this is going to set off all sorts of alarms. A lot of Windows users are (finally) getting used to the idea that some software will try and install all manner of nasties, they are going to see this list of additional software that needs installing, and freak out, meaning theyre not going to install it. Pity, as this looks as if it could potentially be a viable alternative to MS Orifice or OpenOffice.

Windows users install runtimes all the time, .net runtime, java runtime, visual basic runtime, new msvc runtimes etc. No, I don#t agree with your hypothesis.

It doesn't, but Google sync wasn't secure. Or at least it wasn't the last time I checked.

It does use a secure server (HTTPS), it also encrypts the content with RSA encryption (some of it optional) that it stores on the server, so even Google can't just directly read it (you could find this out easily just by analyzing the extension).

The main problem was that the updates were done without notifications and didn't use a secure server either.

I consider the spinning synchronization icon to be a notification.

I fail to see how this synchronizes cookies, bookmarks, passwords among multiple computers that I am using at the same time which is what Google sync solves for me.

Compared to what I can get for the same prices as a laptop else where, be it HP, Asus, Acer etc. I do. (My laptop is not entry level by the way)

anyone who thinks iMacs/MacBooks are NOT moderately priced are just cheap.

It's not that I am cheap, it's just that, if I have to invest more money, I will go buy better hardware than what Apple can provide me for that price.

The point I'm making is an incredibly rewarding user experience doesn't have to cost a small fortune.

I guess if we're talking about the cost of getting the Apple experience instead of powerful hardware for the price, then, yes, I agree with you that it isn't that expensive.

    Apple gets it, Dell doesn't.

Hence why I buy from other OEMs, I don't know why most people in the States (observation) seem to believe that Dell is one of the only choices.

Better yet, the middle ground is there, but why does it suck so greatly compared to Apple's middle ground?

Because Dell have great business and this formula gives them the optimal profit. Dell has very loyal followers since there are plenty of people who don't know of anything but Dell.

Sorry, I don't think that Macs are "moderately priced" and considering how the graphics on the Mac Mini, macbook, imac etc. don't have real dedicated RAM (they use shared memory - Mac Pro and Macbookpro don't)... I don't agree with the "well-designed" comment either.

I do recall listening to a podcast on BSDtalk where Jeremy White said the Wine support shouldn't even be considered beta on the BSDs. In theory you could run the Linux version through the Linux ELF binary support - but I haven't tried that myself, but I doubt there should be any issues.
