This virus proves, one more time (for the millionth time) that spammers are an evil, unrepentant bunch of psychopats - they will shirk from nothing in order to shove spam down our throats, and attack anything and anyone that could stop them.
So, in the face of this spammers' blatant endevour, what is the level of interest of/. readers? Less than 180 comments. And very few moderations (which means, few reads). So if even the/. crowd is un-interested, how can we hope to awaken the masses from their slumber and meekness?
Call his phone number and try really hard to sell him some bogus product (say, frozen pig butts, submarine mobile phones, bargain sale of used socks (hey, maybe he's got a foot-retish) etc.).
"You loose a little quality" - understatement of the week. The.wma files are compressed at 96 kbps, and your little procedure will degrade the quality even further.
This being Slashdot, I guess your post was modded up because it mentions Linux. Otherwise, it's an engineering shame.
What drives me completely mad is, the promise of the compact disc was high resiliance against dust and scratches, thanks to special coding mechanisms that utilize rendundant information in the CD blocks.
Well, these bastards now are using this area of the CD to make it un-rippable. And at the same time, they make it much less resiliant. In other words, they are selling CRAP which will have to be thrown away much sooner. The saddest thing is, 99% of the people will just go on and buy more CDs because of this. Yeah, maybe some of them will comment that "I htought CDs lasted longer, in the past", and will be promptly ridiculed by some smartass with "sure, and LPs were even better than that, riiight...".
And once again, the ignorant and meek consumer is lead like sheep to the slaughter.
Intel must be really worried. But they have a very efficient weapon, called FUD. You have certainly heard of it, it has bee used extensively by Microsoft, to undermine already existing products with rumors of an upcoming OS that will blow everybody's hat off. Remember Windows NT 5.0? That was supposed to come out in 1997 (Allchin has announced it many times - shifting the release date a few months in the future, every time).
So, here we have Itanium that isn't doing well on the market, porting to it's 64 bit ISA is hary and which performs legacy code horribly. No, really horribly. And then here we have Athlon 64, which is cheaper than Itanium, requires very little porting to 64 bit code and which performs legacy code fantasticly - in fact, it's so good that you might consider and Athlon 64 just to run your legacy x86 code, 'coz it's so fast. So what does Intel do? Float a flaming horseshit of FUD about Prescott being somewhat 64 bit - but hey, Intel didn't say it, the source was, uh, the Inquirer, for cryin' out loud!
Well, until someone doesn't put the Prescott under an electronic microscope and makes their conclusions based on hard facts, and concludes that, indeed, The Inquirer is right, I say FUD and double FUD from a company that is known to engage in it!
The emissions aren't "near zero," it's just that the extra pollution would be emitted from power generation facilities. Those power generators may be more efficient, but an increase in output (to supply these vehicles) is going to introduce tons (literally) more pollutants into small areas of the planet.
Will this blatant misinformation (injected by the arab lobby) please stop being spread already? Electric energy can be produced in many ways, which are environmnet friendly, or at least, friendlier than burning gasoline. Hydro plants and nuclear plants come to mind, as some of the most frequently used sources of energy - both are much more friendly to the environment than gasoline.
Of course, you have also coal powerplants, unfortunately, but that doesn't mean you MUST have them. In the US and China, there is a disproportionately high amount of coal plants, but even there, large porportion of electrical energy is produced by nuclear plants and hydroplants.
Not to mention that the so-called renewable sources of energy, like eolic generator fields and solar plants are slowly but incessantly taking hold in some european countries (including the UK).
So, yes, electric energy is already now cleaner than petrol, and the trend is to becoming better.
You might not like it (vested interest? just bought a big fuel-guzzler?) but the facts are clear: electric cars are the only real alternative to polluting petrol-burning vehicles. The other alternative is bycicles, but I know they are not popular in US (which is a shame, but that's another topic).
...this is Microsoft we're talking about here, for crying out loud! I thik they are being totally consistent with their notorious scumbagness.

It works! I am not a native English speaker. But I do try to speak and write English decently.
This is the first time I have read something truly original, genuinely new and important, on Slashdot!
This is a breakthrough for a great part of humanity - it almost puts in question why should we even write the way we do. Sure, legal documents and such will stil have to be thorough and correct, but maybe a lot of other human-created docs could be leniant on typos, as long as the word contains all the necessary letters and the first and last letters are in place.
There are a zillion ways to make electricity which are environment-friendly. But of course, how would you know about them? The Arab lobby made sure you are unaware of such things.
It is. And in 50 years from now, when you'll wonder why do we still drive fuel-guzzling, polluting cars (when even now, electric cars can be built), think about the balance of power. I hear of the Israeli lobby every day, but the Arab lobby is somehow, misteriously never mentioned. Yet it has much more resources (oil) and is much more succesful in pressing it's agenda (use oil).
I have never heard of this Project Censored, so I decided to have a look. Well, it looked just as if it was drawn by the Arab lobby. The best of all is this: "US/British forces knowingly use illegal depleted uranium weapons in Gulf War"
I had to smile. Why is it not news, for example, that Egypt uses the same depleted uranium in the same way, the Abrams M1 tank's armor and the armor-piercing darts (Egypt produces these and is a receiver of U.S. financial and arms aid - and if you were wondering, no, Israel does not produce M1s, nor does it receive this technology from the U.S.). Yep, but that's Egypt, not so sexy as U.S., I guess.
So now these psychopats called RIAA are sued because of some legal technicality. Yes, the RIAA did it because that's their style - to be evil. But this lawsuit doesn't touch on the real issues. It's not about them charging obscene amounts of money for the CDs, it's not about their abuse of copyrights, their abuse of artists, their abuse of their very own customers! Heck, it's not even about them crippling the CD standard (introducing faulty information in the error-correction part of the CD, to make them unplayable on computers, making them also less resistant to scratches)!
Sorry, this for me is just one of the many bullshit lawsuits that get the lawyers a hard-on while it contains nothing of fundamental importance for people.
I still can't believe that in this world there are such corporate psychopats, totally destructive for the fabric of society and civilization. 10.000 years of human development from the first cities ---> down the crapper.
What the..?? I have never heard of such callous corporate lack of human decency. Who are these ASCAP, what do they do? I mean, to forbid someone to f******* sing? Heck, I'd DARE them to stop me singing a song! I'd walk up and down in from of their headquarters singing at the top of my lungs, stupid bastards.
I checked out their classical music offering - what I heard was excellent! Good artists, good performances.
Does anyone know if they plan selling physical CDs? I am still of the old school, want to have the physical media with nice cover etc.
Spammers or sysadmins that help spammers - same thing.

Unleash the lawyers on the spammers!??? Isn't it more humane to just kill them and be done with it?
Now everyone will only have to deal with spam in ICQ, AIM, NewsGroups, MSN, Popup software, Spyware software, and Net Sends.
Add to the list: spam in MMORPG! I couldn't believe it when I started receiving spam messages in Utopia.
Err... you do realize that NT5 was renamed "Windows 2000," right?
That was the whole point of my post, Einstein.

Regardless this detail, your parent post was dead on right. What about the pooiiints he makes? Why don't you rahter comment on those?
I didn't forget them. In fact, I don't think I ever heard of them. What kind of music do they make?

Sorry, I'm a bit excited.
I remember albums that were created very well that the flow from song to song
Basically, most Pink Floyd albums; a coherent set of masterfully crafted musical art on an LP/CD.
Nowadays I just listen to classical music. Sure beats the crap out of rap and techno.
Try to tell her that her CD costs less than US$1 to produce. That might have an impact on her.
