  1. Re:I don't understand... on Open Source Social Bookmarking Service · · Score: 1
For me, I think (if I ever actually start doing it), I think it would be a good place to have my bookmarks. I don't care about the sharing, I just use a lot of computers and would like to be able to remember all those sites that I forget on a daily basis.

Agreed. I have been enjoying using A9 from Amazon. I primarily use it for research. Although it is not set up for sharing, it easily allows the addition of bookmarks, a search history, and is useful when you use a lot of computers.

The old one at dack.com (it's not there anymore?), and I mushed alot of the phrases together - my co-workers and I had a laugh about it.

It is the Bullshit Generator and it still exists. It certainly is a classic. ;)

  3. Re:Where's the problem here? on University Bans Wireless Access Points · · Score: 1
If those apartments belong to the University, and the presence of your access point harms/disrupts the operation of their own network then to me it looks like it is well within the rights of the university to demand this - and as they can't single out a specific access point to cause the problem it seems just that they require ALL to be shut down.

On the other if those apartments do not belong to the university, then I wouldn't see how they should even try and enforce this.

In either case, it's not much of an issue - and it's not a freedom of speech / censorship issue, since they DO allow private access to the internet by wired means...

Yes, but can't they just make guidelines for wireless security? This would not be picking on any single access point but would rather ensure that all access points follow a specific protocol. It may be said that they would have to go through the trouble to enforce this but they are still having to look for rogue access points with the current plan in place.

  4. Re:Why do "free" songs require credit card numbers on iTunes 4.5 Authentication Cracked · · Score: 2, Informative
But according to Apple on Wednesday, only about 5 million free songs have been redeemed.

That's because for a "free" song you had to give them your credit card number. I complained twice to Pepsi and Apple...never got a response. So, as far as I am concerned, they've fucked themselves on this one.

Actually, when signing up, the option was given to input a credit card number now or later. I opted for later. I have downloaded several songs with the Pepsi promotion but I still have yet to give them my credit card number. :P

I have to admit that I do like iTunes. It has a nice interface, the music store seems well designed, and I haven't run into any issues with the DRM yet. But still wouldn't mind seeing a new version of software like PlayFair that addresses iTunes 4.5.

  5. Cool technology upgrades... on Notebooks Replace Textbooks in Texas · · Score: 3, Insightful
While I am certainly for using technology in the classroom, I have found that like this story, laptops aren?t always used well. Furthermore the article states that it is quite a task to keep all of the laptops in repair.

I recognize the case of using electronic media because the physical media is not always easy to obtain in a timely manner. The article from above gives a mix of both sides of the fence. If utilized effectively, the laptops can be a great tool in class.

I have to admit, however, that the bundled software and the technology upgrades that are being added to these laptops seem like a good measure to assure that they will maintain use even with daily student abuse.

Cool technology upgrades, some of the people at my office could use those the way they handle equipment...

  6. For cardiovascular exercise... on New Gamepad Designed To Build Muscles? · · Score: 1
Personally, the best exercise game peripheral I have seen (other than the DDR dance pad) is the Cateye Game Bike. It apparently works with most speed related games.

Talk about some motivation to exercise (I have to win the race!). Plus with the variety of maps/tracks available, this seems like it would make exercise quite fun. Now only if I could get exercise like that when playing Quake...

  7. Not without security measures... on Is WiFi Access Worth $10/hour? · · Score: 5, Interesting
WiFi is certainly not worth $10 an hour. When I first heard about the T-Mobile Hotspots at the StarBucks locations, I had intiially thought that they were free to the customers. I however, quickly found out that this was not the case. True, T-Mobile has a comprehensive network of Hotspots but this still does not warrant the high price associated with simply using the WiFi connection at a StarBucks.

perhaps, if the account that you pay for at StarBucks would at least allow for implementation of a RADIUS server and authentication by certificates, then perhaps the $10 and hour would be somewhat warranted. In the meantime, however, this just ends up being a factor of greed on the part of StarBucks and T-Mobile. Really, this should be a value adding benifit for the people who frequent StarBucks and pay $4 for a mocha not a service above and beyond the coffee.

Oh, and have you ever been to a hotspot and tried to get some information from the workers there? Not to be rude, as I'm sure that they are proficient at making a Latte, but would it hurt to at least tell them a couple things about wireless networks? Everytime I ask them anything, I get shrugs and answers such as "I don't know. They just have a guy come in and check on that [the access point] every now and then". Note, these are not complicated questions either. I ask if this is an A,B, or G network and the barista's eyes glaze over.

Oh well, at least free hotspots are much more plentiful in my hometown than the author of the article alludes to in France. Hey, word is they are even setting up the entire town next to me for a citywide WiFi network...
