I think the point was that although there maybe technology that will be able to read the media, the media may well have lost its capacity to store the data. CDs fade, and if all you have is a really retro cup matt, then all you have is that, no data. Even though you could build the device to read it if it was new.
Seriously though, how long before most people have broad band? I realise there are studies showing people who only really use email are sticking with dial up, but how long before ISPs start to phase out dial up, especially since phone companies are moving to VoIP?
I have to say what the hell would you need that much space for anyway? most normal users would never need that much space (no jokes about bill gates and 64k please), okay we might one day. Or if you are putting HDTV movies on disk But currently if you need that much space the you have something important and as the previous reply says whats to stop you wrapping the media in a hard 'floppy disk style shell'.
How long is it before everybody stores and shifts their personal data using the net or streams movies/radio off the net? I store nearly all my personal files on my server and never carry media. 99% of the time I can get the files I need through the net. This obsession people have with actually holding data seems a little out dated these days.
You telling me that you would need an external facing IP address for every device? this seems slightly excessive. Surely once homes get properly wired you will have an external facing interface that can control all your devices...
I can just see it now
freezer.foobar.com
cooker.foobar.com
lights.foobar.com
dog.foobar.com
child.foobar.com
the list could be endless. One point of entry and only one thing needed to have defence against f*****g script kiddies!
Oh and i did really enjoy the degree:), I started doing 'physics with space science and tech' but the space science was about 2% of the course, so needless to say I got a little bored!
I just finished my degree in compsci and got a first, but have I had any decent job offers, no i haven't. Maybe its because I don't want to be a programmer. I like programming but in my spare time, and doing it for a job will probably kill my enthusiasm. Oh well, Im now trying to get LPIC1 and hopefully get a job off the back of that.
The only problem with that is like the laws for spam, it means you can sue people in the US, UK and other countries with such laws but not all countries have them. All the while one country doesn't the stuff will still get through and I fail to see how stopping spam coming from the US (see recent law suits) will have any impact on spam, it will just get sent from other countries, as would the DDOS come from a far, making it a political problem.
This is something I have always said. I think a system where by IPs or ISPs (which ever is more relevant) get temporary bans after spam is logged. At the moment some ISP already bock IPs, for example Demon block all residential IPs, which means we have to use our ISPs smarthost.
But if a sliding scale of punishments was implemented, say:
days banned from sending mail = 2^number of offences so far
By offence that would be one bulk of spam, not each spam:) obviously with well defined definitions of what an offence is.
This would mean ISPs would have to take note, if they got banned.
Some would say that this could lead to ISPs playing dirty tricks on each other, but any good ISP will know who is using its servers and could sue the person who spams for loss of earnings incurred by the ISP being unable to send mail to the specific host. This would of course only work if everybody did it.
I'm sure this already exists, kinda, isn't there a service (in the uk atleast) where you can play the song down the phone and it will tell you what it is. Useful when out clubbing and you want the name of that track! I wonder if it works for whistling...
I have downloaded music for years, but all that has done is vastly widen my musical taste. Now I want albums from labels that the monkies in virgin and hmv haven't even heard of! So places like amazon are always going to win with a wider range. All I want now is for them to stop the stupid price fixing restrictions CDwow and i will be happy.
Yes, get a raid controller and 4x250GB disks it might perform a little better as well! hmm and be a little cheaper too.I suppose this is aimed at people who need to move _alot_ of stuff, but who has that much stuff to move?

No just one gig in total, once you have got that one gig you are stuck, so choose very very carefully!

There is a very simple solution to voice amplification, it requires a pringles can... joe
So that means for something to be safe it cant have the MS seal of approval so... um...
;)
Install linux right?
Ahem you cant see the source code of IE but you trust that? okay then
When a 'source' covers the Orgasmatron i think it stops being respecatble ;)
