I agree with much of what you said, and the overall feeling - I prefer common sense instead of corner case laws.
Gays at the prom? Because there is no equal protection under the law for gays, and too many people in american society still view gay relationships as evil. Allowing gays in the right conservative school district will get you just as sued.
"US recently passed ENDA"
Actually, I don't think ENDA (with lgbt inclusion) is settled law yet. I don't think it's actually passed (or even been voted on) in the senate.
ideally, this would be nice. but as a developer, i need to work with toolsets that don't take into account a proper multiuser system. [i agree, in *nix, local root is probably not necessary; but i've only done prof work in windows.] also, since i work for a huge multinational, it takes forever to get IT support to actually get around to installing software for me. so i req'd admin rights and access to the net share with all the disc images. they know what i have --they audit the program files folder or whatever sysadmins do-- and take care of licensing.
also, for certain systems, installing isn't quite as simplistic as "next.. next.. next" (which is basically what i'd get from IT support). you need certain configuration and it needs to fit in with the developed systems. i massage the machines to make them purr (both my box and the dev servers), and thus i can be very hands on and helpful as we deploy up to test and prod envs.
i do not have admin access anywhere except my own machine. but i have elevated perms on the dev boxes. and no direct access to test nor prod.
I didn't actively participate in the previous SDKs, but http://developer.apple.com/ mentions that developers can 'test' their apps directly on the phone. Does that mean that apple has created a way to put an app on the iphone w/o app store? (Anyone else think that is frickin awesome?)
you rush to ebay on thx weekend. you buy little Jimmy his favorite toy at 5x MSRP (because, btw, you're a flipping moron). then, you have to wonder just how much he's going to hate it xmas morning (and sour any chances you might've had at being super-dad), since there is % liklihood that it'll explode when he tries it out. unlikely? perhaps, but x% > 0%, and its nice as a consumer to be aware of these things. afterall, by learning and knowing more about the problem, we open ourselves to the possibility of fixing it.
Because HIV leads to AIDS. AIDS has killed millions of people (idk the figure), this person is (presumed to be) the first to actually be cured of it, and he chooses to deny modern medical science the opportunity of even attempting to help others. the are huge huge tracts of land of human beings dying with this disease, and he does nothing to even try and help. he is a shithead. there aren't enough cursewords for a selfish person like that. if i recognized him on the street, i'd piss in his eye.
1. those companies would be violating the letter or spirit of the GPL to make closed drivers, and therefore aren't worth our interest. using closed source drivers hurts linux, methinks, more than it helps.
2. the closed-source nature means its impossible to fix inherent problems in the driver code itself, unless u work for the driver company. you could only provide work arounds from userspace or patches to the kernel, where the problem isn't necessarily evident and where there isn't necessarily a problem. what if a driver has a systemic issue (idk, maybe a vid card is switching blue and green...). its possible to put code in the kernel to switch those colors, erroneously, to help out that binary driver; but that comes at the expense of every properly written driver. that means putting a kludge in to fix another kludge. perhaps you've taken a liking to this style, since you hack against MS software.;)
3. i think the dangers to the GPL far outweigh this benefit.
if they are running it on unsupported hardware, then they won't get the full rdf experience. "i pirated osx86 and my printer doesn't work. apple sucks." i presume apple would get heat for issues they are explicitly trying to avoid.
please, mods, please stop encouraging these morons. all your base isn't funny. "clever" rewording of the same formula isn't funny. it stopped being funny a long time ago. it could have still been funny ocassionally, but assholes, like this one, ruined it. its dead. it hurts me to read it.
someone should patent using teh same fucking joke everytime a patent story comes up. or maybe patent the mod process that keeps rewarding people like you.
Alcoholics Anonymous does not require a belief in any specific god. I think, in general, they refer to a "higher power", which for monotheists is "god", for polytheists is "all the gods, aside from that louse Baccus", and for us atheists it'd be something like "the collective power of humanity and nature." well, what i'm getting at, is AA doesn't require god of the christian bible. merely a power greater than one's self (as in, "i've clearly demonstrated that alone I can't quit drinking, and i need help from something bigger than myself"). though many AA'rs do seem to tend toward the christian god. some specific AA organizations focus on a particular religion in that step, and it probably would be a violation of c+s to force a drinker to go to a religious AA meeting; but the 12 steps have been generalized so they don't require it.
Microsoft has been classified as an illegal monopoly by the courts (of the U.S., and I believe the E.U.). So far as I know, Apple has not. Illegal monopolies are bad for business, bad for consumers and bad for generally everyone (aside from the higher ups within the monopoly). Apple, being the underdog ("not an illegal monopoly"), therefore is allowed to partake in certain business practices ("free enterprise"), which illegal monopolies and trusts are not. When Microsoft tries to force program X on you, b/c they've already got you to use program Y, they have to be questioned and checked and should oft be derided (imo). Whether to become a monopoly is Apple's goal is not known, but even if they would become one, it wouldn't necessarily be an illegal or anti-competitive one. Microsoft, pretty much with the same executives as present, has abused its monopoly powers, and imo, everything they do should be suspect.
ya know what, buddy, we know. *pod has competition. according to all kinds of people its pretty darn good, and a lot better than pod-of-the-day; die hard podists soemtimes deny that this competition exists, or is on par with pod-of-the-day. nobody cares tho. apple is unstoppable. bow before the might steve. he owns ur sole.

well, methinks that the expanse of the universe is not necessarily an indication of some anti-gravity actually. i think the expanse can, perhaps, sufficiently be explained by gravity (and, presumbly, can accurately be explained by GR). suppose, for a moment, that in the beginning, prior to the bang, all matter of the universe was balled together rather loosely, with some generally huge vacuums betwixt the bits of matter. pieces on the outside would be pulled, very strongly, toward the middle. imagine no normalizing or dampening forces, and forget for a moment the minor forces (nuclear and electromag). perhaps the acceleration gained by gravity on these bits of matter was sufficient to fling it from one side of the pre-bang ball to the other. maybe soem pieces flung across so rapidly, that they managed to break from the ball and move so far away as the gravity of the ball could then not sufficiently pull it back (or, it will, but not in our lifetime). imagine now that it happens to all the pieces, and thus, the universe expands. it even gives explanation to the power of the bang itself.
i've been writing a vacuumous gravity sim that likes to throw my particles across the vastness of space. its pretty cool.
thats an interesting question (on where our loyalties lie). personally, i'm an american before i'm a geek. don't know 'bout t'others. current politics aside, i prefer america over everywhere else; even if they were to take away my computer.

I just wanted to point out many states (as well as Canada) have outlawed discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity entirely and the US recently recently passed ENDA. Civil Rights from Stanford Encyclopedia Employment Non-Discrimination Act

Are you retarded, or just really stupid?
You fool! Now they know!
This is the CEO. Report to my office immediately.
Then get the fuck out, cuz your fired.
The problem isn't the senators. It's the industries that *own* them.
no. the problem is the senators are owned by someone other than the people of their respective states.
Dude, I don't think mowing your mom's lawn is something you want to jump up and take credit for.

from the advertisers' perspective, ad supported server software would be stupid. servers, in theory, aren't looked at very often.
personally, i wouldn't support any kind of ad OS from ms. they are a mega huge monopoly. they don't need additional sources of income.
*sounds of thousands of /. devotees screaming in enjoyment*
followed by their distraught moans, realizing they'll never get any.
