just btwn you and me and the trolls:) i know on one level there is no "right" and "wrong", but on another level, it is Wrong to abuse ppl- and we can do the Right thing. it's all relative, of course. in a given situation, there is a choice between Good and Bad. this is not the same thing as absolute Right and Wrong.
bronowski has lots of Good things to say. hitler was trying to do the Right Thing as he saw it. what is the difference between these two men? reason and enlightenment, imho.
what i was getting at was the idiocy of the original post saying we should take the decisions of judges at face value. posing the what-if led signail11 to believe we should respect the authority of the robe rather than analyzing the case on the basis of its facts. there may not be any absolute truth here, but i feel the judge made the right call, and would've been outraged if he had "gone the other way"
i've just taken a look at the rest of the crap signail11 has posted recently, and i am NOT impressed.
There is Right and there is Wrong. If the judge had "gone the other way" he would have been Wrong. We shouldn't follow Wrong laws. Call it civil disobedience or contempt, but blindly obeying an ignorant ruling is at least as great a crime against society as shooting up a school. The day we have a population of clueless sheep is the day that Right and Wrong won't matter, and will be the day _I_ start shooting up the place, cause I don't want to live there.
How the original post got moderated to a 5 is beyond me. ugh. We're one day closer.
Hi bob:) Money is not an object in this case. Sony will do whatever it takes to stay in the good graces of the DVD-powers-that-be. (Aren't they one of the powers-that-be anyway? Did they help the MPAA put the norweigian kid in jail?) And another thing- isn't regional encoding illegal in the first place? market manipulation and all that? It's getting pretty silly around here lately with this whole DVD thing. I can't help but feel a "disturbance in the Force"....
I don't know how many American Football fans are among the/. crowd but does anyone remember when the Super Bowl was started? As an afterthought aside, they charged about 1$ admission for that first championship game. How much will it eventually cost to have your ad placed on the veritable reigning king of web sites? For their annual Puzzle Bowl?
you might be giving DB more credit for realising things than he deserves. it's telling that while he says there wasn't even a remote possibility of mp3 affecting him, he concedes that there is no turning back the tide. i agree with the folks who feel bowie's just jumping on the "geeks are cool today" style trend. and DB has been a fashion victim for too long for me not to read between his lines.
don't be so quick to put yourself in the seat of deciding who is and who is not a musician. lots of Real Musicians screech and irritate and are even more ridiculous than andy warhol. laurie anderson is a pioneer, without whom the world would be a slightly duller place;j
read the interview as more of bowie's positioning himself as the prime mover in tech-music. you'll see self promotion in every word he speaks. it's good to know bowie couldn't care less about mp3 while he is concerned about how prince's reaction to mp3 "looked so reactionary" bowie's good at what he does, but he came off in this interview as sort of slimy&mdashlike a politician trying to get elected. the lyrics to "savior machine" aren't remotely like the scenario he was describing. i went for a walk today and it was ok
this is obviously a lot of eyewash created by a political system which doesn't quite Get the internet. it would be more funny if not for the tragedy involved in letting the landed gentry make the rules. as long as the pen is mightier than the sword, it's all fun and games. when we have to take up arms against our oppressors, somebody's gonna lose an eye.
1899- paved roads, tv, supermarkets, etc, didn't exist and it would have been difficult for the average human to even imagine the way things have turned out. maybe without Human Nature's competitive streak we wouldn't be nearly so well connected to each other.
still, there are way too many voices around here who are quick in slamming even a modest move by The State of Maine to acknowledge the 3rd Human Nature revolution.
sorry, mlefranc, but the original post was only reinforced by your response. i consider myself fluent in the dos/win3x9x systems and try to keep up w/hardware.
for reasons that would seem obvious to a/. crowd, i want to learn linux. from the looks of things so far, i'd have to apply an old hackerism- "if it was hard to write it oughta be hard to read!"
for better or worse, it seems there is nothing user friendly about linux if you don't want to Get Involved. most people couldn't spare a square for their OS.
if you want the desktop, you gotta make it a little more inviting. catch more flies w/honey and all.
The idea of "digitribes", and the 15 minutes that slashdot is going to get for a documentary, and that random quote about power corrupting bring to my mind the question of what the future holds for governments. In an age when we might not need our Representatives to go to DC for our voices to be heard, could there be a/. effect in the next election? I full well understand that most 'puterheads are notoriously apolitical, but what if???
So I'm be able to PURCHASE the (15) $50 games. Doing the math for the new parameters, I've only got $650 left for my "state of the art" machine. Granted, it is a multi-purpose machine, so there are gonna be compromises....
just btwn you and me and the trolls :)

it's "horse", not "whores" eh? this is the dawning of the age of bavaria....
:) it's all so very, very good.
i'm sort of embarrased to even REPLY to a comment with a subject line like this. it's the price we pay for free speech: free sometimes means cheap.

I'm pretty sure that if you BUY the games, it's legal to run 'em on any "console" you want, whether a virtual one or theirs.
