  1. Biggest Research Scam in Slashdot History?! on Aussie Claims Copper Broadband now 200x Faster · · Score: 1

    His work is in the field of channel capacity computation. The paper has very limit impact due to its model and its assumptions.

    Sorry, there will be no 200x DSL. :-)

  2. Resurrect skype for ebay?! on EBay Admits To Bad Call On Skype · · Score: 2, Informative

    After all, it is not impossible for ebay to use skype effectively even if skype is not profitable independently. Just imagine,

    1) assign a free skype account for each buyer or seller (match skype id to ebay id?)

    2) add a voice message feature to My Ebay (maybe, record conversations as well?)

    3) associate voice messages/conversations to transactions

    4) resolve disputes with voice messages/conversations

    5) how about a little fee for such a convenient service in order to safe-guard the interests of both buyers' and sellers'.

    Well, I may pay a few $$ for this additional 'insurance' for a transaction of a few hundred $$.

  7. A high healthcare growth = an unhealthy thing? on The Engine of US Jobs · · Score: 1

    Fundamentally, the artical missed many points. For example, aging population and abusive/careless lifestyle (leading to obesity and others) are valid issues for human societies. It will cost more money, effort, and resources gradually. In other countries, the same thing is happening as well.

    In order to make a judgement on whether the economy is heathy or not, it is necessary to understand that the market sectors grow in turns! It is not possible for all sectors to grow simultaneously. Moreover, to downplay a fast healthcare growth in recent years is similar to claim a fast housing growth is pure bad. It neglects the fact that the housing market did help to land the US economy after IT bubble.

    IMHO, the fast growth in the health care may trigger another round of growth in IT, manufacture, as well as other market sectors. A couple of reasons are :

    1) We still know very little on ourselves;

    2) There are many barriers waiting for being broken. For example, MS started to penetrating the health care software industry this summer.

    I feel quite excited for the new opportunities actually. Please feel free to drop me a message for any m/billion dollar business idea. If I am your partner, there will be no disappointment. :-)

    One of my dream when I was young was to enter Bell Labs as a top notch scientist/engineer. I had indeed been there in late 90's and it was a down-hill ride. Partially, it is due to the fierce competition that drove down the revenue by 10+ folds. One minute long distance was $1 and you can get 1c now. Overall, industrial research institues need huge $$ support from their business.

    Does anyone want to put more intelligent design theories into the text books? Go ahead. It demonstrates how a strengthening religion power can blindly choke up the air of engineering and science. Take a look at the dark medieval period.
