  1. Eldred ruling anticipated legislative misbehavior on Senate Passes Music Modernization Act With Unanimous Support (billboard.com) · · Score: 1

The Supreme Court has already ruled that since "limited time" is not defined, as long as there is a limit, Congress can do whatever they want.

If you're referring to Eldred v. Ashcroft (2003), the opinion of the Supreme Court mentioned in passing the possibility of "legislative misbehavior" to circumvent "limited Times". The Court failed to find "legislative misbehavior" for one reason: the United States was harmonizing its copyright term to that of a major trading partner. The opinion implied to me that the Court might not be so kind to a subsequent extension between now and 2024 without a good excuse.

Is the compliment specifically that a game looks and feels like the fourth gen (Genesis and Super NES), not the third (NES and Master System)? Because some 2010s pixel art games, such as Lizard and The Curse of Possum Hollow , can also be purchased on an NES cartridge.

If you hover over a link that leads you to a PDF or AMP page, don't click it.

Hovering shows the URL. The URL does not imply a document's media type (PDF vs. HTML), and it certainly does not imply what subset of HTML is used. Technically, AMP is a subset of HTML5.

Or avoid websites hosting content you don't want.

This becomes difficult when the majority of the results on the first page are on an unwanted domain or in an unwanted format.

Unless you mean "in general", in which case an ad blocker, java script whitelist addon, and due diligence is the best we really have.

All AMP pages contain boilerplate that adds an anti-FOUC delay, which times out after 8 seconds if AMP's JavaScript engine fails to load. A JavaScript whitelist add-on would just cause this delay to run its maximum course more often.

  10. Your comment echoes WSL issue 107. The solution is to enable source debs or source RPMs or whatever in the distribution that you install in WSL, and you will get complete corresponding source code for all packages provided by the distribution.

  11. Why would I want to run Windows, AT ALL, even in a VM, even with a gun to my head, when there's GNU/Linux?

One possibility is that the hardware you have isn't very compatible, such as an ASUS Transformer Book T100TA, and PC makers specializing in GNU/Linux (such as System76) don't offer replacement laptops in your preferred size range. WSL makes Windows into a hardware abstraction layer (HAL) for a GNU system.

Not all video game genres are amenable to the sort of point-and-click play commonly associated with the input device that ships with every smartphone. Pressing one of more than two different virtual buttons at the side of the screen is an exercise in frustration, as if I'm focusing on the real-time action in the middle of the screen, I have no cues with which to align my thumbs over the buttons. I'm aware that physical controllers for phones exist, but let me know when a manufacturer of such controllers publishes sales figures so that developers of mobile games know how many users they can reach.

  16. So where can I buy a copy of FFXV that will run on a PC not running Windows?

Though I concede that this is not practical for all or perhaps even most, you could improve Wine to be able to run it, or hire someone to improve Wine to be able to run it. Valve is offering a customized version of Wine for select games on Steam, though I don't know whether Final Fantasy XV is or will soon be among them.

But this discussion is about very specific use cases. "I am locked in because I want to play games $x, $y, and $z"

If you want to play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate once it is released, you are locked into Nintendo Switch. Is it common for someone to buy a console just to run one game?

  17. Animal Crossing for Nintendo GameCube had the copy protect bit on its 57-block save file, even though it had no online aspects. It was presumably to limit duplication of rare items and circumvention of the Mr. Resetti flow. A file could be moved to another memory card, but not copied.

  18. When you travel, how do you have an Internet connection on devices other than your smartphone in the first place? Do you pay the tethering surcharge that many cellular ISPs in the United States charge?

Epic Games can choose to provide a Fortnite experience against bots or not. If Epic Games refuses, then play a game other than Fortnite. This might even be a non-electronic game in your son's waiting place bag.

  19. How is [console lock-in] different from being locked into windows?

Consider two differences between a PC running Windows and an Xbox One running the Windows 10-derived Xbox One system software:

PC users are not locked into Windows Most PCs can have a second operating system installed, except for those whose hardware has missing or broken drivers for anything but Windows. (One example is the ASUS Transformer Book T100TA.) The phenomenon of Restricted Boot, where an x86-64 PC's owner cannot disable UEFI Secure Boot or reconfigure its keys, was banned in the Windows 8 era and rejected by the market in the Windows 10 era. Windows users are not locked into Microsoft Store Windows users can install other stores (such as GOG, Humble, Steam, or Origin), download stand-alone executable installers, or build applications from source code. Microsoft's attempt to extend the Windows brand to more locked-down devices (those running Windows Phone 7, 8, and 10, Windows RT, and Windows 10 S) largely failed in the market.

In exchange for this lock-in, consoles offer alleged ease of use.

In a sentence containing both a "name/alias/e-mail" and an occupation, adjective, or verb that agrees with said "name/alias/e-mail", which gender form of said occupation, adjective, or verb should be used?

Most the documentation should be about the code, not the contributor.

Most, but not all. Documentation must credit the author of the documentation and in some cases the authors of the code, as copyright in the code and documentation initially vests in said authors, and credit is usually a condition for licensing said copyrights.

Can you point to some docs where gender pronouns are required ?

As I wrote above, pronouns are not the only issue. Occupation words in some languages are gendered. Those languages have no generic word for (say) "programmer", only "programmer identifying as male" and "programmer identifying as female", because the noun agrees with the person's gender. Other languages conjugate verbs for gender. This means they have no generic word for (say) "designed", only "identifies as male and designed" and "identifies as female and designed", because the verb agrees with the person's gender.

Do you need examples of specific documents about the Linux kernel that would use gendered pronouns, gendered occupation words, or gendered verbs if translated out of English?

  21. Gender agreement in writing on Linux Community To Adopt New Code of Conduct (kernel.org) · · Score: 1

Documentation cares about gender. In many languages, many other words in a sentence have to agree in gender with the noun they relate to. The most common of these is pronouns ("he" or "she"), but they also include occupation words, adjectives, and sometimes even verbs and second-person pronouns ("you"). Use a noun of a different gender in Spanish, Polish, or Hebrew, for instance, and you change endings of a lot of the words in the sentence. So in order to say anything substantial in those languages about a person who contributed code to Linux, you have to make the other words agree with the contributor's gender. They require this in part because the word order in those languages is not quite as that of English.

The hard part is when the "unsure" gender gets translated to languages other than English. Though English allows use of the plural pronoun "they" to refer to singular animate indefinite gender, and adjectives don't agree, many languages lack an analogous provision for nonbinary or unspecified gender. In Spanish, all nouns are -o or -a; in French, bare or -e; in Hebrew, bare or -a. What should be used when describing the contributions of a nonbinary contributor?
