Just checking because, in your initial post you seemed pretty specific to a particular group as if they're worse than any of the other parasites we suffer under.
Such an orginization provides *power* to the politicians in office to get re-elected.
No, we are the ones providing the power...by constantly re-electing them. Don't fall into that trap. Only we can be held responsible.
We could stop all emissions now and it won't make a difference. We're looking at this completely backwards. The planet outgasses thousands(possibly millions) of times more greenhouse gasses than any puny humans. If you really want to correct this, you need to repair the oceans. We are killing off the main filters with the death of so much plankton and other plant life. These are your main CO2 scrubbers. It is this plant life that converts the bubbling methane and CO2 from the ocean floor into breathable air. If the oceans were in good condition we could spew out our crap unabated, though it would be unwise and unecessary. The funny thing is that none of this would require any real sacrifice, except by those who want to rule over us.
I think the main problem with freenet, I2P, and other similar services is not their privacy concerns (although important), but SPEED.
Look at it this way. It's still faster than the pony express. I believe a solution will be worked out. If not with Freenet, then with something else. Consider this as a stepping stone. A base camp so to speak. You gotta crawl before you can walk. Regardless, full anonymity is of the utmost importance, and needs our complete support. The individual must be able to protect himself from all others, and this is a good step in that direction. To papaphrase: Those who would give up a little speed to protect their liberties deserves...uh...well, liberty...
I can't imagine why nobody is making (fully capable) ~$30 computers.
Licensing. Greed. One of the great benefits of IP law. Nobody is allowed to stamp out 386s or 486s. Just like Windows 3.1 is just as well protected as XP. Of course Linux takes care of that little problem. Apple gives away system 7.5.3 and earlier. But, what do you need to run it? Apple hardware. Anybody allowed to make old Apple hardware? Nope. These are just some of the little things intended to keep computers and knowledge out of reach. Ignorance within the masses really is power for those lucky few. Because without poverty, who will do the work? Who will shine your shoes? Who will clean your house?
...but I don't see where anyone would benefit from the elimination of patents.
Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean the benefits don't exist. Things will always be invented when the need arises. We're not going sit and remain in the stone age because a guy can't make a millions dollars with a patent. Patents have given rise to "junk" inventions looking for a need. That "massive" amount of R&D you talk about is mostly marketing, corruption, featherbedding, etc. All those millions spent by the pharmacueticals have been putting some pretty poor quality stuff lately. And they want to sell treatments, not cures. I'd more likely trust a "brujo" in Chiapas than Squibb. At least I won't suffer side effects like, "dizziness, headaches, vomiting, anal leakage, liver damage, numbness ot tingling of the extremeties, etc. etc. etc." I won't have to take drugs to counteract the effects of the previous drug. This is one of the biggest scams on the planet, and you just want to keep handing it over to them? Got some interest here that you're not mentioning?
Taking away the protections the law currently gives would discourage new ideas because they would no longer be profitable.
Yeah, and unless it's profitable, we should just suffer with what we have...Wow! I guess this is what happens is a society run by snake oil salesmen and bean counters.
Am I entitled to anything whatsoever that can be reduced to a bitstream?
Yes. Nobody has a right to control the bitstream.
Privacy advocates would rightly scream at that idea.
Probably, but they, too have to understand that even governments and corporations will lose their privacy. Information should be treated exactly as that. It should not carry so much power, as we provide to it now, that it can be used as some kind of weapon. It is this nature of it that makes us so "protective" of what is "ours". Only as long as it can be use to subjugate people, will "privacy" or be necessary.
Let's hope we can do the same when Microsoft starts going after Linux over patents. And you can bet they will if Linux puts a sigificant dent in their cash flow.
If the same percentage of the population have seen porn, does it matter if it's online or printed?
The issue of porn is nothing more than a smokescreen to cover up the authorities attempt to control "subversive" material on the net. It's no different than what the Chinese are doing, except they're(the Chinese) not hiding their real intentions. Here, we have to "sell" censorship. It appears to be a pretty easy sell, the way things are going, what with "pre-emptive"(and as far as I'm concerned, illegal, and there should be massive protests over it) subpoenas and all.
So now the gov't can haul you into court over proposed legislation? Quite a precedence being set here. Of course next they'll want to see your phone records to check out the 1-900 sex lines you've been dialing. And that nice new "convenient" RS-DVR? And what web based apps are you using, eh? Why do you people hate your freedom? so much? Or more correctly, why do you hate other peoples' freedoms? Well, all I can say to you Mr. Government is: "Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker, and Tits"!
Since they are not allowed to put corporations in jail fines are the next best thing.
Wouldn't revoking their corporate charter be the next best thing? Or actually the best thing? Fines mean nothing to them. That just raises the price of their product by...what...a dollar? They don't pay the fines. Their customers do.
OMG! Who'd a thunk? I guess I should've said C:\WINDOWS\system32\format.com or better yet D:\tools\oldmsdos\format.com but When I started it was A:\FORMAT.COM
Oh well, that's what I get for growing up without an internet.
You might need a space the size of the Empire State Building. I remember seeing some early(long before they went to market) CD players in Vegas. They occupied a full sized trunk. One of them went up in smoke. Very entertaining.
SEE?? I can predit the future. Waddya wanna know? Tomorrow's trifecta at Del Mar(Where the surf meets the turf)? The winner of the '06 World Series? Just name it. I'll be here all week.
How 'bout the last three decades. The shuttle was a clunker from the day they decided to use its present design. The concept is great. But, to me, it's all about the execution. The shuttle is a result of pure politics and all its encumbrances with just enough tech to bring the astronauts back alive most of the time. For NASA to function properly, it will have to become a serious issue to the voters, and right now they're too distracted by American Idol...or is it The Great Race?
So, we're stuck in quite a pickle where nothing can really be done.
I guess I'll spend election day watching the Godfather trilogy. Then Goodfellas and Casino. It appears to be true, majority rule is a farce.

that he mentions that was shut down by the courts? The article didn't elaborate much.
I hate freeloaders.
So do I! Oh, wait. You did mean ALL freeloaders, right? Or are you talking about a particular kind that's somehow more repulsive than the rest?

If I were a Sony share holder, I would be pissed.
Me, too!

Tequila will do that to ya. Believe me. I know.

is addiction, not porn. Or at least it should be. But porn is much more...how should I say...stimulating?
Why is the assumption that innovation will be followed by excessive litigation?
It seems to be in our nature. (yet another example of a patent land grab)
A more apt description you will never find. It's good that some people see things as they really are. Innovation...Phooey!

And when we have to discuss soap (lower case) and sex, we can always hire consultants.
Paging Mr. Stallman...
It seems like if they're looking for information relevant to their case...
Or they could be just trying to delay...such is their nature. Kinda like pulling a SCO.
