There are times I'll find myself so frustrated that all I can think in my head is "The sheer fact that I'm more intelligent than you should make what comes out of my mouth strike like thunder. I'm smarter, listen to me."
The question is, how do you know?
If you can't explain your position in a way that your friend can understand, then I'm going to have to question your definition of "intelligence" and your subsequent self-ranking within.
Step one: lay down the crack pipe.
Step two: stop watching the fucking Matrix.
Don't want Google knowing about your fetishes? Don't use any of their products which might take notice of such things. They're providing web services, for chrissake, not requiring you to wear the Mark of the Beast to do business...
There are serious issues that need to be addressed, yes. But they need to be discussed with something other than shrill paranoia.
I think that I am going to give Ruby a pass, at least for now.
As much as I love Ruby, the Python libraries just seem to be, at present, a lot more immediately useful to me than the Ruby ones.
Knowing that Matz is working on 'Rite', intended to be 'Ruby 2', has helped me hold off. (Although perversely, GvR discussing Python3000 hasn't had the same effect.)
But whichever language you choose, you've got to have some respect for a designer whose motto is "I work very eagerly to be lazy":)
So they somewhow photoshoped a more or less high field out of the raw and rendered it with some "grey rocks" or so texture setting, because the standart white snow peaks isnt fitting...
Wasn't there an article here some months back analysing the accuracy of the colours NASA chose for rendering the Mars images, purporting that they'd be more an off-grey than orange-red? At least in this instance they're clearly outlining that the colours aren't correct.
When did it become so damn hip here to rag on everything? It doesn't seem to matter what an article is about, the majority of posters want to dismiss the content as pointless and trivial...which wouldn't piss me off so much if the same posters were actually doing pointed and non-trivial things.
Is the US actually trying to stymie computer science research for itself?
Maybe they had a crisis of conscience after pulling the heart out of Australia's IT industry (in exchange for "free" trade...apparently a usage completely different from either speech or beer) and decided to hamstring their own, just to play fair?
*sigh* I know, I know, I've just got to let it go that my government willingly fucked over my future for political jockeying and short-term economic gain.
Opinion polls are at odds with government policy because people don't inform themselves as to what the government is doing.
Shouldn't "what the government is doing" be what the people want? I know it's the tail that wags the dog these days, but when did we just roll over and accept that?
The problem is that the number of congressman is capped at 435 since the year 1913. This means that each congressman serves about a half-million constituents. This was not the intent of the founders. Previous to the year 1913, as the population grew, more congressman were added.
Christopher Alexander describes this in the pattern 'Populations of 7000'...if your elected official represents too many more people than that, you tend not to have a voice in the community.
What makes this especially frustrating is, as he points out, this isn't exactly new wisdom...
They've completely turned me off to using it for any academic purpose.
If you seriously, seriously only used one reference source for a topic you knew nothing about then you've got absolutely no right to refer to any purpose of your's as "academic".
(Not that I'd try to `ban' a word, but I *do* hate it. Almost as much as `surf' for clicking on web pages.)
Certainly beats getting uptight over trivial issues, like the constant degrading of individual freedoms across the world. Thank god we've got real concerns to get worked up about. Where would we be without finding fault in other people's metaphors?
I'm not interesting in helping people pass kiddie porn or pirated movies through my server (which I assume would be a primary use of this)
Why? Seriously...what makes it obvious to you that despite the fact you don't want to peddle kiddy porn, that clearly the majority of people do?
Has villifying the imaginary 'other' become so habitual for you that you can't possibly imagine that anyone other than you would want their personal freedom?
Can we start talking about tech again? Or do we have to keep rehashing the same tired jokes?
In some ways, these should be (and sometimes, amazingly, even are) shorthand ways for this community to acknowledge/recognise repetitive, pointless arguments and cut them off at the pass. "I for one welcome..." should be the way to defuse the inevitable "But this just leads to mind control!!!!" hyperbole that some avid readers of SF seemingly have to take things to. So many posts constantly ignore the real topic simply to regurgitate a barely related quote...
Unfortunately, it seems like the in jokes are becoming the conversation here.
Which begs the question: can anyone recommend a forum where these issues are being seriously discussed? Preferably one where the participants are willingly to admit that they just might not be the ultimate fucking authority on everything. There's only so many "I'm comfortably mired in 1960s technology, I don't understand what your problem is" responses I can take.
C'mon, don't be so disingenuous...what people want is for Microsoft to produce a secure OS that doesn't require them to (at some future point) pay for an additional "optional" security update.
Spyware removers like Giants' product are bandaids at best; this isn't a solution to the Windows OS' security issues, it's a blatant attempt to cash in on a growth market their negligence is responsible for.

And when you want informative, you get "This book is a weapon of mass construction."
Mmmm, style over substance...
I'm so sick of people here being proud of their ignorance. If you don't know what he's done, isn't it up to you to find out before passing judgement?
Oh right, it's up to everyone else to do that for you as well.
Yes, and one day I might be God Emperor, but do you really think that's something worth worrying about right now?

And how does this differ from, say, convincing people that your way is the better option?
Well, one is opt-in and the other opt-out...and I'm sorry, but I'm always going to be in favour of the former :)
By providing people with free tools that they can choose not to use if they don't want them?
That doesn't really fit with any definition of "control" that I'm familiar with.
Your critics might like to look into how the US uses 'free' trade agreements to "convince" others to adopt their patent system model.
How do we know eXeem Lite doesn't contain its own spyware? Because of the "Lite" in its name?
This seems too much like someone playing off the Kazaa/Kazaa-Lite mindshare to position their software exactly where they want it to be.

No, so now we're getting dupe dupe dupes.

Keep fighting the good fight!
Jesus WEPT it's time some of you assholes got out of your fucking bedrooms and actually THOUGHT about the fucking world around you.
Why? Seriously...what makes it obvious to you that despite the fact you don't want to peddle kiddy porn, that clearly the majority of people do?
Has villifying the imaginary 'other' become so habitual for you that you can't possibly imagine that anyone other than you would want their personal freedom?
How lonely a person are you?
Something other than working for Apple? :)
Just swallow the goddamn pill.

7) Will it let me make cliched, pointless observations about the Slashdot community rather than actually contribute something worthwhile?
