Here in Antwerp, Belgium we've had free email, free 10 meg web hosting and free limited Internet access for about 2 years now. Recently the service even offers full free Internet access. All you pay is telephone cost (still quite enough:)
You could just take the Java syntax and rules and what not, and write a compiler for it that produces native binary code. That way you get the best of both worlds ('cause Java is really a little more OO than C++).
But I guess that would be copyright infringement or license violation or whatever..
As you know, id Software did a Linux version of Q3A. After a few months there was an interview with their CEO Todd Hollenshead (I can't for the life of it remember where, though. Perhaps someone from id would like to clarify?), claiming that the sales of the Linux version were very low. Low enough to not make it worth their time (though he said they will keep supporting Linux in the future).
Without companies like Microsoft, AOL, Time-Warner and Cisco, do you really think we would be able to maintain the world dominating position we are presently in?
Is that what it is about? America being in that dominating position? Well, I live in Europe, and guess what, MS sells software here too.
If this is just "a hugely visible embodiment of the American Dream", then by all means, keep it where it came from...
Cable is quite good, at least here in Belgium
Admittedly, during the peak-hours it's slow (it actually stops being broadband:), but at least it's quite stable.

Maybe you're right and it isn't freedom per se. But it is a very good attempt at preserving the freedom of the code (and their creators) that you decided to use in your project.

If the original code was under the GPL, I'd be able to use it in my project, but then I couldn't sell it to anyone! Doesn't sound very free to me.
Sure you could sell it, you'd just have to GPL the whole thing, and distribute source code. What's the bad in that?
I live in Belgium..
Anyhow, I've done some hearin' 'round, and alot of people (including my mother) think it's normal that the police are arresting (or planning to arrest) Napster users..
Under-education is a danger.. Really..
I think this might be debatable. If only the binaries were released, would the problem have been found in the first place? It might have lived happily and undiscovered for months. Not to say anything bad on open source programs. Far from it.

No, it is free as in beer, but not free as in speach. And it certainly isn't 'open'...
