Several posters on slashdot and elsewhere have mentioned the similarity between this and the old, obnoxious BSD "advertising clause":
    I'll admit I am ignorant on this subject and I apologize.

    Why is this obnoxious?

    What is the big deal about a few lines of giving credit where credit is due? I'm guessing from your response that it goes beyond that?

    So SCO when backed into a corner and told to "put up or shut up" has a pretty weak case.

    That is no surprise to anyone in the IT community.

    *BUT*

    It is no surprise to SCO__either__. That is why they kept their mouths shut for so long about their evidence ( lack of )

    SCO knew this going into the scheme.

    The interesting surprise to come is to see how the players from SCO are going to get out of being punished.

    They had to see this coming.

    In the bush era of no penalties for Worldcom or Enron execs Daryl may be laughing at all of us a few months from now.

    Linux may be fully vindicated by then, but maybe so will he/his buddies be......and with the money they made off of this nonsense.

    t is available now http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ to those interesting in beta testing. I've heard good things about it already. I was going to try it out but that happened about the same time as the security breach so I wasn't able to download it before I got busy again. Download an image and try it out.     Thanks! The site would not let me access the article directly, so I went to http://articles.linmagau.org and did a search on "Debian Installer". I got an article from 2003.

    I also found that Debian just released a new beta as of January 2004: http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/News/ 2004/5

    An email, which has negligible cost and is easily disposed of by deletion?
    Is this true?

    Emails mean

    1. all of the minining, pollution of manufacturing, resources used, and garbage generated by builing comptuers, networks etc

    2. Electricity, still produced by oil, has all of the environmental costs of obtaining it, using it, and protecting it ( foriegn wars etc )

    I'm not excited about spam, but politics by email seems like it is leveling the playing field a bit.

    Someone who isn't a rich, "preapproved" canidate can stand toe-to-toe in emails.....well, at least come closer to it.

    The Debian people are rewriting their installer right now for the upcoming release. One of the big goals is improved auto-detection of hardware. I'm not sure if they are pulling things from Knoppix, but hopefully so for the x86 platform.
    That is exciting news!

    I have used Red Hat, Suse, Mandrake, & Debian. IMHO ___ONCE___ Debian is properly set up ( that is a BIG "once") it beats the pants off of the others for overall quality.

    If Debian could make their installer as friendly and as effective as other distros those other distros will have to work a lot HARDER to keep sparkling next to Debian.

    Is there any ball park time frame for this next release with this new installer?

    Is the comment in the article that Debian is working towards making the distro more friendly.

    Knoppix has been around for a while now. Aside from being a live CD distro it is also known as an "easy Debian".

    Its GPL

    Why can't the Debian folks just cobble all of the good stuff Karl Knopper did into Debian?

    This is truly horrible... apparently Florida has decided that since it is not possible to do a recount for electronic voting machines, it is not necessary to attempt anything of the sort. Realize that the next election might be hacked, support Rush Holt's Voter Confidence bill,( a href="http://holt.house.gov/display2.cfm?id=6282&t ype=Home">http://holt.house.gov/display2.cfm?id=62 82&type=Home and don't forget to get the Diebold memos from the SCDC.

    I run a PC with linux because I am into the whole free(dom) software thing.

    However I had a coworker who had a MAC OSX lap top. I was impressed. All the goodness of a nix shell, xwindows, plus easy-to-do everything MAC style.

    Given all that a MAC 0SX gives you I can't see why anyone would want to run linux on it.

    It would be like bringing bolagna on whitebread with you to a fancy restaurant you love.

    is openoffice really that slow? i use kword and it seems alright, works fine. but fiddly sometimes, but still. is it an openoffice variant?

    Yes.

    Kword is a totally seperate project.

    Maybe this is a repeat of the situation ( last year? ) when Apple decided to use Konqueror/KHTML instead of Mozilla as a base for its Safari browser.

    Mabye IBM ( & others ) thinks Open Office is to S--L--O--W, big, unweildy etc etc.

    It could be a good thing for OO as it might convince them to clean up their code( get the lead out ).

    I am a gnu/linux desktop user.

    IMHO Linux should have at least 10% of the desktop market before a revoloution is declared.

    BTW

    What percentage of the server market does linux have and is it growing ( as compared to M$)?

    I took it for granted that this number was high, but it was not as high as I thought.

    In the 3 years bush has been president the US has lost 3 million jobs.

    I never heard him mention the "j word" for more then half a sentence in any of his speeches. I have never read about his administration being concerned about the economy beyond it being necessary for bush to reach his goal of a second term.

    He dosen't care.

    # US unemployment right now is 5.6% [itfacts.biz], the lowest it had been in 2 years. # Silicon Valley will ad 17,000 jobs this year [itfacts.biz] and 33,000 next year.
    Its not just about number of jobs, but the quality of jobs.

    Who cares if there are more minimum wage McJobs or low paying low end prosaic jobs in the silicon valley ( running the coffe shop in the IBM headquarters? )?

    Its about fulfilling, and well paying jobs. Jobs that interest you, where you get treated with respect, where you can support yourself, support your family, educate your children, and provide for your retirement.

    I almost feel glutonious writing that, what a sad statement about what America is coming too!

    The people who control the US high tech companies are billionaires or at least millionaires several times over.

    Its not about the cash for them anymore. Its about points, being the top player in the game for the thrill of it, and staying in the game.

    Given that it is about staying in the game, outsourcing jobs to India is irrational because it will ultimately put them out of the

    Indian tech workers are smart, politically aware, and socially aware.

    They will not be content with the American business colonialism of outsourcing.

    They will use outsourced American jobs to build up funds and to learn how to run tech companies( or given our greedy, short sighted, overpaid American CEOs.....how NOT to run a tech company)

    Once they do, they will form their own Indian owned tech companies.

    Unlike the American tech companies paying Indian wages and selling their products at American prices these early Indian owned tech firms will sell their products at Indian prices.

    They will either drive American Tech companies out of business or their competition will severly limit their profits.

    In short, American CEO jobs will be outsourced to India in the end. They will be out of the game

    A time management list I subscribed to warned people about frivilous meetings( power point slides, meeting to be seen and look impressive etc )

    A meeting of 10 people each each earning an average of 50K year costs $100 an hour.

    This applies to email as well. I spend a lot of time typing out answers to questions in email ( everyone likes to have a "receipt for my answer")

    IMHO any cost/efficency conscious business person should teach people to ask themselves the following questions when requesting information:

    1. what do i want to know or what do I want to communicate?

    2. what is the fastest way for me to ask/tell my point and what is the fastest way for those I am communicating with to respond?
