  1. Re:Happiness versus Contentment on The Science Of Happiness · · Score: 4, Informative

In short, anything that you're sufficiently attached to, that can give you enough happiness, can cause you as much pain when taken away. The solution therefore, is to follow a middle path practising detachment from all wordly desires, so as to walk along the middle path - neither be swayed emotionally toward too much towards happiness, nor being overly susceptible to sadness.

    The four noble truths:
    1. Life means suffering.
    2. The origin of suffering is attachment.
    3. The cessation of suffering is attainable.
    4. The path to the cessation of suffering (aka the eightfold way).

This, I think, makes Be's service significantly better.

There's also a lot of local content (eg ABC) that doesn't count to the cap. Internode have a lot of nice things (including a wide range of Linux and BSD distros) on their mirror site. Further, Internode provision a lot of backhaul capacity, and their own direct links to the US via Southern Cross cable. The two good effects of having the cap: they are able to maintain better backhaul capacity, and this stays freer due to people not downloading as much. 15GB a month is a lot of traffic for me, anyway. Also, I need the speed for running X11 over ssh tunnels from Linux to OS X boxes.

Can't speak of Australia, but in Sweden it's "Grogg", with two g's. It obviously comes from "Grog", but has changed spelling along with meaning, making it a different word.

Here in Australia it's just grog, mate. Anyone know the etymology? I would have thought the British/US English version derived from the "Grogg" and changed meaning, not the other way around. Then presumably in Australia, since rum was pretty much synonomous with alcohol (in fact at one point it was used as currency) it changed back again.

It still doesn't support the OS X way of doing web proxy changes, by reading the network settings. Seriously, if Microsoft can do it, why can't the Mozilla people? Most of the world's population can't digest lactose (milk sugar) after the age of about 4. The ability to digest lactose appears to have evolved along with dairy farming. Those parts of the world which did not practice dairy farming remain lactose intolerant.

There are similar patterns with respect to alcohol metabolism, based on whether populations boiled water or used diluted alcohol in order to kill bacteria. This also occurs for other drugs, such as warfarin (a common anticoagulant drug).
