At first the animal lover in me was wondering about the ethics of randomly cutting apart cockroaches without any clear scientific benefit outside of learning (at least dissections tend to teach more than one person - disclaimer, I was on a human subject review board for scientific studies at my college). However it looks like they go out of their way to actually keep everything humane. And, its also important to note that the cockroaches are anesthetized, and their legs do in fact grow back. They get a thumbs up!
Jagged metal from inside a server chassis can very easily scratch watches, even watches made to be scratch resistant (I had numerous diving watches get scratched up in the process of work). That's my sole reason, though I have been looking for another wrist watch since I've moved up the engineering food chain.
Really? I actually didn't know that. The last I heard about the army corps of engineers was that they were working on building herf guns (this was years ago) and had had one that they were demonstrating - blowing out computer monitors.
Not to be semantic, but this is not outsourcing. Outsourcing would suggest that they'd hire a photographer overseas to do the job at a lower rate. This is elimination of the job by technological advance (not sure if there is a buzzword synonym or not).
Again, I very much agree (disclaimer, I am engaged to a teacher and see the crap she has to put up with daily - teachers should be given medals, and in some cases, combat pay).
You are correct, I suppose what I should say is that it is a failure from the perspective of the states/DoE not to have a consistent curriculum. However it's not a fault of the students - they can't know what they're not taught.
The exams measure knowledge and understanding of physical, life, Earth and space sciences. Students were asked to identify chemically similar elements on the periodic table, name a function of the human organ system and explain the effects of human land use on wildlife.
In California, eighth-grade students are only taught in physical science, not in Earth or space sciences – another reason why they would struggle more, officials said.
So, basically there isn't a nationally recognized standard for sciences, so the test is really not remotely fair.
So the factories still will exist inside China, where human rights really don't matter. God forbid they spend those "several million dollars" in the US to open a factory and do the production stateside where human rights can be guaranteed.
Sorry about that, I arrived at the 925$ by dividing 200,000 by 216 (the number of months from 0 to 18). According to the USDA, the average is actually 226920 which would put the number at 1050 a month. On the low end, a lower income household can expect to spend 756.66$.
You do know that based on estimates, raising a child costs approximately 926$ a month, correct? So add in the 200$ a month for "college" as suggested above, and you've already busted the bank for that ~1k a month, before food, utilities, or housing.
Not to mention that estimates place the cost to raise a child between 200000 at the low end, and up to $250,000 on the high end, from birth to age 18 (medical, travel, food, housing, utilities, etc), which is another 926$ a month. So you're now aiming at 1126, every month for 18 years. Screw kids, I'll just keep my dog. He's cheap, and if he's acting up I can smack him with rolled up newspaper without some helicopter parent calling the cops.
first commercial post to dock!

Uh oh, someone woke the dragon.
Agreed, if they verify everything is in tact this is an industry-making day. I wish all the best to SpaceX!

Going on a military base.
Dang, I almost hit the buy button until I saw the price. I'd gladly shell out 2-300 for it, but screw that 17000$ price tag, that's just rediculous.

You are correct :) See above post!
Ah, great point! I got my buzzwords mixed up - can you tell I'm not a manager? :)
Great job kid! Keep it up and you could have an awesome job at the army corps of engineers, or at some other defense contractor. Great work.
I wish in that case it isn't like Up. Most heartbreakingly beautiful 7 minutes ever rendered.

I wonder if this has something to do with him being a monkey boy.
I agree with both :)

If its not part of the curriculum, that means it isn't taught in any grade.

No idea, why don't you read the study and see.

According to the USDA, it is the cost of an average family to raise a child born in 2010. Linkypoo Actual study linkypoo
