  1. Quiet Pangs of Guilt on Why Do People Switch To Linux? · · Score: 1

I must admit that after installing my Shrike RH9 isos I felt like I ought to be paying somebody for the privilege. As a home user, I use the system to host a slash-site. As much as I love Linux, I wouldn't touch it otherwise in the home 'cuz' after three years I haven't yet figured out how to get the printer working which is attached to a wireless server. So much as I regret it, I keep handing cash over to Mr. Gates.

  2. If only I Could Address my Printer?! on Windows User Experiments With Linux for 10 Days · · Score: 1

Who can argue with the advantages of Linux? Less malware, transparent, stable as all get out. I grew up on Microsoft but have used Linux for the important stuff, like setting up my website. But guess which OS words best to visit the site? Because I may want to print some of the articles, I use Windows.

  3. Just Like TIVO is Ganna Nuke Television. on DoubleClick Warns Against Ad-Blocking Browsers · · Score: 1

Ad blocking software is not gonna nix the net. The advertisers will accomodate, all to the benefit of the users. Regarding TIVO, I wonder if its any coincidence, but TV ads are increasingly entertaining. Humm, wonder why?

  4. Sounds like a Major stretch to me on The Threat From Life on Mars · · Score: 1

In order for bugs to kill us they generally need to have an intimate biological connection with us. It's far more likely that an 'AIDs' type microbe will hatch from the rainforest, rather than from extraterrestrial soil. Remember, most murders are domestic affairs!

  5. This isn't such a bad means of policy control on China Rewards Porn Snitches · · Score: 1

Remember in all of this, that government isn't an inherently bad thing. Government, when it works right, is the collective will of the people. Of course, when it doesn't work right it can become an oppression of one segment of the population by another. All governments, even democracies, are located somewhere in this continuum. I kind of like the idea of using an economic incentive for enforcement because it is a proxy for the will and motivation to succeed. The Chinese government is putting its money where its mouth is. If they really don't want pornography, they're going to have to pay for it an amount proportionate to how much the public wants, or doesn't want, to go along with the policy.

  6. Addictive, but subtle on Coffee is Addictive · · Score: 1

It's not that coffee is addictive that is surprising. Rather, it's the suble quality of coffee's addictive reward that is the twist. How could someting so illusive be so powerful? That's what I find so fascinating. I recently have written on the subject at the above link.

  7. Re:Well on Appeals Court Rules Against RIAA in DMCA Subpoena Case · · Score: 1

I agree with you point of view. I like the law, but I also like to download music files. I feel guilt ridden about the latter- tighter controls would enforce more discipline and help me with my weekness. However, I am happy from a legal point of view that the courts are being strict about the privacy of ip addresses. I am thinking for example about the potential ease with which various parties could get peoples' names from ISPs under the pretext of pursing a music case when their intent was different.
