The current long copyright period for literature and art seems fine to me, but software is fundamentally different. I really like the idea of a much shorter copyright period for software, 5 years extendable to 10. How many commercial software companies would suffer from having 10 years-old versions of their software put in the public domain? Would Microsoft go under if anybody could use the Windows 3.0 source?
This is basically what id Software has been doing and they sure haven't gone under..
Sure there are license isseus where WINE is concerned. You actually need to have a valid and legal Microsoft license for the software you are running in it (i.e. you must have "purchased" the software) If you don't, you are clearly pirating their software.
Not that I care, mind you..
KDE 2 has this too, in the panel preferences (well, duh, of course it's in the panel settings, but otherwise my comment would have been too short... blah.)
Notice that he said: 'for coming down'. Going to an awesome techno-party (like I Love Techno here in.be) is usually accompanied by swallowing various kinds of pills.. Flash (XTC, MDMA,...), pep (speed,...), whatever. Now, when the party is over, you're gonna come down from these pills, and if you don't want to look and feel like you're having a cold turkey, you smoke pot, lots of pot. That's also the most expensive part of the drug-use. Pills don't cost a dime anymore (which says alot about their quality, sadly ("there's something 'bout those little pills... until they kill a million braincells!" Green Velvet)).
Some of these really should merge and share code more. Or at least, there should be one organization that is dedicated to creating a unified set of the features found in all open source office suite projects. That way, they could create a big set of libraries that do these things... so when the next guy has this reckless desire to make his own office suite... well, you get the idea.
Why? Is it Open Source (Free Software?) against Microsoft, or good software (tm) against bad software (tm)? I'd rather use any one of the open source Office Suites out there than resort to Microsoft software, who may soon decide I need to pay X USD to read my docs...
That is, if you make sure the key doesn't gets snatched (i.e. don't send it electronically, use snail mail or whatever) (Reading leuk_he's post reminded me of this..)
While the court records don't indicate what encryption system Regan favored, it evidently didn't pose an insurmountable obstacle to the FBI. "The encrypted messages, which were decrypted by the US government..snip..
Hmm, if you're really into espionage, and you use computers, but no real crypto, you must be really stupid, yes? Somewhere near as stupid as a sergeant in the USAF, maybe?:)
I mean, use a 2048-bit PGP key, and you'll probably be home free...

You should be arrested if you break in to a computer with malice of forethought and read other people's email. You should not be arrested if you: talk about how to break in, create a tool to break in, distribute a tool capable of breaking in. All of those things are protected by free speech, whether the government currently realizes it or not.
Exactly. Let me give an example of that.. I live in Belgium, and currently, smoking cannabis is illegal here (about to change somewhat, soon, though). However, almost EVERY shop sells long cigarette-leaves and filter-tips, which are quite essential components of any good reefer.:)
I'd go for neural nanonics (Night's Dawn Trilogy, by Peter F. Hamilton) any day!

So it does kindof compel users to upgrade, wouldn't you say?

I don't think MS has the 'no warranty of fitness for a particular purpose' clause. Noone would buy their shit if they did.
Awww man, not previewing sucks...
;)
Anyhow, my previous post continues:
.. are given?
Two words, only two damn words.
Doesn't the GPL state that no warranties whatsoever (not even 'fitness for a particular purpose' (did I get that right?))?
I'm reading the full trilogy for the 4th time now. Without any other books in between. :) It absolutely rules.
The site is slashdotted already... *sigh*
Dude, you need to read Peter F. Hamilton's Night's Dawn Trilogy. It will absolutely blow you away.
Cost of hosting on a site with unfetted access to php, perl, oracle, etc
:)
Hah, I got all that for free at work. Including personal space. Gotta love running the network and the systems.
You're probably just a clueless yankee, so you are forgiven from making such a stupid remark.
Someone with points mod this up. Instead of whining, we need to take action.

It just does. Who the hell wants to talk to their computer anyway? What we need is a direct neural interface. Oh yeah baby..

localgroup Administrators guest
This seems to set the guest user password to "", and then add the guest user to the Administrators group. Can anyone confirm?

He said, consensual sex. Molesting does not really sound like 'consensual' to me.
