  1. Re:Boycott on EFF Begins Digital Television Liberation Project · · Score: 1

You have a great idea here, I think that the principle is the problem, though.

I have never owned my own television. I dont' know if I ever will, either. I find most television, with few exceptions, to be IQ drains for the easily entertained and pacified. I will watch one, if a television is present, but won't buy one.

The principle though, is the important issue. Having the FCC dictate what may or may not be recorded by the end user, who will shell out the most money in the end, simply for the right to have the ability to watch something once, when it is broadcast, at the broadcasters discretion. Also at issue is that a governmental organization (FCC) passing regulation benefitting monied interests, not the citizenry. I am under the impression that the government is supposed to work for the people, not the corporation.

Hey, here's a prospective GIS type here. If I could humbly pose a few questions to any other GIS types, I would be most appreciative.

    1. I've only taken one GIS class (intro to ArcView). Can anyone suggest a more vague backgroud to start with. ie programming (C++, Java...),DB, HTML stuff?

    2. Are there any definitive guides or books that can descibe or free GIS (I've been to the site) programmes, or is it better to be familiar with the concepts mentioned above?

    3. How is the job market? I'll be graduating soon, hopefully with an undergrad GIS cert. I'd like to be manipulating raster/vector data, not asking "how may I help you?". On the same note, would you recommend graduate work?

I would appreciate any advice from some seasoned vets out there.

IMHO, the word "monopoly" does not apply in this case. How many companies write the code, market, and distribute MS Windows XP, ME, 2K......? One. How many distributions of Windows are there? One (not counting the different labels). Alternatively, how many companies code, market and distribute Linux? I think it changes day to day, but there is more then one major retailer of Linux (you read slashdot, you know the names). The adherence to one variation of OS does not make a monopoly, because there is enough competetition to provide alternatives. Just going to X major consumer electronics store, I will see Mandy, RH, Suse, even Xandros at Circuit City.

What we do know is that an inappropriate clone of someone else's work isn't likely to be as good as the original. And many, many, of us do not like the original.

And as for cloning, I hope that you are not suggesting that Linux distros are in some fashion a "clone" of windows. Ease of desktop use is a virtue held not only by MS, but every distro, I should think. I do understand the parallels, but I am curious how relevant these analogies are.

I've seen a few (hmmm....) articles/submissions regarding privacy issues vs. RIAA/MPAA vs. file sharing. While I love to see the fervent debate and great minds that post rhetoric to this site, these debates quite often fall into two or more discussion a) the technical ramifications b) the legal ramifications and c) the evil imposed by the aforementioned groups vs. what legal entitlement they have to impose such evil. This can lead to posts getting messy and off track sometimes. Maybe you can't have one without the other. Maybe I'm just some damn college kid (yeah, so...). I guess it's good to see that we have code monkeys, lawers, and philosophists posting to slahsdot.

Well said. I usually don't do any trading, but the little that I do is usually Eropean (I'm in America) electro/ambient/retro lounge stuff I hear on streaming radio channels (God bless streaming radio). This is music I would not hear otherwise due to the total lack of diversity/exposure/willingness given by major record labels to bands with a hint of talent, and the refusal of brick and mortar radio stations to play anything aside from limpbizkinpark. I also tell/make other people listen to the stuff that I "pirate", and I imagine much to the delight of the artist who lacks exposure, but not talent. Similarly, most of the music that I would like to "buy", simply cannot be found here in the states. I can't go to (insert chain record store name) to purchase Boards of Canada CD (kick ass music). I'll get a "Uummmmm, did you check the alternative section?" I only dl stuff that I can't find otherwise, which are not the songs the RIAA are seaching for. Also similarly, I imageine that the RIAA are using cetain alogrithyms/searches/magic looking for popular titles/biggest money losers if they are gotten for free. When I dl a song from the Jame's Band or an old Clapton B side, I don't think that they will be beating my door down. Yet another reason I'm glad that I hate current pop.

I work for Conus CERT, as a reservist, and have also been pushing the Linux envelope. I believe there is a basic reluctance (similar to any business) to switch to a platform which very few current admins (as far as I know) have much experience with. Many I know are still die hard Microcert specialists. Much of the *nix that I've found is used only in the CERTs, dealing with network security/intrusion detection, and the end users are all stuck on/with Win2k. I'm sure that DOD acquisition is an intricate process, made moreso by the level of military spending on computer/IT assets. I mean, where would Sun be without the DOD? I'm still researching as much as possible to provide information to the CERT brass, to get someone to take a look at RedHat or Suse, as they seem to be the only contenders in the high end server market. I've even provided a copy of Knoppix as a system recovery tool. But all in all, this "certification level" will be more helpful, no matter what the criteria consists of, for my efforts. But from a DOD point of view, would admins be happier with a more widespread usage of Linux of some sort? I'm sure that you work with at least some folks like the ones I mentioned earlier.
