If I understand correctly, and as is the case in any other civilized country, everyone is obliged to have health insurance. So you don't have to option to wait with insurance until you're going to need it.
By that reasoning, church towers should also be forbidden. Christianity may still be practiced and even a church may exist, as long as it doesn't have a tower.
You have to admit that a single religion was singled out and now is in the law. Which is ridiculous.
The parliament however has approved two laws: one which forbids the sale of 18+ games to minors, and another one that forbids the sale of "violent" games completely.
How this doesn't mean yet that the laws come into effect just like that. Instead a lengthy process starts to sort out the details. I do not think it will really lead to a complete ban on violent games.
As the government has already pointed out, just to define and judge what a violent game is, a federal level authority would need to be institutionalized. This requires a change in the constitution, which won't happen overnight. Probably it will require a referendum.
The parliament doesn't really want to have both laws come into effect, but the goal is to get the discussion started at the political level (the political process here is slow and complicated, and it may take several years before something really happens).
Most likely outcome: they will recognize the european PEGI rating system and forbid sales of 18+ games to minors; it will take 1 or 2 years before it really comes into effect.
So do I, I live in Switzerland by the way. I think the minarett law is a scandal and Switzerland makes itself rididulous with it.
How can you single out a single religion or even a single symbol of it? I don't think it will stand before the european court of human rights.
What they should have done, to protect the swiss landscape (which doesn't include windmills b.t.w., those are dutch) is to have a law that requires new buildings to blend in with the environment. In fact such regulations are already in place, making this idiotic law superfluous.
It would allow minarets in industrial areas for example, where noone should be disturbed by them.
Stories like this confirm me to never enter the USA. I'll stay in europe and may visit Canada, but entering the USA is just too risky. There is no rule of law anymore but you are delivered to random powers.
It is amazing that US citizens have allowed and continue to allow the abolution of rule of law. Of course this fits in nicely with guantanamo bay.
There is other 3rd party software available (e.g. boinc) that does make use of the GPU. I don't see why adobe couldn't do this now if they really wanted.
Also, don't forget that html5 has just appeared for the first time, flash has a year long history. Give it another year and html5 will look much better.
Since more than half of voters are over 65, there is little chance for that.
The direct democracy is just a farce if you ask me. I have lived here for 10 years and I've never seen anything good come from it. The latest painful affair was the prohibition of minarets, which is just a blamage. I'm glad I don't have Swiss nationality or I'd need to be really ashamed for my people.
On the topic, there's still more weapons around here (from the army) than in almost any other country in europe. And often "accidents" happen with these. People shoot for a hobby for real, but just enjoying oneself with a computer game as an adult should be prohibited? It's ridiculous.
There is some difference however between computer work/play and reading. I find that I can work behind my computer for 8 hours a day without problem. However I am constantly switching between tools (when developing), switch between screen and some paper or documents, have a conversation with fellow developers in between etc. Also I try to glance up from the screen at least once every few minutes so I can relax my eye regularly (for a few seconds is enough).
Reading however often is more focussed and concentrated. You can read a book and be immersed in it for 1 or 2 hours without break. If I do that on a computer screen, then my eyes get really tired and sore, and pretty quickly too.
I have a kindle which I like (still like paper better apart from the fact that taking many books with me is too heavy). The ipad, if the screen quality is very good and when used quite dimmed could be good enough, I don't know yet and won't know until I've seen one and could try it for at least 1 hour. We'll see.
But I do remain that reading on a computer is something else than doing most other types of computer activities.
Is there any software available to do the indexing yourself? Just let it run every day on the groups you're interested in, feed it with the article lists posted since last time, and build the index yourself at home. That should be quite feasable. After a few months, you would have your private nzb index.
Also, keyboard navigation is quite bad in osx. I had to install various add ons to get a usable osx for me. And still, keyboard navigation is not at the level windows has, and linux can have depending on your window manager and its configuration.
As with any GUI, there is a trade off between speed to get started (i.e. ease to learn it) and speed to operate when you are experienced. In think osx is very intuitive, anyone can quickly learn how to use it without manuals. But for those that invest a bit more time into learning their environment (those of use that are behind a computer screen 8 yours a day), I do not think the osx GUI is very good.
As for me, I was conservative when I was young (I convinced my parents to vote on a capitalist-conservative party when I was 11 years old, I was really a fanatic black&white person at the time), and became more and more liberal when I got older. I am now over 40 and leaning towards outright socialism (b.t.w. not because of self interests, I have a family, pay low taxes and earn over $200k per year).
Churchill's suggestion that becoming wise equates to becoming conservative, of course, only reflects his personal opinion on what is wise. I disagree.
Even though this well known saying may sound interesting, I think it is dangerous and might even press people who think they are now old and thus should be wise into the wrong direction.
