The current long copyright period for literature and art seems fine to me, but software is fundamentally different. I really like the idea of a much shorter copyright period for software, 5 years extendable to 10. How many commercial software companies would suffer from having 10 years-old versions of their software put in the public domain? Would Microsoft go under if anybody could use the Windows 3.0 source?

This is basically what id Software has been doing and they sure haven't gone under..

Notice that he said: 'for coming down'. Going to an awesome techno-party (like I Love Techno here in .be) is usually accompanied by swallowing various kinds of pills.. Flash (XTC, MDMA, ...), pep (speed, ...), whatever. Now, when the party is over, you're gonna come down from these pills, and if you don't want to look and feel like you're having a cold turkey, you smoke pot, lots of pot. That's also the most expensive part of the drug-use. Pills don't cost a dime anymore (which says alot about their quality, sadly ("there's something 'bout those little pills ... until they kill a million braincells!" Green Velvet)).

Some of these really should merge and share code more. Or at least, there should be one organization that is dedicated to creating a unified set of the features found in all open source office suite projects. That way, they could create a big set of libraries that do these things... so when the next guy has this reckless desire to make his own office suite... well, you get the idea.

Why? Is it Open Source (Free Software?) against Microsoft, or good software (tm) against bad software (tm)? I'd rather use any one of the open source Office Suites out there than resort to Microsoft software, who may soon decide I need to pay X USD to read my docs...
