  1. Re:It's a marketing set up... on Buzzword du Jour: DRM · · Score: 2, Insightful

While I think that is a horribly blunt over generalization of the situation, for all intents and purposes it is accurate.

And if it isn't accurate at portraying how 'things will go down,' I do think it is an accurate estimation of how it will be foisted upon us.

I'd like to have faith and think they "there's just no way Joe Sixpack will see the reduced functionality as a fair trade-off for the cheap tricks and half-ass 'value' that may be introduced by DRM (though obviously just as possible without it)", well, what can I say? I'm an optimist, though cynical and jaded. Seen too much of life not to be.

DRM doesn't seem so purposely intent on removing flexibility for the end user so much as enhancing the level of control for the content producer/distributor.

While this is merely a matter of symantics, and you have no argument from me about 'removed flexibility' being the end result, it is key to be even handed in reading, interpreting and explaining what they say, what they mean and what that means to us.

  4. Re:original hip hop ? on Sir Mix-A-Lot Using Weed To Distribute Music · · Score: 2, Interesting

While, and I quote, "hip hop has always been based on other peoples beats and breaks..." is mostly true, and I can mostly agree with it, when you say "all ripping off..." and "...just to rip off other peoples music" I have to staunchly disagree.

It's one thing if you don't understand or relate to the genre, but please know where fact ends and opinion begins.

Hip hop, and techno, and a plethora of other electronic based (also known as 'groove' based) music uses samples of other peoples works. Does that make their preferred outlet of musical creation any less valid? Are you one of those guys that thinks that unless there is a drummer, bassist, keyboards, guitar, singer, et al making the music that it somehow requires less talent to produce?

As a (self proclaimed) music producer working in the digital realm (with limited analog experience) who has worked with live bands, hip hop, and various forms of techno acts....as well as my own band and experimental electronic productions I have found the strenghts of various forms of expression through production......not only that but the difficulty/challenges inherent to each form.

That being said I believe it to be terribly closed-minded of anyone to think that simply because a beat or rythm was sampled that it somehow degrades the quality or talent required to produce it. Hell, the way I see it doing just that serves as an homage to the original...."I couldn't do that myself or even come close...nothing captures the feeling I'm looking for quite like that...." etc, etc, etc.

Failing that I'd like to see you do it.

To sum this up, it appears to be something you just don't understand. That's fine, but please make it clear when you are speaking (or typing) the difference between fact and your own opinion. To yourself, and those hearing or reading it.

To answer your question (but deny your insinuation that capturing Osama had anything at all to do with Bush's job of running our country)...yes. I believe bush has captured him...

We shall see how things pan out come election Time.

Perhaps I'm just a paranoid conspiracy theorist, but wouldn't it be just a tad bit ironic if right before election-time bush wheeled out Osama? "Look who we captured!"

I know I'm not the first to consider this, and probably won't be the last.

I'd say we haven't heard from ol' Osama 'cuz Bushyboy has him holed up somewhere, waiting for the perfect time to put that trophey on display. Too bad the only value the trophey has is what it's winner has appraised it for.

Right there I see a number of 'warning signs' First of all, use of the term 'broadband like'...if that doesn't seem highly suspect to you, perhaps the overuse of common buzzwords

    'advanced web acceleration technology'

Then we've got '...without the expense of highspeed services...', attempting to appeal to the 'value conscious' (read: cheap)

    Bah humbug.

  9. Excellent....? on Netscape-Branded ISP Launching February 2004 · · Score: 5, Interesting

While this could be part of a 'two pronged attack' on MSN, I highly doubt that. It will most certainly be a fizzle if they are merely offering basic dialup service. Unless they have a standard 'dialup accelerator' or some other value added feature that sets them apart from the rest of the dialup services, there's not much more room in this market IMHO. Unless of course they start this as their 'basic' level of service and offer a very cheap broadband solution along side (eventually). I fail to see that happening so long as DSL lines have to be bought from SBC and cable lines bought from Comcast. ~Dan
