If the xvid and divx codecs use ASM to speed things up, and they haven't done optimizations for x86_64, it may just be a matter of them revving up the code to see huge speed gains. I know that on my 64 bit linux box gcc seems a hell of a lot faster then it ever did on 32 bit x86.
Yes! All the energy we would ever need is already here, right in front of us! Look outside for a change. The sun, the wind, the motion of water. We just need a way to collect and store it. The next thing you have to do is get the naysayers to stop giving up and start innovating!
Yes, you have a valid point, and theres nothing at all wrong with the iPod photo, or even the iPod for that matter. I guess I just prefer a more general purpose device whenever I can get it for around the same price as a not so general purpose device.
Clearly the x50 ($269) is cheaper than the iPOD ($299) and it has more functionality. I never said anything about the mini, or the shuffle, or any other variation for that matter in my first post. There are other handhelds that are even cheaper are still have the ability to play more formats then the iPOD, I was just stating a fact.
If everyone who bought an iPOD and is commenting on what I am saying because they are taking it personally would stop I think you'd see I am just comparing two products that can do similar things in the same price range.
If you look at the dell as just a music player, then you are right about price except in the following areas.
a) Wireless connectivity to a streaming music source. Such as di.fm or even your mp3 collection at home.
b) Plays more formats than iPOD (potentially could play anything you threw at it if you got the right software or could write it)
If you go outside the bounds of a music player it does, e-mail, web, scheduling, contact lists, games, view pictures (and cheaper then the picture iPOD), and plays movies.
I could continue, but I don't have the time currently
Not to be anti-apple, but if you look at the other side of things, for less then the price of an IPOD (walmart current) you can get a dell Axim X50 http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productde tails.aspx/axim_x50_416?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
You can play MP3, WMA, and probably many other formats with third party programs. The only downfall is that you would have to buy memory cards, so it's not ideal if you want to take your whole 30GB music collection with you. However, if you have a wireless network you can play music straight off of a file server (SAMBA or windows) and easily transfer music files back and forth to get updated songs each day.
I know i've been pro-pda recently, but I use mine for everything, including a music player with a 1 GB flash card.
Wow, just because the comment is not pro apple the parent gets marked as a troll? That was funny... I think some people need to loosen their tighty whities a little...
I know it's not an apple product, but if you like surfing the web from your couch you may want to test out a pocketpc. You can even download many classic books for free in the microsoft reader format. While I was in college I used mine to read moby dick between classes. The current model I have is a dell X50v. It has 802.11b and bluetooth for connectivity. It's really a nice little machine.
I understand that you mean well, but I think that I have to put a spin on this.
"but I think that with games such as GTA there is an underlying issue of responsibility"
What responsibility do you think that the game companies should have when the content is clearly marked in such a way that children should not be viewing it in the first place? Didn't they already take the time to tell you that your kids shouldn't be consuming it?
What makes the content so likely to be played by kids over adults? Adults play the games too, should we not be allowed to play the games merely because a kid could get his hands on it?
Is this any different from pornography? What is stopping kids from clicking "yes I am 18"? When the child does, is the industry somehow "responsible" for it?
What kind of responsibility should that industry have?
I think when you start playing the responsibility game you get into some real grey areas, and that's why I think it should be left to the adults. I think there needs to be more enabling technologies in this area like a configurable chip that reads the ratings off the game and doesn't let the kid play it if it's too high. Maybe they already have this, and if they do, the parents should take the time to learn how to configure it for their child.
Parents need to be more responsible for their children, and if you want to tell me that parents can't be expected to take that much time out to protect them, then they don't deserve them.
"CD's were a cheap way to get loads of storage before flash sizes increased without the costs of HD. Now all but useless. Big, vulnareble to skipping and limited to something like 640mb."
I really don't know where you are getting your information from, but I have a CD based MP3 player and I have never had it skip. You can jog, bike, and hike with the thing and never have a problem. Probably because with the internal cache memory in the player, it doesn't really have to hit the disc that much for more data once it is prebuffered. Plus, if you make sure to keep all of your songs in a library somewhere on a computer the size issue really isn't an issue, considering you can put enough songs on a 700MB cd to not have to worry about needing a new one until you can get to your car/house/tent/hotel or wherever else you can keep a CD wallet. I've had my player for 2 years now, and never had a real complaint with it. I use NiMH batteries in it and they last forever when im playing MP3's. It even sounds great, and I can burn to real cheap media, and make a million different combinations of songs without ever having to worry about deleting anything. As far as the size, the thing may not fit in your shirt pocket without looking funny, but it is the round super slim one so it will fit in just about any jacket pocket, or pants pocket. Provided your pants aren't super tight.
I just think you should look at all the pros and cons of things, not just the cons of one and the pros of another.
"What I don't understand is why not hybrid diesels"
The only problem that I see with this is if you manage use a bio-diesel fuel that is clean burning, you would probably just want to keep it that way. Adding batteries that (right now at least) stop holding a charge would just create waste.
"Solar cells take almost as much energy to make as they put out over their lifetime"
Maybe so, but there has to be a way to refine them, or else plants would never be able to live and grow because all of their energy would be used up creating their "panels".
Then maybe what we need to do is stop giving up on everything and finally start innovating so they don't cost so much to produce and put out more electricity.
We do it with gas (and just about everything else that doesn't have an "easy fix") don't we?
On the topic of electrolysis of water... Why not use the one source of energy just about every other form of life on this planet uses? The sun.
Fields of panels to create the electricity necessary to split the water. 24/7, all around the world, we could be constantly producing hydrogen to power everything. And we could say goodbye to nuclear waste.
Maybe for some reason this would not be possible... But I don't see it.
One resource that has been invaluable to my company is http://glyfx.com/. They make icons, splash screens, etc. It costs money, but it is not that expensive and you can use them for all your projects after just one purchase.
The icons are also high color and very modern, give them a shot.
This is why I really hate when people start wars about one platform over another over security. No one is perfect, and errors like this will happen. The only real way to attempt to prevent flaws like this is more strict code reviews and more testing and debugging. Even those actions won't always find a problem like this because sometimes the problem is outside the bounds of the program's normal operation (ie invalid data in an image that wouldn't be found by testing with real images).
All we can do is hope that there are more of us wearing white hats then there are those of us wearing black hats.
Normally on slashdot when you post an opinion that 200 other people have already brought to light, you are scored as redundant. However, I think in this case the fact that you are still able to see all the praise shows just how much one man can affect more then he could ever imagine.
In my childhood you were one of the people that taught me that the word can't doesn't exist. You helped affirm that ones best effort will always see them through.
And so far, you've been right.
May you live out the rest of your life free of pain and worry, and thank you for helping me become all I had hoped to be.
I don't know if i'm the only one with this problem, but using the connect to server dialog to connect to a samba share is VERY slow to bring up a view of files, and copying is even worse. I have also noticed that if I used smbmount while gnome is running I sometimes get an oops.
Actually according to some recent articles I've been reading lately, they may not be losing money, but they aren't gaining money like they used to either, thus they have to search for more markets.

But how about the NAVY take another, and this time for even better reasons.
Take a look here for information on LFA SONAR systems and how they affect marine biology.

I'd imagine it would run off of a digital connection, so there would probably not be a TV tuner involved.

More Want to keep playing? Actually, just google for microsoft growth slowing and save me the time.
Here you go
Don't fret, you almost had some valid visual basic there.
