  1. Boring on Cherry Announces Linux keyboard · · Score: 1

I think most Linux users (espeically here) know well enough how to get their Windows keys and hot keys to do just about whatever they want.

"Linux users don't want to have a Windows button. Three years ago we had a request from a customer to produce specially made keyboards which replaced the Windows logo with Tux, but had absolutely no extended functionality," he said.

I guess that's what you're really paying for.

  2. Will this work on a G5? on Interview - Jim White of the Darwine project · · Score: 2, Interesting

It seems like this project is limited by QEMU, which as far as I know, doesn't emulate x86 on a G5. Is such emulation really as hard as Microsoft makes it out to be? And do we have a chance of seeing Darwine run on a G5 anytime soon?

  3. CompUSA on Best Buy Sued By Ohio · · Score: 1

I hope this happens to CompUSA too. They could easily be the target of a similar lawsuit. I worked there a few years ago and was really suprised by some of their practices.

Corporate CompUSA sends out a list of different price adjustments and pricing schemes to its stores each day. For computers, cameras, printers, etc - we regulary stickered some of those items at $100-$200 more than corporate-set retail prices.

This way, anytime a salesman wanted to be a "nice guy," he could say he'll take $100-$200 of the item you're looking at and give you a "free" extended warranty, or something else to try to convince you to buy immediately. So what usually happens is the customer gets suckered into buying something for a little more than its supposed to be sold for, and the warranty as well.

I think that's deceit at its best and I wonder if corporate CompUSA knows that some (maybe all) of its stores do that. It seems like something I can see happening at car dealships but for some reason I don't think Best Buy, CompUSA, etc, should be doing this.

  4. Re:Attitude on Yet More Google Gazing · · Score: 2, Interesting

And for a company that's historically been very secretive, how will that play out in the publicly listed world?

Google may be much different, but I'd say secrecy has worked out pretty well for Apple.

  5. Why? on New Disposable Digital Cameras with LCDs · · Score: 1

Why would anyone want this when you need to bring it to the store for processing? One of the selling points of digital cameras is that you can edit, print, etc your pictures from the comfort of your home. How about software that allows you to dump pictures from the camera once before it formats its internal disk?

  6. Re:Does it have to be water? on Mars Rovers Find More Evidence of Water · · Score: 1

People, even NASA it seems, don't want to consider the idea it is some other type of liquid because we're all locked into the idea that liquid water is an absolutely necessary ingredient for life. We're still only looking for life that exists or existed elsewhere exactly like it does here on Earth. And we're still so far away from finding this kind of life that it would be useless to even consider some other life paradigm.

  7. Re:... and thus the casualties begin ... on UK ISPs to Shut Down Spamvertised Websites · · Score: 1

This is just another reason as to why it's near impossible to regulate technology with policy. The technologists don't understand (or don't care about) policy and the policy makers don't understand (or don't care about) technology. If things are ever going to get better, both sides are going to have to somehow start mixing and working together.

  8. Something similar for AIM? on LOAF - Distributed Social Networking Over Email · · Score: 2, Interesting

This sounds like an interesting idea. I wonder if it'd be possible for someone to come up with something similar for AIM? Even though I don't like only allowing people on my buddy list to IM me, it think I'd rather only get IMs from someone who has some sort of connection to someone else on my list. That way I wouldn't have to keep turning down and blocking SnowJen15, SnowJen16, SnowJen17... SnowJen55, etc.

  9. Re:Next move... on It's Just the 'internet' Now? · · Score: 1

"Internet" and "internet" were both defined around the same time. The "Internet" is a group of TCP/IP connected "internets." To me, that makes the "Internet" more of a brand name than you think. It depends on whether you're talking about THE "Internet" or AN "internet". Actually, I guess it doesn't anymore :P

  10. Re:yay for legalized bribery! on P2P Bits · · Score: 1

Maybe I'm stupid but I can't understand how our government can even consider passing laws that the general public does not want. I bet if you put it to a national vote right now, file sharing would become legal and the RIAA and other such organizations would have to deal with it. Hell, I would love to own a dodge viper but unfortunately I cannot afford one and our society has decided that car theft is immoral and should be illegal so I have to deal with that. Immoral or not, if legalized file sharing is what the majority of our country wants, shouldn't we get it?
