I have to say that STEM education in US is not good enough. For instance, kids start to use calculators too early. Using calculator is a great way to simplify many computation tasks. However, it deprives kids the opportunities to THINK and ESTIMATE. Both are crucial for STEM jobs.
In universities, I have encountered engineering students who did not know what they should really know. Well, they eventually got their degrees. In my opinion, it is much better off for them to pursue jobs in areas other than STEM.
Lenovo and FutureWei (HuaWei) had been banned for a long while. I have been very surprised to see that China is starting to talk about boycott CSCO and maybe, AAPL right now.
Apparently, the meeting between Xi and Obama was not going well.
That is why welfare states in EU are in deep financial trouble.
In general, one job to support a whole family is not a norm for human race. The easy life will tax future generation heavily.
My goverment takes 45% of my wages in taxes and I still can support whole family with one job + supproting old mother (widow) in former communist state. That is how we do things in Europe...
When I first came to US, I was shocked to see those wood utility poles. It is so ancient. There are many excuses for keeping those.
People need to go to some developing countries, particularly BRIC, to take a look at their infrastructures. Where is the $$ for change?
When I am traveling with my family, we have an ipad and a laptop with us. In the car, my kids and my wife can check whatever over internet. So, 3G is not a must!!

I have been working in a DSL company a few years back. For DSL systems, the AM signals could be an issue since they can couple into the long twist pair lines and then, be fed into receiver.
So far, I got the idea to utilize the long wires (phone lines, power line, etc) to perform short range radio communications or sensors with other devices.
Problems? Many. Overall, it is very hard to control, i.e. taking a lot of noise/interference and emitting a lot of energy (could affect other devices).
1) spatial domain:
beamforming: make sure that the receiver, the transmitter, and the interferer are not aligned in a line.
3D: assume the interferer is on the ground. as long as one of the transmitter or the receiver is in the air/space, there is a good chance to use beamforming to improve reception.
2) narrow band or long code:
Effectively, this is slowing down the data rate. In this way, the SINR for a message can be good enough.
