    ASK A TYPICAL NAPSTER USER

    Dear Typical Napster User,

My father wants me to attend the local vo-tech school for fibre optics training. I would rather go to the state college, but it's more expensive. My grades in high school were pretty good, though nobody is mailing me scholarship offers. Dad is willing to pay for the vo-tech and said he is not going to give me any $ if I choose college over vo-tech. I have to choose soon. Can you help me change his mind?
    Thanks in advance,
    SoonToBeSchoolboy

    ....

    Dear STBS,

dude! i just got the latest N'SYNC song just now, and it ROCKS!! it's awesome! and i didn't have to even pay no $ for it! yeah it gots some skips in it and cuts off 8 seconds before the end, but i LOVE that band! and even though i spent 3 hrs dl'ing it through my 56k modem, it was worth every minute! i'm currently downloading 83 other songs, from 4 other users. woo hoo! i never have to pay for my music again! napster OWNZ! screw the RIAA! what motivates us to exchange $ for stuff?

www is going to rock dinosaur houses and labels, and they know it. old school (>10 yrs ago!) writers and musicians *needed* the publishers to print/distribute books and records on a large scale. in mr ellison's case, his publisher gave him $ in exchange for content. today, mr ellison could just as easily publish his original works on the web. folks could buy access to new pages at his website, supporting future works by the author. if they were interested enough to exchange $ for content.

as for slacker, information access through public libraries was an extension of the belief that information wants to be free. www is an approximation of the ideal.

My UT cable connection now rulez. (gimme less than 50ping, and i'll take you down on your own box :)

eventually, market forces will drive better connections throughout USA. a lot of effort was expended here in creating a networking telecoms infrastructure now called the web. and before that, there was the federally mandated dial tone 24/7/365 to all phones paying for the service. at a time when european connections were sometimes spotty.

"Then what exactly am I getting when I purchase music?" is a good question. there is no license involved. you don't license a book. what's different for an album? the music industry's implied claim of license is bogus, and we should all call shenannigans on the studios/labels. they're not happy about the fair-use thing. they imply that any copying of content is in violation of copyright. it's incredible. from the site:

    http://www.riaa.com/Protect-Campaign-1.cfm

""Piracy" generally refers to the illegal duplication and distribution of sound recordings and includes four specific forms:
1)Pirate recordings are the unauthorized duplication of only the sound of legitimate recordings, as opposed to all the packaging, i.e. the original art, label, title, sequencing, combination of titles etc."

the science project shouldn't have been pulled, of course. mebbe it hit a little too close to the bone. mebbe there is a problem with race relations around here. what are they going to do, hide the symptoms and hope the disease clears up on its own? sometimes that works.

I'm replying to agree with bbcat, and to possibly engage in a public discussion on why the subscription service is dead in the water.

Imagine if, 20 years ago, the Atari company had access to StarOffice on 600Mhz Pentium3's. How many more 2600's would've shipped? Would 900Mhz Athlons/Office2000 have been better? Should they have upgraded? Has the business model changed so much that they would've been unable to integrate the "productivity machines"? Or maybe it wouldn't have made a damn bit of difference either way.

There is now an communications infrastructure only *dreamed* of since the dawn of civilization. As a species we've made a quantum leap from where we started. I think that, given the tools we currently hold, there's nothing stopping us from....

#The thing is, subscriptions are just being realistic - if you pretend that you're still going to be using those P3's running Office xxxx in 5 years time, you're wrong#
let's see who's pretending and who's being realistic. It's my opinion the subscriptions are pretending to give us continous improvement value for our $$$. At this point, what more could They give us? More bells, whistles, and another monthly bill. Boooo.

Is this the new luddite voice? Are the winds of change starting to chill me in the autumn of my life? Or is good-enough-5-year-old software/hardware going to become the standard instead of the butt of wiseass cracks from punkass kids?

It sounds like somebody took mssr griffith's action personally and allowed their emotions to get the best of them, causing them to over-react. No way should the kid have been suspended for this nonviolent demonstration. It was a victimless crime, like punching someone in the dark :)
But seriously, this needs more exposure. Griffith is guilty only of thoughtcrime, which is NOT punishable in the United States. Had the school admins not suspended him, there would be nothing to talk about (Some random kid refused to take the title of "Homecoming King"- Big Fat Hairy Deal).
