. but in both cases, it is collapsing for YOU, the observer. Every other observer has to make them collapse for themselves by either observing something the cat/rock, or observing something that has already collapsed those wave-functions for itself.

So a tree falling in the forest only makes a sound for those who hear it. This really seems to fall more into the realm of philosophy than science.

It's really quite simple. Think of video games: the computer only renders the portion of the game that the player can observe (plus some nearby stuff for buffering, etc.). The Matr^H^H^H^HUniverse must act the same way to save on processing power.

Rape is just one form of violent assault. There is no reason it should fuck up a woman's life any more than if someone, say, broke her arm. Both are serious crimes and should be punished, but the society shouldn't stigmatize the victims and encourage them to feel victimized for the whole life in either case.

And if a big burly guy rapes you, it won't fuck up your life any more than if he, say, breaks your arm, right?

I think the point was more along the lines of re-enforcing the -innocent until proven guilty concept- rather than -does the punishment fit the crime.

To play the devil's advocate, I don't think the kid was ever convicted. There are tons of "innocent until proven guilty" felony suspects currently in prison awaiting trial. Or are you angry that he wasn't offered the chance to pay a $20,000 bale?

That being said, I hope the family gets a big fat settlement out of this mess.

The real question here is how a 911 call about shots fired gets to police at 7:15am and the same gunman (apparently) is allowed to come in and shoot up another building on the same campus TWO HOURS LATER with no police presence.

    Explained in the CNN article

"Asked why the campus, which has more than 26,000 students, was not shut down after the first shooting, Flinchum responded that police received information that "it was an isolated event to that building and the decision was made not to cancel classes at that time.""
