    Forget about the iPod for a moment and remember that the mini-disc recorders would not allow you to make digital copies of anything, including your own recordings. You had to buy the "pro" version. Yes, the ??AA pirates ARE trying to stop original artists that don't go through their gates and pay the toll.

    The MPAA is not stopping anyone from making original movies.

    In addition to what the other responders said, actually they are. They are attempting to ban the tools needed for widespread self publication simply beacuse thay CAN be used to vilate their regulations. P2P and the crippling of the mini-disc and attempting to restrict internet radio are just a few tiny examples.

    Because banning guns makes us more dependant on the police, who then get nice, big, fat budget increases to handle the load. Increased crime means increased prison populations. More prisons. Cheap, captive labor for industry. Very profitable these days. And of course a disarmed public is much easier to subdue. Banning guns makes great economic sense, depending on your point of view.

    What in the world makes you think they're competent? You are getting government press releases, not independant reports from a disinterested party. I can't believe what they say. I can only see what they have done, way back before "frat-brat" Bush was put in front of the camera to play president on the TV. Their credibility report doesn't look so good. And the closer you look, the worst it gets. It is that simple. Government transgressions are growing like a fungus. Or more like a mold. You don't see it, but you see what it leaves behind.

    In theory. Things work a bit differently in practice. Unfortunately, we can't verify that without proper oversight. Which we aren't getting. So I'm going to assume the worst until someone can prove otherwise. That thing you quote there sounds sooo believeable. For now, it's just Bart Simpson saying, "I didn't do it. Nobody saw me do it. You can't prove a thing."

    Not for Exxon. Or Halliburton. Some folks have done remaarkably well. It turns out that most things don't exist for the reasons we think they do. There's always a "rest of the story" which isn't so pretty as the fairy tale being portrayed as American history.

    You're just confused about who the real pirates are. I say the pirates are those who claim something that they can't own as theirs exclusively. They are the thieves.

    I'm afraid that's just how people are going to think (not that I disagree either) as the corruption and greed in government/corporation grows more obvious every day. And it's this exposure that the they are trying to control or stop if possible, while the copyright crime spree continues. They are setting themselves up for a real disaster. This is why groups like IBM are calling for "reform". The ground could collapse from underneath at any moment, and they have a helluva lot invested in the status quo. I'm calling for a "copyriot". Copy and distribute everything you can get your hands on.

    Worth noting is that I've gotten plenty of programming jobs where a credit check was never asked for.


    I'm also one of the lucky ones who's able to maintain a certain amount of principle when applying for a job. For me, there will be no credit chack. There will be no drug testing. These are absolutes. Many aren't so lucky and feel they must take what they can get.
