The only people that need character based date sorting are programmers using non-date data types. Almost all (good programming) you are using a date data type that sorts anyway.
I'm surprised this was marked informative on a site with so many programmers.
I've started learning Origami during my mini work breaks. Origami is quick to learn, only takes a few minutes to create a single item, I'm exercising my brain, and my kids love them. It also helps that post-it notes are square and office environments are full of them.
For really quick breaks (2-3 minutes), I'll solve a Rubik's Cube just to loosen up by brain a bit.
Yet oddly enough, it is one of the most discussed articles of the day. As well as one of the more interesting in terms of "nerd stuff". Call this article a conversation starter about home vs hosted servers.
On y'all as singular... I noticed when visiting some parts of the south that they say "y'all" to a single person and say "all y'all" to a group of people. I kid you not.
So here we have a discussion of patient safety versus religious belief.
The only thing I haven't seen brought up yet is that this is really about personal liberty instead of religious belief. Attacking religious belief on Slashdot is trivial, but what about attacking personal liberty?
Either way, it seems to me that the employer has a right to fire someone that doesn't want to follow certain reasonable policies.
From my experience as well, you are the exception and not the rule. And it doesn't even matter if your immediate manager is good at this kind of thing (mine is, just like you). If it is the upper management putting the hammer down on our manager, then their hands are tied.
Sorry, but if I've put in a full day and have to choose between getting something out the door before I'm comfortable with all my testing or seeing my kids for an hour, that is a pretty easy choice for any good parent.
Figure out some questions to get an honest feel for what they enjoy besides their job. Do they "live to work" or "work to live"? Figure out which of those options applies to you and determine which you'd like more in a boss.
My current boss is way better of a technical manager than my last, but has no life outside of work. So while I have a much easier time agreeing on technical solutions than I did with my previous manager, my previous manager and I had the same feeling of "get out of work ASAP and enjoy life". While my new boss does everything she can to keep me at work to get as much out of me as possible.
To go along with this, Netflix has made more money from me because they have no (effective) DRM on DVDs. If I'm heading off on a big trip, I'll increase my Netflix subscription for a while so I can rip a couple extra dvds for on the road. If they had effective DRM, they wouldn't have made that extra money from me.
I've been using iTunes for a while now and am probably too used to it. What are some alternatives to managing media files and such to be synced with your devices? Anyone have any recommendations?
Then you will have a great life, but never know the greatest part of life.
Not only do you miss out on the most amazing moments, but you will never get a chance to truly appreciate your parents, nor have the reflection on yourself that bringing up children leads to.
It is wonderful, painful, joyous, tearful, adventurous, humbling, chaotic, heartbreaking, breathtaking, overwhelming, and for all of that, indescribable.
This sure seems to make sense. It would be interesting to find some data on this. Something like "number of automobile companies by year" and such for various industries. I couldn't find anything with a quick search, but someone here has probably run across some data like this.
This is a great point. This study shows an increase in arable land by as much as 67% in some places. Overall though it sites a figure somewhere between a decrease of 1.7% to a total increase of 4.4%.
Insurance companies have actuaries who spend their lives studying and calculating risk, and they work out the rates on insurance policies. And the verdict is that premiums will need to go up.
I would be amazed, if ever in the history of insurance companies, that a study of risk calculated that they could lower their premiums.
This would be why I drove 17 hours to Florida with my family instead of flying twice in the last two year. It has actually been a fun and enjoying trip both times.
These types are arguments are great for discussion, but we need to always keep in mind that it only needs to be safer in aggregate not for every case imaginable.
In this case, the father is trying to be the talking hat.
It is funny, because as a parent of young kids, I think daily about getting my kids to try little bits of everything as much as I possibly can.
"Tonight let's look at the stars"
"Hey, are they playing Lacrosse in that field over there, let's go check it out"
"Your friend is in Girl scouts? Want to give it a shot for a semester?"
"Today we go fishing with Grandpa"
"Help me hold this wood while we build this shelf"
"Hmm, why did that float to the top? Science experiment time!"
"Is that to hard for you to lift with that rope? Time to buy some pulleys and learn something."
"Here, see what you can do with this trumpet."
It takes effort (and money in many cases), but it is absolutely invaluable.
Haha, you really think he said religion is the sole cause of all war?
That's so cute and bad at reading comprehension.
Judging by some of the replies to your comment, it is working as promised...

This quote really loses it's effectiveness up north in the dead of winter. That is, unless you consider that lovely three foot snow drift "wet".

Did you even read my post? If anything, I'll switch to use a MORE powerful toy because of this law.
I'd say anyone who calls a weapon a "toy" is completely unfit to own one.

"Banning guns" could mean that he is favor of amending the constitution.
I think strong words do work with some people. But it is never ok to do it in public. Humiliation is a childish bully's tool.

He was serious...and this threaded joke unfortunately doesn't work well in printed text.

And to back up your point with data. This article has a decent number of comments which means a good portion of us seem interested in it.

Mouse doesn't need to be as accurate as hand on a keyboard?
I estimate about 200 clickable items on my screen right now. Some of them are pretty tiny.
My keyboard keys are nice and fat!
