I seem to be at the same versions as your 'other device'. Can you really not reproduce on that?
Seems odd...do you use the vkb or the real keyboard (I'm talking about the latter).
yes, that's what I meant..."legally MeeGo" is the same as "*is* MeeGo" - though it isn't in any useful sense apart from marketing/etc, and even then I wonder. It is good to have the 'MeeGo' name out there on people's lips, but I wonder how much confusion it will cause for other MeeGo projects. I guess developers will know/understand easily enough, but end-users might expect other MeeGo projects to have the same look&feel, which is very unlikely...though that could well be the case irrespective of the N9/950 since I'm not sure what is required to be able to call something 'MeeGo'. I should check; it'll be interesting.
MeeGo is just a name and they wouldn't be able to call it that if it wasn't actually legally MeeGo. Sure, it is not the same as you can get on meego.com, but a name is just a name. You could argue that it isn't MeeGo in any meaningful way, but I think there is value in getting MeeGo into the market, even if it isn't the same thing as other not-yet-released devices. Anyway, MeeGo proper has no limitations on UI, so you can expect each manufacturer's phones to work quite differently, and I doubt the s/w will be 100% portable either. If the apps are designed with portability in mind - eg with (at least) the UI done in QML - then it shouldn't be too much trouble to move from one platform to another. YMMV
The N900 bug where it drops the first character typed is what irritates me...and the browser doesn't autocapitalise, making it different to input on the rest of the device.
I don't understand....sure, Nokia can close whatever it chooses to call 'Symbian'...but it was open in the real sense so anyone who cared could have copied the code and forked it then. It seems no body (esp. from the US and/or/.) cared to do that, so why is anyone bothered what Nokia decide to do with their copy of the code?
They might not be paying for their software now, but they sure will later.
The only reason Microsoft software is used there *at all* is because it is free. If they charged the same amount as on the shelves in the US, they just wouldn't sell any. At least this way, they get people hooked - heck, they pretty much are already hooked.
My wife just bought an MSI laptop and it came with Microsoft Vista (a real copy), but it didn't have Microsoft Office and the cost of that is prohibitive. On goes LibreOffice, but it's different, so I can see a pirate copy of Microsoft Office getting on there somehow, if not the whole OS (malware included).
On the other hand, when she has to, she can be forced to make do with Ubuntu and LibreOffice - for example, when her laptop is unavailable and has to use mine.
So, if they are forced to pay the real price for Microsoft Software, I predict a big upsurge in the use of the free (or [much] cheaper) alternatives (irrespective of if they're also 'libre'). Of course, libre often also means free.
Actually, IINM, there is a very old Chinese joke on the same lines...I would expect that was first. I don't have any references though, but I thought the comment was ironic enough to make it worth posting:p

yeah...I try them occasionally, but I really like the swirl to zoom...
1) click reply to this post ... nothing
2) tap to focus in text area
3) tap outside
4) tap to focus
5) press 'L'
6) press 'L'...works
LOL - that's fine if you *don't* want auto-capitalisation, but if you *do* want it, then you have to live with the inconsistency.
No, I don't mean ebay...I'm fairly sure it is any text area.
> Windows Phone 7
I don't think so...something a little later, I guess.

where did you get the impression is was sluggish - having used it in person (for a while), I didn't get that impression at all.

*will* hate Apple?? Where have you been? Apple have been hated for several years already.
Sounds useful. Is it on extras{-devel} or somewhere else I can get it?
so true...but things change quickly in that country....well, in Beijing anyway.
Being wrong is not the same as lieing.
Being wrong on purpose is.
well, der. that is the very definition of 'lieing'
Being wrong is not the same as lieing. Furthermore, I would imagine it is very difficult to prove someone deliberately lied.
define 'most'....afaik yyyymmdd is used in China, for example...that's 1/5 of the population...I hear Japan uses that too, so that's ~1/5...
ah, I see this has already been documented to some degree of accuracy : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Date_format_by_country : DMY is 3200 vs YMD 1500

Feasibility in Finland would be more interesting, I think.
he's Canadian
> Nokia's also dropped the free music on Ovi
no, they didn't
they should insist it is taken down....it should be .com, not .org.
That's not true, IMO, but in any case, it is beside the point.
FYI Elop is Canadian....you can include him "American" (I would), but not "Yank" which is specific to the USA.

If open-ness and hackability are your aims, I would suggest considering a MeeGo tablet since that is as open and as hackable as you can get.
