  1. Re:Quandary? on Hitchhiker's Guide Quandary Phase Starts May 3rd · · Score: 2, Informative

Maybe I'm missing some sublety of the Queen's English, but I thought the fourth in a series is the QUATERNARY and the fifth is the QUINARY.

Please enlighten me if I'm missing the joke or something. They do identify the previous phase as the TERTIARY.

You're missing the joke. A quandary is a "state of uncertainty or perplexity", and something that is quintessential "[represents] the perfect example of a class or quality." They're puns, in other words (ahaha).

Music/Video player/Game player with camera, gameboy-sized screen and TV output and still feasable to fit in the pocket. Will not displace iPod, but will sure have it's own market. Pictures/video at iPod original size are IMHO useless.

Except for the camera bit, you've pretty much exactly described the Archos Gmini 400 - almost exactly the same size and weight as the 20GB iPod, but with a color screen, video/photo support, TV-out, and the Mophun system, all for about 50 dollars more. The Gmini 400 seems to me to be the future of iPod competition - rather than try to compete on more-or-less equal footing with the iPod, like Creative seems determined to do with its players, the Gmini 400 instead focuses on all kinds of stuff which the iPod can't do. Creative will never come up with a player that matches the simplicity and ease of use of the iPod, so why not take a page out of Archos' book and not even bother trying?

What on earth are you talking about? That's not a monopoly, that's just restricted use. A monopoly is 'exclusive control by one group of the means of producing or selling a commodity or service'. And, last time I checked, Apple wasn't the only source out there for legal music downloading - look at Napster, AllofMp3, or eMusic. All are legit, all provide alternatives (albeit poor ones, but that's neither here nor there). Now, if Apple were the only music download retailer around, then yes, that would be a monopoly. But they aren't, so they're not.

To put it another way, say Ford releases a car which only runs on Ford brand gas. Does that make Ford a monopoly all of a sudden? Of course not! So why should iTunes be any different?

That's what people mean when they say Linux is difficult to use, and four year old girls, no matter how cute and cuddly, do nothing to address that. Damn straight. The four year old boys, on the other hand, they're the innovative ones.

  7. Re:Jobs going overboard? on Steve Jobs' Grand Vision · · Score: 2, Informative

No, Pixar wasn't around before Jobs - prior to its spinoff and subsequent purchase by Jobs in 1986, it was just the tiny computer graphics division of LucasFilm. It was Jobs who took Pixar from being just another small animation studio to being the powerhouse that it is. Your point is valid, though - look at what happened the last time Jobs tried to run two companies simultaneously, Pixar and NeXT. Short version: NeXT came up with some great stuff but financially didn't do as well as hoped, so Jobs got bored and started ignoring it for Pixar. NeXT then just kinda floundered along until it was snapped up by Apple. Not really a corporate success story.

  8. Re:Can someone explain please? on H2G2 Cast Finalized, Starts Shooting in April · · Score: 4, Informative

H2G2 is just a different way of saying HHGG, which in turn is an abbreviation of HHGttG. The 2s are used to state the amounts of the different letters, not in place of 'to'.

You know you're lazy when an acronym is too much effort to type.
