There is a tv commercial running (I do not remember who for) where a businessman mentions that he "didn't get into this business to get into the technology business" and that the best kind of technology is the type that "works without you thinking about it". This is what people want. For better or worse, they believe their time is spent doing what they already know, and will refuse to learn more about the "technology" involved.
Dungeons of Daggorath probably gave me the most enjoyment of any game ever. A pc port was made (both a linux and a windows version) but the site where it was still hosted until very recently is not up at the moment.
http://mspencer.net/daggorath/dodpcp.html In case it comes back (there were forums there as well).
http://members.tripod.com/~Frodpod/index-2.htmlsti ll seems to be up, though not updated in some time.
A few notes on this:
The reply was not that the player was too low level, but that the world itself was too low level. The technology level in the game changes, and the focus of what you do on an every day basis in game changes with it. While the beginning of ATITD didn't appeal to the first poster here, the middle or end might very well have done so (and the same may be true in the next Telling). There were also some very drastic interface changes that eliminated a lot of the clicking that was such a problem for everyone.
In most cases it truly is hopeless.

That ego is being worked on.
