The difference is that the proponents of Kyoto want to force your country at bayonet-point to commit almost half of its GNP in an ill-thought out pursuit of questionable environmental bogeymen. Crichton is asking you to read what he writes. Which one costs you more in the long run?
In other words, he justifys ripping off Isaac Asimov because some obese lying propagandist once ripped off Ray Bradbury. I wonder how much Cory Doctorow weighs?
It really comes down to who do you trust? Scientists with limited evidence that pollution causes global warming, or companies with deep pockets who really want you to buy their product, yet with all of their wealth have managed to generate NO EVIDENCE that their product will not destroy the environment despite heavy speculation?
You cannot logically prove a negative. The burden of proof is and has always been on the entity who wants you to change a behavior based on a theory.
And as for the motivations of the competing parties, your statement could have just as easily been posed as follows:
"It really comes down to who do you trust? Scientists that have to compete for limited grant money from long-suffering taxpayers because they don't produce an otherwise useful product or service, with a widely discredited Chicken Little theory that pollution causes global warming, yet with all of their cherry-picked anecdotes have managed to generate NO EVIDENCE that their theories are actually correct? Or companies that do produce a useful product or service who are simply trying to make it possible for them to continue to produce more of the said useful products or services?"
I replied to the actual words, not necessarily their ramifications and applicability as applied strictly to Internet strategies. Sometimes a good cigar is merely a cigar.
And jumping to conclusions is the only exercise I seem to get these days. But thank you for your insight.
I agree. Just think - Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech, Pericles' funeral oration to fallen Greek warriors in the Peloponnesian War, and JFK's "We Choose To Go To The Moon" speech - all consigned to the dustbin of history by one arbitrary pronouncement on the part of one self-important pundit. Way to go, dude.
Does that sentence mean that we should disregard all speeches spoken before, say, June 14 2004? What is PC Magazine's cutoff date here?
By cracky, you've allowed me to fulfill a lifelong dream. I have always wanted to use the word "mercaptan" on Slashdot, and now you've made that possible.
I have no issues with religious sects eating what they want (or not as the case may be). However, just to be perverse (and to cover both sides of the argument if you will), I do pull out the following Old Testament passage (stolen from an idea by Diane Duane) once in a while then note the reaction.
Deuteronomy 23:13 And thou shalt have a paddle upon thy weapon; and it shall be, when thou wilt ease thyself abroad, thou shalt dig therewith, and shalt turn back and cover that which cometh from thee...
I've been in a lot of churches of all faiths, but have never seen one yet without an indoor privy.
Nobody in their right mind would ever accuse Hollywood producers of being people. An analysis of their DNA places them more properly within the genus Mustela (Short-Tailed Weasel).
A darkened cabin aboard this vessel.. Two figures lie in bed.
Zoom in on the perspiring figure of Captain Robert April, tossing and turning in a fitful sleep. Having consumed entirely too much Arcturian rarebit at dinner the night before, April suddenly sits bolt upright in bed, screaming "YAAAAHHHHH!!! in sheer terror, the result of a particularly long and horrible nightmare. Wife Sarah, rubbing the sleep from her own eyes, rolls over looking at him with concern and says, "Honey, what's wrong? What's wrong?"
Why not? They're the ones in charge in Chicago, and have been pretty much since recorded history began. If this had happened in New York City, the speed at which posters would have put an (R) next to Mike Bloomberg's title would have made your head spin.
This is about power and the abuse of it, not politics.
And Democrats are the ones abusing the power this time. Methinks thou doth protesteth too much.
This is just another example of what happens when you elect a mayor and city council filled with enlightened Democrats who know better than you do about how to spend your money. Even the voters residing in the graveyards should be annoyed over this.
A NASA mentality I never understood is their putting all of their heavy-lift eggs in the Shuttle basket.
It costs approximately 600 million US dollars to launch a fully-loaded Shuttle. Each Shuttle can haul approximately 28,800 kg into low earth orbit, while a Saturn V stack could lift 118,000 kg into the same LEO. And three out of the four pieces of a Saturn V already exist and are doing nothing but gathering pigeon crap at the Johnson and Kennedy space centers right now. The only remaining section that would need to be fabricated is an S-IU (Instrument Unit).
For the cost of four Shuttle launches (2.4 billion according to my calculator), it seems to me that you could launch one Saturn V with four times the carrying capacity of a Shuttle, and finish off the ISS in one launch. Did somebody lose the Saturn V plans or something?
Nonsense. Rush is "held accountable" for the product he produces. Its called the free market - if he produced crap, people wouldn't listen and he'd be off the air tomorrow.
Same here. I ran CAT5 to every room under my house using an R/C truck with 2 lines of dental floss tied to it (one as a sending line for the cable length, the other as a safety line). I had straight lines of sight to every target location, so I didn't need to mount a camera. It beats crawling under there yourself and disturbing nests of yellowjackets, brown recluse spiders, fire ants, etc. as you go.

Every time you shoehorn Hitler and the Nazis into an irrelevant discussion on Slashdot, God kills a guy called Godwin.
Sorry, but that boat has already sailed.

Anybody who doesn't instantly want to throttle Harlan Ellison upon meeting him is simply not paying attention.
We'll supply the jokes.

We gonna do Stonehenge tomorrow?
"If I've told them once, I've told them a thousand times. Its Slashdot and Puppet Show, not Puppet Show and Slashdot."
And don't forget to bury them face-down, 9-edge first.
I already have access to the Federated sum total of human knowledge. I'm married. Just ask her.
But otherwise, point taken. RTFA.

(Well, not unless Linus Torvalds designed your bathroom that is).

Did you get caught up in this recent "terrorist" attack on WoW? I know somebody who did, and thought it was the funniest thing I've ever seen.
