"Buddhism has rules, whereas Hinduism tells you to make your own rules and discover things for yourself."
From what I understand (and study), Buddhism is the same way. Wasn't it the Buddha that said:
"Believe nothing just because a so-called wise person said it. Believe nothing just because a belief is generally held. Believe nothing just because it is said in ancient books. Believe nothing just because it is said to be of divine origin. Believe nothing just because someone else believes it. Believe only what you yourself test and judge to be true."

I would rather have the leaders of my country being pacifists than war mongers. Odds are that sooner or later we will have to join some war (human nature and all). We just choose not to fight in this one because it does not server our international needs.
Note: Whether or not the war is ethical is a debate left up to scholars that are much more informed than me.
> Let's not get into WWII. If you think the US > didn't do dick or spill blood in WWII, then you > have a real problem.
Yes, you are correct, Americans did die in WW2. Lives lost is not a good thing, no matter when and where it happens. That was not the point though. The point was that the U.S. sat on the sidelines for 2 years while the rest of the "free" world was getting their asses kicked.
> Supplied troops to every single UN mission?
Yes. If you are referring to the current war with Iraq. That is not a UN mission. That's why were are not involved.
> How many of anyone in your hometown gave their > lives to depose today's hitler?
None. Because there is no equivalent of "Today's Hitler" in the world. Calling Sadam Hitler must be something that CNN came up with. Don't get me wrong, Sadam is bad but he isn't the equivalent of Hitler.
> After all, we deserve it, don't we? You are > morally superior to us, aren't you?
Nobody said we were morally superior. We have our problems. We make mistakes. We're human. We just don't FORCE our views on everyone else.

Yes, every country in the world rides the back of the US military. You know why? It's because the U.S. is too busy being the bully of the school yard and sticks it's nose in everything. Someone has to go in and clean up your mess.
Do you really want to know why Canada didn't join your war against Iraq? We all agree that Sadam is bad and should have been removed. There is no argument about that. We didn't join in because we do not want to be a TARGET. That's right, a TARGET. Just think about this in a logical fashion. Look at the possible chain of events.
- We join War on Iraq (tm) - Terrorists attack Canada (ie Toronto) - Canada turns to U.S. for support. - Canada changes privacy policies to help fight "terrorism" - Canada becomes part of the U.S.
See, you are correct. We ride on the backs of the U.S. military enough as it is and we don't want to. The more we rely on you, the more indebted we are. That's not good.
The only problem is that our high level of military ^H^H^H^Hhockey training would probably prevent you from getting to far. Ever get bodychecked by Grandma? Come to Canada!
"If we had trully inteligent terrorists, the body count would be much higher!"
Exactly. Terroism is not about how many people you can wipe out. It is about big noises, large press coverage and fear. One wacko intelligent person could potentially be 100 times more dangerous than 100 meatheads.
"I call bullshit because it's going to require people to upgrade their computers. Sorry, but if anyone has a computer over 100MHz, it's unreasonable to ask them to upgrade their system for your OS."
Yeah, you have to upgrade your hardware to use this new fancy OS. Guess what? Microsoft is making people do this and they still have a tonn of users and growing. You wanna run XP, you have to upgrade. And people will upgrade, don't doubt it. They don't realize that their P200 is still half decent and can run Linux pretty well.
This guys dream Linux is in a completely different market than what YOU look for. His market is the Windows/Mac desktop world, not the linux guru/programmer/i-compile-my-own-kernel world.
If you have a PS2 you could use QCast (http://www.broadq.com). Win a PS2 NIC and a local network you can stream music (mp3, OOG) + videos (mpeg2, DivX) and pictures.
It's a good little company that is constantly fixing bugs and adding new codecs to their lineup. Pretty rare for a company these days.
I would never by a Sony phone again. It was a good phone but when the battery died it was 50 bucks to get it replaced. That is close to how much I payed for the phone! I'll stick with Siemens phones that use normal AA batteries.
I would have to agree. A buddy of mine lent me his copy of Homeworld but I lost it so I bought a new copy of it yesterday. It was a very good investment.
500 miles? Are you in the U.S. now? We all know that you can tell who is a Canadian because we do not use Miles or Kms, we use the amount of time it takes to drive from one place to the other.

