Hell, I sure feel a whole lot less trollish...anyway, so sorry mate, I've been lucky that I've had back-ups almost every drive failure that I've had. A friend didn't on one of his similar 10.3.x updates and got 99% of his data back via Prosoft's Data Rescue X...I think they have a free trial that will let you rescue 10 files or so to see if it'll help get stuff back from the murky abyss...best of luck to you.
I know, the failures have come post-upgrade once the FW HD's are re-connected. I expect them these days. And, no, I've lost no information as I do back up dutifully...just time.
Christ, so my bitchin' about my repeated FW HD losses is all trollish? No shit? I was just trying to be lightheartedly sardonic about what is inevitably going to suck for me as I reformat (again) and copy back my back-ups. Every 10.3 interation that I've installed has hurt my FW HDs in one way or another.
Shame about that wife comment made in the original... Just to echo whats come before...
1 What's the problem with cute when its functional (moreso why don't we demand better design?)
2 One ought sit back and realize that your wife may know what she's talking about.
I, for one, welcome this solution...esp. at the 129$ price tag.
Currently i'm using a rebuilt G3 500 i book with a 200 Gig external FW drive for my jukebox. It shares to my other two macs in the house via airport and directly into my stereo via its lineout. I had to slap a keyspan remote on it so that I can change songs whilst reclining on my couch. I would have loved this solution before I spent the time rebuilding that G3.
Point of the matter is that FM transmitters radically destroy sound quality...they have to to broadcast. There is a huge natural distortion of freq. (below 35 Hz everything turns to loud boomy soup). In addition if you're not broadcasting near the middle of the FM dial, you'll have crap for stereo seperation....mmmmmm mono.
This isn't a little sound loss either, I'm not part of an Audiophile conspiracy--yes I do still listen to vinyl and yes, I have a low power tube amp--but I'm happy for convienance sake to listen to 192kbs+ mp3s and the sound choke from an FM transmitter makes anything other than pop sound like crap.
Not to mention, If you live in any reasonably populated area, finding a clear freq. is next to imposible.
Wish this'd been out a year earlier. Would have obviated my remote needs as well as allowed me to use my G4 as a controller for the sounds...far more couch friendly options than a 15 button remote.
Radio is dead.
Low-end recoding has a long history of yeilding nice pretty fruit (I think the best example out there has to be the Guided By Voices catalogue--god knows i'll never be able to get "gold heart mountaintop queen directory" out of my head. Garage band will not allow you rich, innovative slick production, and it will not give you the insight and experience that a seasoned sound engineer could offer (and man can that make a good sound MUCH better), but it does yield a fairly effecient idea to sound mechanism. If i'm just in the mood to put out sound then garage band might allow me to. I've used Reason for years and adore the results, but it's a different process than being in the studio and it yeilds a much different product. Kicker of Elves
The $$ side of things has to be understood as does the culture of industrial music (no, not fun ole Front 242 either) that exists from LA.
When you appreciate music, or anything for that matter, I would hope that that appreciation manifests in support of those that brought you that experience.
When you buy a CD the only way that you give is with your hard earned $$. Fine. That money, however, doesn't go to those that make those luvly sounds that (ostensibly) prompted you to buy that disc...the cash begins it's long and withering path back to LA executives, ad agencies, and the multi-headed hydras of corperations (those that really told you what you would listen to giving you say 3 new rap, 5 new girl pop, 1 punka, 2 country, 2 boyband choices this week...and you get to feel sooooo special likeing choice #X crap flavor of the month).
A sane system promotes giving thanks, $$, attention to artists as they produce the music live and sell their music locally. Guess what? the sound engineers and recording studios still get $$$ from the bands...the live board techs still get $$$ from the proliferation of new diverse live shows...the record industry people get to have fun new jobs (presumably in the motion picture industy where it actually does take millions to produce their product) and the amount of nation-wide acts plummets while the number of local acts being appreciated in the towns where they live increases.
So hurrah to the theifs of sound! As long as they give back to the bands that actually make the noise. This system (post napster, kazaaaaaaa, etc) actually works in towns like Austin, TX, Madison, WI, NYC, Pittsburgh, PA, Portland, OR etc... where there is a healthy appreciation for live music and LOCAL music.
Remember the music industry has taken away our choices as consumers and restricted production for new acts...they are no friends of sound.
LISTEN LOCAL, DRINK LOCAL, EAT LOCAL and travel often
When will the sassy Music Robin Hood come out on my PS2? Where a kid can liberate music from the evil filtering and profiteering mechanisms of the dark lord's of the Industry, thereby returning joy of listening and experimentation with sound back to the poor townsfolk who have been tortured for years until they, too, believe that linkin park is worth listening to.
Hey who knows, maybe if the music industry lost this fight, we might start paying attention to local music again and...wait for it...support the artists directly that we listen to.
Only pay for what you appreciate.
I think that Oregon Train is single handedly responsible for my addiction to resource management sims.

another 10.3.X update, time to lose the FW HDs again

I can only imagine that the RIAA will have hords of legal folk trying to figure out if they can own both iPods and the first-born of those "jacking."
