    When they threatened penny arcade i didn't take a stand cuz those comix weren't all that funny;

    When they outlawed DeCSS i didn't take a stand cuz i don't watch DVDs anyway;

    When they passed the DMCA i didn't take a stand cuz, well, IANAL, and that shit's confusing;

    When they used CIPA against pulic libraries i didn't take a stand cuz i read mostly newspapers.

    BUT

    When they outlaw open source, heads will roll.

    I picked up an old NES. It worked, w/ some of the trimmings, but it was giving me lip about every cart I tried. An excellent long-term fix involved accessing the springs inside the console slot and re-bending them back into postion.

    It was easy enough to find an appropriate how-to website using the google.

    But showing one's age isn't a *bad* thing, is it? I thought one of the benefits of getting old was being allowed to yell "HEY YOU KIDS GET OUTTA MY FRONT YARD!" and "THESE PUNKASS WHIPPERSNAPPERS DON'T KNOW HOW GOOD THEY'VE GOT IT NOWADAYS".

    i saw this guy on johnny carson who could tell you what record he was holding without looking at the label, only the groove pattern. he could only do classical, but sometimes you hafta specialise.

    reminds me also of the trick question "how many grooves on a LP?"

    relatively on-topic, i'm concerned about another maxis product called "the sims" which relies heavily on having the CD in the drive at all times, reading from it constantly, absolutely *killing* my drive. can't they just put the whole thing on my gigantic HD? c'mon, we're way past the days of having to run the OS from the 5.25" floppy. or mebbe that's just me again.

    It's probly in MS's best interest to make CLI mean anything *but* "command line interface", since that's antithetical to their windows philosophy. I'd bet MS would LOVE to transform those letters into something else and distance themselves from their CLI past.

    I'm not sure it's coincidence that they're appropriating the acronym.

    Hey Zeus the voice of reason has a name, and its name is Sanity. There's an old adage that says "Start as you intend to continue" which in Bill's case resonates loudly. The company has come up with a total of _zero_ innovations over the course of its lifetime, and the few original ideas (Bob and that fucking paperclip come to mind) have gone over like lead balloons. If these MS bastards have *any* say in how things will work in the future, the world will look a little more Orwellian, and i mean that in a bad way.

    From the "story" link we find the fuel capacity is 8.5 gallons. Assuming a best-case 7 mpg , the ultimate superbike has a cruising range of almost 60 miles! Solar Cars can do better than that! (Of *course* the Solar Cars can't do zero to sixty with nearly the aplomb, but the 60 mile limit struck me as lowish.)

    "Tottenville" made me think of "Toten Hosen", which is German for "dead pants", so it would be "deadville".

    As for Dobson, a Dobson Unit is the most basic measure used in ozone research. The unit is named after G.M.B. Dobson, one of the first scientists to investigate atmospheric ozone (~1920 - 1960). He designed the 'Dobson Spectrometer' - the standard instrument used to measure ozone from the ground. The Dobson spectrometer measures the intensity of solar UV radiation at four wavelengths, two of which are absorbed by ozone and two of which are not.

    Well, the *was* talking about changing the weather, and he may have even presaged our ozone issues!

    does anyone else see this as part of a MS larger strategy of world domination? edge out the little guys, marginalize the individual?

    I am hereby patenting this "pufferfish pc" idea. Nobody else can claim to have EVER thought of the "pufferfish pc" idea, I am the FIRST and will PROVE it by getting a PATENT. Don't even THINK of putting pufferfish in your pc without getting my prior CONSENT and approval and a receipt for your MONEY. There are thousands of slimy LAWYERS who will help me make them a few SHECKELS on this one.     Maybe moderately salty or "brackish" water would make the best medium for an aquarium pc. Pufferfish, for example, would make perfect companions for internet surfers. They are hearty and longlived and withstand a wide variety of temperatures and water conditions.

    i've heard that wal-mart employs as many people as live in north dakota. while ND may not be the most populous state in the union, this is a vivid illustration of how dependant we are on the socially-constructed incorporations (embodiments) of capitalism. the food thing is kinda missing the point while hinting at the larger problems inherently associated with socialism. x probly wanted to point out an interpretation of the op-ed piece so thoughtfully copied-and-pasted from the overburdened k5 site.
