I just can't bring myself to purchase a gaming console. I may have been raised on Atari2600 but the last console I owned was the original Nintendo. If games stop comming to computers maybe its time I stopped playing games, sure would get a lot more done. I'm sure that emmulators for consoles will be available, maybe that's my next step. However I find it hard to believe that a day will come when no one writes games for computers, maybe I won't get the latest cutting edge stuff but that's fine by me.

  8. Why do I care? on Converting Users to Open Source- Why Do You Care? · · Score: 1

I care because M$ refuses to support standards. They also refuse to interact with competetive products. I use Open Office, if I send a Word user a .sxw file they will just reply that they don't know what to do with it and that they can't use it. This makes people use .doc as a standard, not because it is better but because Word is restrictive. Same thing with IE, I refuse to write code that will only work for IE. I also refuse to write code that detects what browser the client has and alters code to suit. My web code is built to W3C standards, if a browser doesn't support it (IE usually won't) then it is up to the browser manufacturer to fix it (which M$ won't). I must add as a result of my stubborness I don't write much UI code, which pleases me just fine.

I know many documentation experts and tech writters that have switched to Open Office, none of them have had any problems. None of them brag "This is so much better than Word!". But they all know it costs way less ($0).

I have had to call M$ tech support 4 time in my life. I always get the same answer: "That's odd, its not supposed to act that way. You can either reinstall the application or I can suggest a fix that might work. However M$ does not assume responsibility if this fix hoses everything and we do not recommend this fix for a production environment." Well, I don't need to pay for someone to tell me I am hosed. I knew that the minute I picked up the phone or I would not have reached for it. Having tech support for your DBMS, EMS, CRT whatever makes sense. You don't need it for a Word Processor, thats what your support staff is for. If they can't fix it (even if they are a bunch of 14 year old students) you are hosed!

All it would take is a new architecture to come along that everyone says: "This is way better/cheaper than a pc". I am sure it is not trivial to port all gazillion lines of spaghetti code to a new platform and not skip a beat, let alone guarantee interoperability. On the other hand, every other major software vendor has already had to port code to something at one time or another. Still not trivial but at least they have experience doing it, and maybe even the forsight to plan it from the start. I'm sure when M$ writes something new they aren't saying: "But if we write it this way it won't be portable!"

Not only that but I do believe that M$ market dominance overseas is slipping.