You need to take a look at Litestep. Shellfront is the best site I've found on desktop replacements for Windows. http://www.shellfront.org
I'm forced to use Windows at work but using Litestep has been a blessing. Virtual windows, *real* hotkeys, themes, etc. It's a bit of a pain to configure but once you get it going it rocks.
Read my post above. There is no 1x recording anymore... it's USB... so what do they say the speed of USB is 24x... I don't know. It's blazing fast copying the files over to the mini-disc. The slow part is converting my mp3's to ATRAC format.
Also, to note: I believe that the ATRAC format is better than mp3. The files are smaller and of the same quality.
But I agree with you. If I could copy mp3 -> minidisc, I would be in heaven.
You can. The technology you are looking for is called Net-MD. I just bought a minidisc player a couple of months ago and this is how I download the songs to my player..ie through my USB port -> player.
The Sony OpenMG software is a bit of a pain in the ass and only runs on Windows but it's worth it if you ask me. One thing to note: OpenMG used to crash for me all the time until I install SP3 on W2K. I think the crash had to do with some stupid active-X control. Grrr.
On what basis do you assume that ketosis magically prevents all dietary fat from being stored ? Ketones are a by-product of a metabolic process, it's not some sort of infinitely large tapeworm.
You are correct. It isn't ketosis that is the magical tapeworm. Ketosis and the production of ketones is just an indicator of your body using fat for energy. The big thing that makes people lose weight on the Atkins diet is insulin.
Insulin is a double-edged sword. It is one of the hormones that is required to build muscle (hence why some bodybuilders inject it) but it also has the side effect of telling the body to store fat.
For the "average" North American that doesn't exercise or put major strain on their muscles insulin causes them to store fat. It basically goes something like this.
- Eat sugary food - Insulin goes up - No energy is required to repair muscles - Store energy as fat - Rinse and Repeat
Now, because the the body is an efficient machine our bodies have an easier time handling carbs that are digested. Thus our insulin response gets stronger because the body is used to converting carbs->sugar->fat. So when you eat carbs, TOO much insulin is released, sugar gets converted into fat quickly and your blood sugar levels drop. Ever notice that after a high-carb lunch you want to have a nap afterwards? That's because your blood sugar levels dropped and you have no energy in the system.
Also it should be noted that low-carb diets are better at preserving lean muscle mass than other diets because of the increased protien intake. Your body will break down fat for energy and break down protein to provide the essential amino acids your body required to function. If you have a lower protein intake your body will break down muscle mass to get the amino acids it needs.
So, if I am getting you correctly, could you take a bigger/higher-res LCD, (ie from a laptop) and build a high quality projector from that. Using a bigger lense mind you.
I have my own similar ritual in the morning.
I do cardio for an hour when I wake up followed by an hour of meditation. It is quite a way to start off the day.

You can put QNX on your iPAQ and love it more.

One big difference though. The effects aren't permanent, they can just roll back the server.
It's the equivalent of someone doing the search and replace on your novel, you freaking out and them saying, "here is the backup copy I made"
I've been in games though where someone does steal your hard earned equipment. It sucks big time. This is a little bit different though.
Man, I wish I had mod points. You make a good point.

It kept me up rather late last night.
No? What about when I buy a computer at the store? I don't want Windows installed on it but I have no choice?
I still pay for it whether or not I want it...
Exactly. You are correct. But at that point Apple would be a monopoly. In their current state they are not even close.
The whole deal is about a monopoly throwing in "features" to drown out the competition.
Yeah, in The Pas, born and raised. I'm sure glad I'm out of that place. I'm in Ontario now. It's a little more "civilized" ;)
7-8 hours? That wouldn't be Thompson would it?
Ha!
;)

Post to Ask Slashdot and when they are slacking off they will read it and realize you are talking about them....
Yeah, it's called VNC. They should try it sometime.

I feel the same way and I'm in Canada. Somehow the world doesn't seem like such a wonderful place anymore.
