THere's a difference, though. Contrary to many fanboys' beliefs, Nintendo has no software division to fall back on. 5 wonderful games a year does not a software division make. Sega has a much larger one and as such was able to make the move it did. Nintendo is not.

I'm not saying it won't leave the business. I'm just saying it won't make the same move as Sega.

This is the main drawback. With a PC, it's easy to just pull out a card and replace it. With this "console", it seems to be that you'd either have to replace the console or just live with not being able to play the game. It leaves you in a bad situation. This is a REPLACEMENT for a PC, not a secondary PC.

It mentions that it will be able to install 2-disc games... but it doesn't mention how long it will take to do so, and whether it will let you choose which installation you can make. Some games allow you to choose how much of the game you want to install, to limit HD space used. I'd be interested to know how this works.

Many gaming companies use their figures in terms of how many they have shipped. If they've shipped all of their games/consoles/whatever, they've "sold out". The sell-through rate is a less-used figure in gaming.

Actually, there was one point where Sega was trying to pump as many DCs into the market as possible to try to get the install base high before PS2 came out. This was working rather well in Japan, but they ran into a chip shortage, and were only able to manufacture about 2/3 of the systems that they wanted to and had to redirect consoles from the US and European markets to meet demand.

The US market didn't care all that much, since DC wasn't doing too well anyway, but the European market was kind of miffed.

Actually, the most recent Pokemon game does need a bit more in translation than the previous 2 N64 ones. This being because unlike the Pokemon Stadium games, where it was just a place for you to fight with your Pokemon in 3D, this one also contains its own entirely original RPG in 3D, with dialogue and everything, and that requires a lot of translation.

What I was getting at is that there's a difference between saying that the companies are going to get billions of dollars in revenue in the next 4 years, and that those same companies are going to get billions of dollars in profit in the next 4 years.

  19. Wait a minute... on MMO Report Tips World Of Warcraft As Leader · · Score: 1

Isn't there a difference between revenue and profit? Just because a bunch of companies are getting a bunch of money from their subscribers doesn't mean they're profiting more. Because the more people that play MMORPGs, the more servers they need to handle the load, the more tech support they need to help people with issues, the more full-time coders they need to help fix the bugs that come up, and the more designers, coders, artists, etc. they need to create new content for the game to keep people coming back. The bigger a game gets, the more they need to spend on it, so just because they have more revenue doesn't mean they have more profit.
