I know logically this is the case, but the difference to me is the magnitude. Can one really expect to patent their five line "hello world" program? The 302 method is already a defined standard in the RFC, which is the only reason that this approach would work for IBM. I can see if they created a new plugin or had the standard adopt their method, it would be a valid case. The transportation department puts in a turn right lane to the road to my house. If am am the first one to make that right turn, can I patent that instance of using the existing method?
. . . but maybe I am missing the obvious. Couldn't you just always ask the recipient "Did you get that e-mail/memo/TPS Report?" I mean are phones and dialogue really that uncool and inapropriate in modern society. Or maybe just include at the bottom of your e-mail "Please reply, Sincerly, Joe Somebody"
I dunno, I am going back to that bright, sunlit place full of people on the otherside of the door.
Can this really be a valid patent? I mean it is describing a method to defeat a specific instance, but it is using http standards that have already been defined. It is like having scissors used for cutting paper but using them to cut ribbon at christmas time. Just because it passed the clerk at the office, does it really stand a chance of passing a reasonable man test in a court?
Who would of thought not knowing the history questions on your SAT's would be such a big deal. It's the 1977 California Personality Index all over again. You would think society may have matured just a bit over the years.
Are you nutz? This is a one of a kind Jeff origional P-p-p-powerbook. There is only one in the world, and how much do you wanna bet that if Gianluca posted it on e-bay, some poor/.er would put a bid or two on it?
What about a general abstraction layer at the OS level? I am by no means at that programming level, but could you not have calculations that are proven to run good on GPU's (int's maybe?) be redirected by the OS, and the rest just sent to the CPU as normal? To me this would take advantage for all programs (except the games that want exclusive GPU use) running on the system instead of only those coded to take advantage of it. I know a few programs in the oil industry that could use all the bogomips they could get.
You weren't supposed to drink it yet, I need you all to die with me. Haven't you ever been in a
cult before? If I die alone, then it will just be freaky.
Geek license firmly stapled to my wallet, I was always good in physics but could not hold a lecture on quantum theory. are you actually sending the particle or using the information on where the particle problably is at that moment as the key? I bow my head in shame:-S
But you're not role-playing a character. You're playing a video game
They can be both. I know it was not a vast system, but even a game like GTA 2 had three different gangs that you were either friends or enemys with depending upon the tasks you did. This simple feature was lacking in the yes, still amazing, sequels, but shows that it can be done, just takes a little more coding.
Floppy disks are the main frame type for the small office or school sneakernet. Combine them with a post-it header or enclose them with a addressed envelope and they are routeable through peer-to-peer networks of co-workers. Just be wary of coffee mugs and staplers and it is the most cost-efficient wireless network available (how much does a grunt cost nowadays?)
The biggest difference I see is that any kid with their new pc smelling wal-mart special can run the nice GUI based attacks against windoze systems while Linux attacks usually require a basic reading level. No system is totally secure, it's just a matter of making the hack las longer then the average attenti. . . . sweet. . . blinking lights and buzzers. I wonder if monster garage is on.
Destroy the origional vampire and the rest will vanish!!

By driving the price up I would bet they will make less money
Unfortunatly this is win win for them:
sales go up = They make more money
Sales go down = They blame P2P networks for decreased sales and launch more profitable lawsuits.
Maybe, ya might just think, it is the sleasiness and questionable practices of these companies that drove people away from honest purchases? Somehow there is a lot less guilt when you steal from the theif. . . .
You mean they can't buy their audience?

This is similar (bare with me here) to a complaint by the MPAA some time ago about blaming cell phone and IM users for low box office sales sincec they could tell their friends much quicker if the movie sucked or not. Maybe if they actually took the effort to make quality fimls/music instead of releasing ANY idea that crosses their desks, we would flock to them again. I paid money for the spiderman cd, but felt ripped of just renting dare-devil and The Leauge of Extraordinary Gentlemen, for example.
Quality products create a pull marketplace where people actually want to buy the product without the mounds of marketing budgets. Maybe if they cut down on the Make-the-band, pop-stars, american-idol manufactured stars and put talented folk on open stages in central park, they could get the industry back in the positive spotlight.
Actually, I am kind of proud of this being old news. Re-affirms my hopes that not many/. users get, let alone read, their monthly AOL-Members Newsletter. *sniff*
So after RTFPdf and realizing how much I love watching the degrag screens in 9x (would make a great screen saver), the question begs to be asked: Where can I get a home sized version of this to play with, possibly between three to five computers and realistic chunck sizes?

You got to know someone at M$ is pissed they never thought of it before.

Arresting terrorists is not the gripe, it's the potential terrorists and the process of lableing thereof.

Why not, Slashdot crumbled under the cash offerings?
I can never remember, is that sadist or masochistic?
