Because in a lot of cases short wires to the engine is more important than having the unit in a less harsh location.
It also means you wont have to split up the ECU into a processor unit and an IO bit. The IO has to be on the engine or you would have to bring high voltage / high current signals into the dashboard... not a good thing.. AT ALL...
You dont need a high frequency processor to run an ECU.. The complexity of software like win 3.11 running on a 25mhz 486sx is staggering compared to those ECUs. They are built to be safe and reliable, not to be powerful.
If you need more than 128mhz you're doing it wrong.
As a comparison... Kollsnes Gas Processing plant has ABB MFP controllers for control of for instance huge 30mw compressors. These controllers run at... wait for it... 25mhz. They're so reliable that we have never had one go down since 1996. They're not powerful, but they're daaaymn reliable... So reliable that it is hard to get the customer to upgrade to newer and more powerful units because it -just- -works-.
I suspect the accusation holds in general, I have to admit that I never bought games while in college, mostly because it cost so damn much compared to my meager funds... Now that I make a boatload (a tiny boat for now...) of money I can afford to spend some money on games.
Oh... and Steam's "9.99" and "4.99" games are dangerous... as are all the other online stores with such games... like the android marketplace.. Way below the pain threshold so I tend to hit "buy" without thinking... suddenly I've spend a few hundred bucks over the course of 3 months.
That is just the steam games I own. I have a bunch of other games bought through other stores and even some actual physical boxes sitting around. (Like the C&C games (all of them even..))
So yes, I will buy games if the few hours spent on the pirated version are enjoyable.
Those could still hold anywhere from a few hundred volts to 9.6kV (At least over here in Norway).
The knife looks a bit iffy too as it could easily cause a short between the insulated conductor and the wire/cable used to support it.. Not very covert if you take out the power in a neighborhood now is it >.
I never buy games (Blizzard releases being an exception) without testing them first for this very reason. It is very hard to know if the game is a piece of junk or good without running it for a few hours. Usually I find the game is arse in the first few hours and delete it.. If it turns out to be fun? I buy it as long as it is available as a digital download.
I end up junking 90% of the stuff I download but the library of games I -do- end up buying makes me happy ^.^
I've found that when you overlay the MST3K 'shadow' and put it up on a 42" tv at a party it can be horribly amusing for everyone to make up comments about the movie.
Even the girls find it hilarious:p (Feel I have to point this out as I suspect I will be flamed to hell for suggesting this:p)
I'm Norwegian and recently spent 8 days in the US... During that time I had the chance to actually see how a tiny part of the US actually is.. (for a tourist anyway:p).
Security at the airport was a -hell- of a lot less time-consuming and annoying compared to the one in Amsterdam...
Going through customs and having my passport checked? Took less than a minute...
Me: "Yep, here for blizzcon and spending way too much money on stuff I dont really need *grin*"
Guy behind counter: "Oh, the gaming convention? Have fun, and dont forget to sleep!"
People in general? Friendly and didnt run into any idiots during my stay...
Cars: Fecking huge, and silly... Though comfortable they were!;)
Internet at hotel: Slow as dogshit... how they can legally call it broadband I dont understand.. 3-4kb/sec upstream is painful when you are uploading pictures at a meg a pop:p
Money?
Please for $deity's sake get rid of the myriad of coins.... Pennies?... really?.... pennies?
And stores dont accept large bills?... meh... I came over with ten 100 dollar bills and had to visit a bank to break it up into 10s and 20s to actually be able to spend it on anything... that is just silly... even the hotel couldnt split em...
I'm sleepy and cant remember anything else at the moment but overall it is a nice country to be in for the most part. Random stupidity that makes the news completely blanket out that for large parts of the world though. As most dont visit they base their view on the media coverage alone... which is mildly put unfortunate;)
And all that information should be stored in a database for easy searching.
"How many DSO02 digital output cards are in use at **** plant today and where are they located?" should be a simple question to answer with a few queries. Especially for the time in the future when DSO02 cards are no longer available as spare parts and you need to move to a different type of card....
Probably not nearly as problematic in pure server racks but surely a pain in the ass for anyone managing a complex control system at a plant.
I think people forget one thing when discussing inventory of servers.... the systems for keeping an inventory are already there. Dont invent one yourself, just get a reliable system from a vendor capable of giving you what you want... It hurts me to suggest it but S@P is a decent system for these things. (Even though we jokingly call it 'the german's revenge for losing the second world war'...)
Telenor in Norway does this already in a limited way.
If they detect large amounts of email originating from your network they will block the sending of email. (by blocking outgoing connections to the standard mailserver ports).
From what I've read of their limited releases of information on the programme it works quite well. They of course contact you letting you know that you have this problem. Usually through email but if you do not reply they call you;)
My brother got infected by a worm a while back and my father was not pleased:p Suddenly he couldnt send email... whops?:p (Oh, and they allow you to email to 'internal' addresses though to allow you to contact them to resolve the issue..)
But come on, that sentence is badly written in the first place.. It is so easy for someone without the full knowledge of the English language to get the wrong idea...
Where I work they made a conscious decision to allow the USB sticks due to it being so convenient as a way to move files. Burning files to cds when moving them between systems is a pain.
You cant exploit a service you cant communicate with.
And I'm not talking about email-attachment exploits as these should be handled by the anti-virus software.
The machine where the thumbdrive is inserted is probably going to be hosed, but the rest of the machines on the network have a chance to avoid it if the vulnerable service is not accessible at all.
Working in the process control industry I can attest to firewalls sometimes being a pain in the ass...
But I am more than willing to live with having to open a port every leap year.. I've done it once in 2 years and the firewall is not that permissive of stuff...
And I run all kinds of crud on the machine.. ModbusTCP simulators, serial server connections on odd ports, PLC programming tools over tcp/ip and various other odds and ends.. Most of it is whitelisted already, but on the odd chance that it isnt I whitelist it (once in 2 years...) and send an email to support asking them to whitelist said app. Works quite well and hardly destroys productivity.
Not anywhere near as much as a nasty worm infestation does... hate those >.
Say what now?.... If this is even possible there is something really wrong with the SD card in question...

Your GPS unit is not an "automotive cpu"... It is a consumer product fitted into a car.
The automative processor is what controls your fuel injection, ABS and other such functions.
There is a world of difference between the two.
Great to see feedback :)

Which is why testing the pirated version first is unfortunately the only way to go these days.
I wish there was a better way, but there isnt.
1. Download pirated version.
2. Test pirated version.
3. If good? Buy. Alternatively: if shite, delete.
This serves me well as it makes me look at my game library with fondness and not vile hatred ;)
If I paid for it I would be pissed, but I didnt.

If it is that critical, keep a spare in stock.

Bwhahha,if only I could mod :p
Selective quoting is wonderful.
But come on, that sentence is badly written in the first place.. It is so easy for someone without the full knowledge of the English language to get the wrong idea...
Personally I think this is a valid question to ask as it is easy for someone to tunnel-vision on their solution or question.
Groups come and go, that is to be expected.
Some will be busted but they wont get em all...

Discovery HD looks like arse on my 42" 1080p tv... Unless I download the high quality rips of off torrent sites....
This makes me a sad bunny :(
You'll need Razor, reloaded, skidrow and the rest of the gangs for that ;)
