You can't really include everyone, though. It's such a small market for these types of adaptations, admittedly, that spending extra time on them can end up detracting from the overall gaming experience if done wrong, and I'm sure most game companies don't want to risk something such as this for a vast minority of the market.

I'm not saying that there isn't a good reason for doing this, it's just that most games don't really lend themselves to being adapted for everyone.

"You can please some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time." ...I forget who said it offhand, but this is really the applicable quote here.

Many, perhaps most, things on PC should be reasonably playable with the Microsoft Strategic Commander, as it has three analogue axes and a myriad of buttons. Flight sticks offer much the same.

However, to people like me, who don't want to spend 20 minutes configuring 20 buttons to the optimum settings... those controllers are just plain scary.

I actually have a picture of the SNES one sitting back in one of my old issues of Nintendo Power... it never got released here, but it was basically the same thing. There were little switches that I think you could use to turn buttons on and off, and everything appeared to be as jammed in as possible. It wasn't all that great-looking of a controller.

I don't think that XBox has anything to sell itself with. Halo will only be popular as long as it remains as innovative as the first game. XBox Live seems to be the only rocksteady portion of the package.

I read somewhere that when 3D0 was in their bankrupt state with their console, their numbers were better than X-Box's current situation.

3D0 didn't have nearly as much money as either Microsoft or Nintendo. Nintendo has the GBA to fall back on, which is a point that all of these "Nintendo is dead" articles seem to miss. Nintendo also has decades of profit stored away, meaning that they can take a fall and not have to worry about completely collapsing like 3D0. Sega collapsed because they spread themselves too thin. Nintendo is avoiding this situation, and managing to stay steadily afloat in the process.

Nothing Nintendo does now will ever get them close to the PS2's numbers, so it's not worth playing all their tricks now.

I would have to agree. I think Nintendo has realized the mistakes that it has made, but rather than try to instantly correct them, they seem to be waiting for their next console to fix the errors they made. It will amount to slow going for the GameCube, but it will let them surprise the entire industry if they pull some tricks out of their hat that no one expected them to do, based on GCN's performance.

If they made a SNES anthology for Nintendo's next system (hey, could happen), would they hire, say, the ZSNES developers to help code the emulator for it? Actually, the new interface for Winamp 3's default Modern skin is a lot easier to use than the "Classic" skin. The buttons are bigger, the text is easier to read, and everything is overall easier to use and find around the window. It takes up a bit more screen space, sure, but eventually you get tired of 2.x having everything compacted as much as it possibly could.
