperature ranges from -153 C to 107 C.

This reminds me of that one scene from True Stories...
