  1. Re:So she did her job... on Bush Supreme Court Nominee Former Microsoft Lawyer · · Score: 1

Yes. If we truly believe that she thwarted justice away from common sense, why should she be rewarded? why should we favor her? at this point, i know very little of her, that she's bush's lawyer and she helped ms not-lose a suit they should have lost. the former is more of a character flaw ;), but the ladder is a misappropriation of justice. we shouldn't reward disgusting lawyers who manage to weasel their clients out on some stupidity. we should reward good, honest people. a justice of the USSC is one of the most powerful and influential positions you can hold. their decisions stand for decades. she in particular has the potential to swing the court, and we need to be ultra-cautious about that.

what assurance do i have that she won't rule in some important case and disregard sense and reason?

Gentoo Linux, Debian Linux, RedHat Linux, My Linux, Your Linux. i call em all 'Linux' distros. my buddy has federa, and i have gentoo; we both have 'Linux'. i'm not at all familiar with the case in aussie-land, but maybe thats the genericness of the name.

look at the end of the blurb.

Google recently announced their interest in the text messaging market by releasing GoogleTalk; this came to no surprise to many that were already hearing rumors month's before GoogleTalk was released. Google is also working on providing free WiFi service to some regions of the San Francisco bay area. Google is without a doubt expanding their operations beyond the search engine market which makes the possibility of GoogleTV realistic.

paraphrased: google's been doing some non-search stuff. so, uhm, maybe they'll do somethign with tv. you heard it hear first, folks!

I'm not entirely sure, but I heard a guy on t.v. say they got them working on computers now.

maybe, in order to understand Internet we have to look at the word itself: Internet. Basically it's made up of two separate words: 'inte' and 'rnet'. What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and so is Internet.

the term 'bug' does not have any association with 'fault'. 'bug' means a problem in code. obviously it was someone's fault. software firm is still responsible for fixing the bug, and the programmer is responsible for actually coding the fix (and hopefully, not introducing more bugs). coders shouldn't have introduced the bug, qa shouldn't have let it pass, and software-co shouldn't have released it. its a lot of people's fault. 'bug' is a common term in computers.

  11. Re:In the same news: Yahoo! Complies with Chinese on Yahoo Helps Jail Chinese Writer · · Score: 1

The story is that a corporation, wittingly or not, took part in a series of events that led to a questionable moral quandary. the reporter suspected that free citizens might be interested in this quandary.

Yahoo as a corporation is within their legal right (probably even legal obligation) to have given the Chinese the information requested. We, free citizens of the world, are within our rights to be disgusted with the evilness that was brought about, in part, due to Yahoo's actions.

I personally don't want to deal with Yahoo anymore; unless they fix their policy more to my liking. But they don't have to. I'm one guy who doesn't even use their services; but I'll consider them less now, than prior. Maybe they'll choose to side with a billion person country over me. Maybe the reporter was so offended by the situation, that they hoped many like-minded people would boycott or avoid yahoo. maybe some of these people are/were customers of yahoo. maybe they'll be right. maybe a billion people will avoid yahoo, until they make concerted, explicit efforts to encourage human rights, rather than passively stomping on human rights and destroying a human life.

maybe the world sucks. maybe yahoo will go on working with China, and most people will ignore the story. maybe people will hear the story and not even care enough, or be bothered, or remember, or whatever. maybe tomorrow everything will be exactly as it is today.

    but, maybe it won't.

In the 60's Space Race, lots of people went into science to be "Rocket Scientists". It was a popular and prized profession. When I went through high school and college in the 70's and 80', plenty of people talked about the great surge in interest in science "just a few years ago" and how it had deminished recently. Younger professors had been educated right in the middle of all that greatness. The 80's were a bit of a let down for all of them.

That's pretty interesting. History teacher told me about that. "Back when I was growing up, Science was a big important class in school... Not like these days. And we used to walk to school, in hail/rain/sleet storms, barefoot, uphill for 20 miles. And we liked it."
Compy Sci had a similar burst. A few years ago ('01) a lot of the incoming freshmen said they had no real interest in programming or computer science, but wanted to make money in the popular job. a lot of them missed the "bubble bursted" memo. i'm in it cuz i liked to write programs.
