Maybe it's not just about the money, but about control. They want to control what we hear/see and when we hear/see it. (tin foil hat time) I also believe that the *AA's serve as the gov's main propaganda machine, and it serves their interests as much as anybody's to protect these industries. The main reason the Soviet Union fell is because their gov't lost their monopoly on information due to satellite TV. The Americans don't want the same thing to happen to them. Copyrights/patents serve as the weapon of choice to maintain this control.
...and that if a person is willing to accept that harm his competence is in question.
Getting off topic here, but you brought up. Why would the acceptance of death or harm be considered incompetent? Where would that put the people who followed Ghandi's beliefs, sometimes to their death? Or if you believe in Christ, how would you classify him? Is death so evil that we all should be forced to live?
...(hey, were you planning to do anything with that appendix?)
And the analog-perception beings that we are, there will always be a need to convert from the secured digital format to unsecure analog format for "playback"
You didn't hear about the latest DRM tech? Blindfolds and ear plugs.

Wouldn't you call him "John Guinness" or something over there? Joe Sixpack would never leave the "good ol' U.S.A." and he probably doesn't know what the hell a "quid" is.:-)
If the people in the third world are unable to pirate they will turn to open source or at least cheaper alternatives.
You all are probably aware of this, but this is why, in reality, MS, the RIAA, etc. actually "like" pirates. It gives exposure for their products. If not for piracy, MS et al could hardly exist in Asian or African markets due to the price(duh). There is no way they are going make any more than the feeblest(?) of efforts to stop it. And then, it's only for the press. Piracy is just another method of distribution for them. And a very cheap one at that. What they don't like is the competition coming from the "independants". Just like the CIA doesn't like competition from independant drug drug dealers.
There's also this horrible movie with Steve McQueen called "Enemy of the People" which points out just how wrong the majority can be. I for one believe that "democracy" is nothing more than dictatorship by the majority(nothing new in that thought) whose only advantage over the dictatorship of one is its inefficiency. I was pointing out in my other post that we are doing nothing new here. Might makes right will rule the day for some time to come. Sad indeed.
Do you think we can get NASA to follow NSA's example? As far as I know NSA isn't bickering amongst themselves over which license to use. I know...they're using Linux so they have to use the license that comes with it, but it's the thought that counts.
Evidently to the majority it's not a problem or they wouldn't continue to re-elect the perpetrators(or in this case perpetraitors) of these crimes. Any act that involves coercion is a crime.
Too many people are defending the indefensible. To some it's perfectly ok to stomp all over the rights of another, using drugs, terrorism, communisim, whatever, as the smoke screen for a power grab. I know that it's not ok, for any reason. As long as we live like animals where might makes right, there will be no convincing these people.
All that we got here is American made. It's a little bit cheesy, but it's nicely displayed. - FZ
...if all it takes is for MS to assign a couple of lackeys in MS Research to duplicate your product and then preinstall it with the next version of the OS for free?
And here I was thinking that copyrights/patents were supposed to protect us from all that...
I couldn't tell freom the article. Maybe they're using some crippled version of Norton, like scandisk and defrag. A long time MS had a real funky virus scanner that came with 3.1.

I need to use my computer to get stuff done!
:-)
Well then...Get a Mac!
Maybe they'll just let themselves be killed. Microsoft will die for our sins.
I think the other way around would read "Only exploits find Microsoft."
Maybe in Soviet Russia, perhaps?
In other news, Microsoft announce that cause and effect are reversed when it comes to their software.
This is how they can patent so much prior art.
Would you like to participate?
Is that the question?
Too Many Users
Evidently they didn't cluster enough...

Or as you might say "Are you going to eat that?"
Can it be any worse than this?
...but the code should still run without an interpreter/virtual machine/emulator.
I'll be impressed if they can make it run without a computer.

There is no such thing as a "defensive patent"...
You got that right. All patents are offensive...to the non greedy at least. Remeber folks...abolition can work. "You just have to trust me."
You know, why doesn't the US Patent Office simply open up a web submission system?
Uh..because it's been patented?

Don't take any long odds on little George staying out of jail for subversion of the electoral process.
I don't believe he'll get caught. He probably did what Nixon should've done...burn the tapes.

The Patriot Act is already being abused to prosecute all manner of crimes that have nothing to do with its original intent.
Even that is old hat...The same thing has been done with RICO for years.
I think he is saying that if a customer is ordering a super-size offering and a Diet coke...
I drink skim milk with my Hostess cupcakes, so I'd call that a balanced diet.
Most computers come with a cup holder, so why not?
