  1. harsh, but... on Space is Silent but Space Habitats are too Noisy · · Score: 1

I bet there are people out there fit and willing to be astronaughts who can deal with the noise. The best thing is to find these people... they can stay in space for now. Surely, whatever the people would cost is far less than changing the envinronment...

  2. Yeah, this topic really took off on Russians, NASA Meet to Discuss Manned Mars Mission · · Score: 1

    woop-dee-doo

what's with all the slash topics here prompting virtually no reponse!?

  3. MUSIC will make or break the movie on Dungeons & Dragons Movie · · Score: 1

I'm very new to d&d, I play it with my friends.

Most of all I love music...

this movie sounds like it could really be awesome.. but one aspect I haven't read anything about is the music. The music is an element just as important as effects, as visuals, as plot...

there are plenty of fine composers and musicians out there, hopefully some can be found with a natural passion for D&D!

    what do you think?

  4. Re:wow.. already! on Scientists Poised to Create Life · · Score: 1

Watch as you go to write your code and wait patiently for it to assemble and a crowd of people huddle around the monitor

    and out pops... Clippy!

  5. Economic rights are the important ones. on Australian Government Cracks Down on Net Users · · Score: 1

Haven't we all learned that economic rights are far more important than civil ones?

The revolutionary war was not won over civil rights; it was lost to the British who pulled out in light of Adam Smith and Wealth of Nations.

We should be fighting for the rights of capitalism which have been drowning since the days of the progressives...

  6. Happy Thanksgiving to you! on New Intel uP for Ultra-Cheap PCs · · Score: 1

glad to see some holiday spirit on /.

    :-)

  7. Monopoly == Good on Microsoft To Go Straight to the Supreme Court? · · Score: 1

I thought monopoly was a good thing. I thought the purpose of government is to nurture the capitalist. Isn't this a free market economy?

Isn't this how England and eventually America became the powers of freedom that they are?

The antitrust laws are from the 1800's and from the progressives who destroyed our free market system.. is that what you all REALLY want?

  8. Re:Genius? on David Bowie talks about Technology and Music · · Score: 1

I agree very much. It's like when someone asks, "are you sure?" Each time a person asks that, your answer is only half as meaningfull as it was the previous time...

    ever think about that?

  9. FUD or not, people with power... on Vote in a CNN Poll on the DOJ MS Ruling · · Score: 1

who make decisions, such as "the masses" will make decisions based on what they believe, whether they have read into the situation or not!

  10. 4 of the same poll? on Uncle Robin's Advice for Lovelorn Geeks · · Score: 1

Why are there 4 of the same "Women..." polls..

Did everyone just randomly choose one, and it happened to become a popular one?

    Am I seeing quadroople?

  11. fake can never be real enough on Simulating Human Musical Performance · · Score: 3

It will always take real musicians to do something truely great.

    Just as well as your computer can generate a believable landscape, with natural subtleties, a computer can generate a sound;

Perhaps some day it may progress to the point of resolution where it is very nearly indistinguishable from real musicians.

But, there is always something to be said for those who take art to a new and exciting level.

I am a musician, and I want to hear my computer making music just as much as all you programmers want computers to write your code for you, and be better than you at it. :-)

    -stuff to think about

  12. leading to extream computer dependency? on The Ups and Downs of Wearable Computing · · Score: 2

If a wearable computer device becomes the norm in the future, isn't it possible that people will come to rely on them for everything?

Sure, we all "rely" on our computers, but what happens when the computer starts to become- our long and short term memory? Our friends? Our signals when to eat, drink, all because we have come to depend on them for everything!?

    Is this possible?

  13. Color was changed from Colour by Webster ...>??? on iMac II to have LCD/Firewire/DVD/AirPort/new color · · Score: 1

In his masterfullness, Webster changed the spelling of some words, just because he could. Colour became Color, etc.

can anyone verify this? It's what I've heard.

  14. don't use dns... use the base 256 number system! on Welcome to the New Server · · Score: 1

This wouldn't exactly solve the problem, since the ip changed.

But anyway, in case you didn't know, you can use http://255 = http://0.0.0.255, http://256 = http://0.0.1.0, etc. You get the idea. Use it, it's cool!

  15. Re:Some thoughts on New House of Reps Site on Science, Math, & Tech Education · · Score: 1

    LOL, ... nicely said.

  16. fractal, anyone? on Gaussian Distribution being questioned · · Score: 1

Isn't this whole thing just a fractal?

  17. G4 Sound System?? on Apple announces the G4 · · Score: 1

Hmm.. dvd and a special display...

but no mention of any cool sound systems?

I'm a musician/composer and I know the macs kindof have a niche in the realtime sound proccessing area... yet, this is always in the concert hall.

I'm surprised, for all that money, you don't get an amazing dolby digital set of 6 speaks!

anyone have anything else to say re: sound/macs/G4s..?

  18. Re:Sounds halfway like the ZDNN article the other on The Life of Linus · · Score: 1

    What's LCD? What's PHB?

Paint me green and call me newbie.

  19. more of them.. on Babelfish Mutations · · Score: 2

French: A backed up penny is a gained penny.

German: A penny, which becomes secured, is an acquired penny.

Portuguese: A currency of a conserved cent is a currency of a cent earns.

Or, you can feed the newly translated english sentence again through the next language, for more strange stuff.

English: A penny saved is a penny earned.

French: A backed up penny is a gained penny.

German: Support penny is a won penny.

Italian: The penny of support is a gained penny.

Portuguese: The currency of a cent of the sustentation is a currency of a cent earns.

Spanish: The modernity of a cent of the sustenation is a modernity of a cent wins.

  20. IPChains on Battle.Net Games Through Linux Firewalls? · · Score: 1

so how do I do this using IPchains?

  21. Social Welfare on Carl Sagan Was a Secret Pot Smoker · · Score: 1

Since some certain people *ehhem* in the past decided that there was a minimum level of existance, and that the government and society should take it upon themselves to keep people above this level of poverty, the common man pays lots of tax money for medical situations arising from drugs and alcohol. Thus, when such things are legalized, it becomes *everyone's* problem.

  22. CDex [windows] on Ask Slashdot: What's the Best MP3 Encoder? · · Score: 1
    Here's CDex

What do you all think of it?

  23. Re:out of focus/eyestrain on Quickie Sunday · · Score: 1

I also found the backgrounds to be paticularly blurry especially when the camera was moving. Do they think they can lay off the rendering a bit just 'cause the camera is moving around?

Also, does anyone ever notice sound not quite being exactly with mouth movements? Is this some sort of effect of hearing more "background" than "forground" sound if you sit way back in a movie theater?

    anyway.. :-)

  24. altering the ol' beige box to make it cool on How to Build a Clear Computer Case · · Score: 1

I like my case; it's heavy, big, and beige.. who has ideas on what I can do to make it cool? I could, paint it, ... what else?

  25. BWP ~ Linux :: Hollywood films ~ Windows on Lo-Tech Cinema · · Score: 1

Remember that bloatmobile analogy? Well here's another... there can be good stuff without the bloat!

On the other hand, who didn't enjoy Star Wars?