The damage might be much later than the money spent/wasted now: the next pandemic, people might not take it serious anymore. Many won't let themselves be vaccinated, thinking it is another scam. Until it might actually be too late and a real nasty pandemic is happening.
Weird. I regularly wire about $10k worth from Switzerland to my bank account in Holland. When I bought my house I wired $400k back from Holland to here. No problem. Why should there be a limit? And if so, then why should a check not have such a limit?
Last time I have seen a check (in Holland and Switzerland) is 23 years ago. I received one and had to open a bank account especially to get the cash:).
I do not have an idea why checks would still be needed, I suspect they have been abolished in most european countries already (if they still exist, at least they are never used).
When I buy a car, I transfer the money in advance, I've done that 5 times (although one time I went with $20k worth in cash which was a strange feeling).
When buying large things such as a house, it is custom to go through a notary. A bank guarantee is wired in advance (not yet the real money, but it is "reserved") and after the notary confirmation the actual transfer takes place (it is irreversible after the signature by law).
Same here: I've got an iphone and bought a macbook pro after that, but my next phone will be an android. I also doubt if I'll buy a mac again in the future.
Use C for that, you can link C to many languages for the low level stuff. Most kernels as far as I know are also written in C, not C++).
You can hardly link C++ to other environments, even not mix binaries from different C++ compilers:(. We had to stick with outdated options of the sunpro compiler w.r.t. partial template specialization because we link to 3rd party C++ binaries we do not have source code from.
C is fine (for its purpose), but C++ has so many problems (being responsible for a 1mio lines of C++ business application I can say that) that I don't know where to begin.
In fact a similar situation exists in many european countries: The german ARD and ZDF are are also state channels and by law all groups in society are represented and have influence. The same for dutch (although the details work differently) and swiss state TV.
For example in dutch state TV, political, religious or other groups get a # of hours depending on the number of members they have. There are strict limits regarding programming: a max. amount of advertisement and the nature thereof (not misleading, not hidden advertisement incorporated inside shows etc.), the division of time of entertainment, culture, news and politics etc.
I like this system because it ensures that next to commercial pulp a certain amount of guaranteed quality TV exists that is affordable for everyone (i.e. no need to subscribe to pay TV) and objective information (news, political commentaries of various opinions) is available to everyone, not dominated by big money or lobby groups, next to commercial and pay-TV offerings.
As long as they can keep trying without fearing negative consequences, this will continue.
It should be considered high treason for a politician to smuggle laws through this way, since they are deliberately trying to circumvent the democratic process. A deadly sin in a democracy, that should be punished harshely with long imprisonment.
It is a sign that the state should withdraw from providing protection for copyrights and the like, i.e. abolish it 100%. I do not see any healthy balance, but it just gets more and more absurd.
In fact I know no european bank (at least no dutch nor any swiss bank) that does not use TAN, sms or a secure-id in addition to login/password, and this since the last 15 years at least!
I remember electronic banking end of the 80's for postbank/ING already used TAN.
Since about 2 years many banks have switched to the more conventient SMS to a pre-registered mobile number.
Most swiss banks use a secure-id (a device containing a 6-digit number that changes every 20 seconds or so) or a kind of challenge-response "calculator" that uses a smartcard.
Without both stealing user username/password and something physical (phone SIM, TAN list or smart card) it is impossible to take over your account.
The remaining danger of course is a man-in-the-middle attack.
Are there really still any banks left that rely only on 1 or more username/password cominbations alone? That is completely irresponsible.
The smaller screen size (I think 3.2 inch is maximum) of android phones is what kept me stuck with my iphone until now. I think the iphone screen is just right: still not too big to carry arround, but just big enough for websites. I wouldn't settle for a 1/10th of an inch less, but move away from mac app-store and itunes close-in immediately.
Yes wiki sites are better in most cases; we use sharepoint officially, but most technical groups you wiki's instead. In fact, sharepoint includes a wiki, but it completely unusable.
We use jspwiki. Mediawiki is of course the most widespread wiki in general, but I happen to like jspwiki better.
The point is that a wiki only shines if you put your text directly in the wiki, and do not fill the wiki with document attachments (office documents). The whole point of a wiki is to create linked and searchable pages (to create a web of knowledge that is accessible). Just dumping office documents in a wiki is not really helpful.
If you really need to deal mainly with office documents, then I think a true document management system (of which I would consider sharepoint a very primitive and clumsy implementation) may be better suited. Also if more formalism is required, such as mandatory publishing processes (reviews etc.), a wiki won't do and you need a full blown document management system instead.
Same here. I even bought a mac book pro after my iphone, but I am really starting to hate both having to use itunes and osx (being an old time freebsd user I would have thought I would love osx, but in fact it is clumsy and buggy/instable as hell).
I hope that android will evolve into something good and drop apple in 1 year time.
Would suggest the have a timeout on the lock. i.e. the page has to renew the lock every x seconds as long as you are on the page. If the browser crashes, the lock will be released soon.
