  1. Re:I concur on Continued Opposition To Laptops in Schools · · Score: 1

In high school I took a Calculus III course that was entirely self-taught using Mathematica software. We met during the regular school day but the teacher was basically a proctor. He was a good teacher and knew his stuff but because of the nature of the course, never lectured. We had class in the computer lab and as most of you can imagine, there was very little learning going on. The lessons only took a few days to complete and we were often given a full week or more. This left plenty of time to find loopholes in the internet filtering used by the school and make our way onto some flash games websites and the like. Most of the class was spent honing my "skills" at Kitten Cannon on AddictingGames.com. When it came time for the written tests, we weren't worried because we knew that the questions would, for the most part, come straight from the computer lessons with some of the numbers changed. Now, in college, I have a laptop but have yet to remove it from my room because I know that if I bring it to class I won't pay attention and won't learn anything. Computers can be useful tools outside the classroom but need to be seen as such and only used in that context.

As for PowerPoint, I have heard from many teachers as well as business professionals that PowerPoint was the worst thing to happen to computers since the conception of Ctrl-Alt-Del. I think many people would agree that a truly innovative PowerPoint can help illustrate a concept but for the most part a PowerPoint presentation is nothing more than a distractor, especially in the way middle school students are taught to use it.

Sorry for the rant but snooty parents piss me off, I come from Naperville, IL where there is an overabundance of this kind of parent who don't realize the value of human interaction.

Norton Ghost works very well although it seems a little overzealous in its monitoring of drive data size changes. Nero Burning Rom also includes a backup program that while it has an information file included on the disc, the file structure and files are all preserved starting with a folder for the root of the drive backed up. It will also automatically spread your files across discs, all the while preserving the file structure. All in all it is a very nice program for backup, and you are getting all the other stuff that comes with it for burning discs.

Not quite, Einstein's Theory of Relativity says that the speed of light is constant no matter what. Say you were driving down the road at 99% the speed of light. Now it's dark out so you turn on your headlights. The photons coming out of the headlights are not in fact going any faster than the speed of light, to you or someone observing your motion, they will still see the light going the same speed, they'll also see some freaky shit with regards to you but thats a whole other thing.

I completely disagree, if you're careful, then you can often get things on eBay for much less than a retail store, the only downfall is the possibility of being outbid, thus the automatic bid system. I bought some RAM on eBay and it cost about half what it would have from anywhere else, and besides the seller taking a while to ship the RIMMs I was very pleased. I then sold a mohterboard and just kept the money in my PayPal account and don't get hit with any extra fees, I assume that when I try to transfer to my bank account these fees will come into effect but if I buy something else, then I can use the money in PayPal to pay for it.

This is very true. I used to actually finish a paper in twenty minutes. It now takes me over two hours to write a well written paper. Even then, my teacher gives me a poor grade. Nevertheless, I don't turn off Instant Messenger or e-mail or music, I simply set myself as away and minimize Outlook Express. In fact, I should be doing English homework at this very moment, but instead I'm here posting on /., who knows maybe if things were actually available online for students they might actually get some work done. Then again, maybe not. Oh well!

Excellent point because I'm only 16 and I am able to answer a good majority of the questions without any sort of trouble. I've been watching Ken since he first appeared on the show and I have to say that his knowledge base is immense. Most contestants know maybe one or two categories really well, but Ken knows almost every category and can usually get at least one in every category. That being said, I think a lot of his knowledge comes from watching previous Jeopardy! shows. He himself has said that he watched as many as three shows a day to prepare. This is an excellent strategy because it is really easy to remember things you see on TV. Commercials anyone?

I work in the theatre at my High School. We have a clearcom system wired into the walls and it's really nice. It's always reliable and the only question of 'will it work?' is if the clearcom box works. We actually gutted the clearcom control system and made it fit our own needs, now the control box does absolutely nothing but is still required. Anyway if mobility is an issue, either make or buy some REALLY long XLR.
