Well from what I have read about the life expectancy of electronics in general, has a lot to do with how much you turn the unit on/off, the environment, humidity, temp, air circ. etc.
The expansion and contraction of solder joints due to temp flux causes micro cracks that expand over time and eventually cause the malfunction.
So that really is a hard question to answer.

Good definition of MTBF: http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/perf/qual/sp ec_MTBF.htm And the turn on/off debate: http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/perf/qual/ spec_MTBF.htm
I like Tom's look at PSUs: http://www.tomshardware.com/howto/20030609/
Here is the kicker though: "An overwhelmed power supply may not be able to keep adequate current flowing to your PC's components, and that can mean error messages, strange behavior, or even system shutdowns. But instead of those obvious signs of trouble, an overworked power supply may just pump extra heat into your PC, speeding up the system's aging process and pushing your PC's components to an early demise. If you suspect your power supply may be about to give up the ghost, replace it. PC Power and Cooling is a good source for quality power supplies." Source: http://www.pcworld.com/resour ce/zoom.asp
Regardless, things will vary depending on your specifics. Call the manufacturer to verify specs and do some line testing with a handy dandy multi-meter.
It's not my quote...if more Americans have cable than telephone...time to get telephones on those cables don't you think?
Mabye in Mink they have to rely on Cband. I can't believe some neighbor wasn't smart enough to buy some coax and split a line with they guy down the lane. Don't underestimate those pig farms now, ya hear!
Some smart guy is going to go setup a Dlink 624 next to the cable Internet and make some good coin off 15 people per month. Especially if they use VOIP services.
Hell, I'm phoneing those people right now!...Oh wait...no phone.
"Yes, the telephone is not everywhere. In fact, televisions are more common in American homes today."
So guess what? Cable is about to explode with services. Check out vonage.com Get yourself connected. $10 for equipment $15 per month unlimted North America calling.
Say goodbye to the phrase, "Long Distance".
Then say hello to, "TiVo, Replay and MythTv" while your at it.
Conversely, I'm just as unhappy about MS apps being ported to Linux.
We really need a purely alternative solution to MS.
I have users that just can *not* run an MS box thanks to the crippling effects of Malware, Spyware, Adware. Solution, if the user simply wants email, browsing and letter typing, Linux is what I put in now.
Gone are the need to run 4 spyware programs and 2 Virus scanners just to keep things running.
With a little retraining on Linux, I now don't have to baby-sit and reinstall every 2 weeks.
MS is becomeing more of a Guru OS than Linux from the end-users perspective just because you have to run such a complicated series of diversive apps to keep it running once connected to the Internet.
Thanks for the info, if I was allowed to mod my own threads I'd definitely give that Informative.
I was not aware of the Ubuntu distro. Dam...keep learning something new everyday on Slashdot.
I love the spiritual link from http://www.ubuntulinux.org
"Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others". Ubuntu also means "I am what I am because of who we all are". The Ubuntu Linux distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.
How is it that I'm assuming my opinion is the only one that matters?
I'm simply offering another viewpoint of Linux, one which is certainly welcome to debate. I totally respect that others may want MS apps on Linux. Albeit, it's usually the same people that shouldn't be allowed to turn on a computer. For me personally, I like Linux as a guru option; it keeps the stupid people away. ( you know, the ones who buy into Nigeria money transfers and Rolex watches )
All I was doing was providing information. Don't shoot the messenger!:->
I can totally appreciate a person refusing to pay, not because they think it should be free, but because they find out that the service was not worth the price.
Why don't you stay away from making assumptions? Did I say I was pirating? (Notice my correct spelling of the word). Thought so.
Also, I hardly think Xandros is doing anything for Linux's reputation.
I personally do NOT want Microsoft products running on Linux. Linux's reputation is doing fine without MS.

Didn't think to Froogle...I Googled and eBayed though.

$250 is a bit much for something that looks like it came from a toy store.
Now if you bundle that package into this
http://www.pcalchemy.com/product_reviews_in
I'm buying!
HTPC cases rock.
Ya I guess, its just that when you want to start pumping hard drives, its going to cause an early life on the power supply or worse, crash the drives.
MythTV is a great suggestion.

Some guys are using the Intel Integrated motherboards with no problem, although I don't think they are using the graphics part.
Here is a better case in that case.
http://www.athenatech.us/a100bb.htm
Also, http://www.byopvr.com/ has dome good case suggestions.
PC Alchemy has some nice stuff like this:

Now thats something to brag about.
Anyone dealing in computers has seen this already, so its definitly not news.
I think the significance is to show the next rush of computer design to integrate with home electronics. Specifically the media center.
It really won't fit well with home electronics however. You need a stackable design.
220w power supply? enough to power the front display.
Intel integration.
Graphics shared memory.
Its a step in the right direction, but that's not going to be a conversation piece to brag about.
Dam ugly.
Now if you want to compete with Apple, make the case transparent.
Anyone have prices of this yet?
Its not in the Canadian channels yet.
lol!
..."I set my mind in motion".
:->
I busted a gut after reading the intro and this is the first post I see,
Now will we have to watch out for fat floating guys?
Anyone have a price for the CD blanks?
I got sucked into the DVD Double Layer hype.
Not readily available and if you find them, the price is rediculous.
Can they look at a BillBoard, Magazine or Internet Page?
Thats the "Call Hunting" feature.
;-)
Anyway, the $15 is from another service.
(Didn't think anyone was paying attention.)

For you and I no doubt, but service is not free to those without the means to an end.

Hell, I'm phoneing those people right now!
Time to buy a plane ticket I guess.
I'd mod this Interesting, Informative and Funny.
Its so interesting that there exists a religion that won't allow contact with land line devices.
Yet TV is ok?
Informative for anyone who has not known this.
and Funny as hell to see how they get around the problem.

"...end up banging you head against the table trying to fix it."
Ya especially when it is so ridden with worms, malware, spyware, crapware...
I just ran into a Windows install with adware that embedded itself so well that 2 spyware programs and 2 virus programs could not detect it.
I was going to try 3, but at that point its a reinstall.
I can totally appreciate a person refusing to pay, not because they think it should be free, but because they find out that the service was not worth the price.

I totally agree!
Now where can I get this all inserted into my skull cap?
lol...no doubt it will have an open source project for every item listed. :)
