  1. Re:Likely cost breakdown on Napster Launches UK Music Service · · Score: 1

My housemate downloads large amounts of music - as he puts it - "I paid for it once on vinyl, once on tape, once on CD. After my CD's were stolen did they really think I was gonna buy them all over again?"

Right on! When my laptop was stolen, there was no way I was going to pay for another one, so I stole one. I mean, I already paid for it once, right?

  2. Re:Hmm.. on Update on Playfair · · Score: 1

Why not spend money on getting some artists some real music lessons [e.g. less titney spears, more composers, real music!] more music on better technology [e.g. more capacity, better fidelity, more resilient to damage] and such instead of trying to sue 12 year olds for ripping CDs they bought.

So, if the music sucks, it's okay to steal it? And who's suing 12 year olds for ripping their own cd's?

  3. Re:could the fans help on Simpsons Actors on Strike · · Score: 4, Insightful

Please tell me that this is supposed to be funny. These guys make more in a half hour (6-8 hours of real work according to one of the articles) then I do 2 1/2 years. Not to mention the residuals they get from syndication, which I'm sure add up to a pretty penny. I think $125,000 an episode is plenty back.

  4. Re:Question from non-usa on Comcast Wants To Buy Disney For $66 Billion · · Score: 5, Informative

Comcast is more of just a cable company. They are a media company, closer to the likes of Disney then you might think. They are a majority shareholder in the QVC channel, have a controlling interest in the E! Entertainment channel, own the Golf channel and Outdoor Life networks, own the G4 games channel, and own several sports teams.

  5. Re:Sad to be alone on Star Trek: Enterprise in Danger of Being Cancelled · · Score: 1

You're not alone. Generally people who don't like stuff are a lot more vocal about it then people who do like stuff.

Enterprise is far better then Voyager and DS9. And while I still like TNG, the characters in Enterprise are more complex (to me anyway though I'm sure there will be many who disagree). This season is definitely better then the previous two, and I really hope they don't cancel it.

  6. Re:Finally fighting back on Tech Firms Defend Moving Jobs Overseas · · Score: 1

Well if HP didn't lobby for (and get) huge amounts of tax breaks (corporate welfare) I wouldn't mind so much about Carly's statements. Tax breaks are generally given to companies that provide something for the community or country that they operate in, most often in the form of jobs. If HP ships high paying jobs off to a foreign land, then they should stop getting the tax breaks. And if they want the tax breaks, they should keep the jobs here. Moving high paying IT jobs away doesn't just hurt the people who lose those jobs, it hurts the entire community where those people live and spend their paycheck.

information wants to be free, not cheap

In that case, please send me all of your usernames and passwords, as well as the PIN to your bank account. I'll happily take anything you've ever written in a private journal as well. Your information, after all, wants to be free. Or maybe it's up to the owners of the information, how it gets used. But, if you disagree, please free your information. Thanks!

  8. Re:Java : C :: Emacs : vi on The Next Path for Joy · · Score: 1

I think the point that Joy is making, is only helped by your statement. You qualify your statement with 'an experienced C programmer....' Well, not all poplular software is written by experienced programmers. Lots of stuff is written by inexperienced programmers, and always will be. And lots of programmers are lazy as all hell. If a language has a built in way to deal with the programmers inexperience/laziness, then that's a good thing.

  9. Re:Yet another music service? on Dell Announces New Music Player, Download Service · · Score: 5, Insightful

What, may I ask, is draconian about the iTunes music store's copy-protection measures? I can put the files I've bought on my three Macs, I can burn as many CDs as I want and give them to my friends and family to listen to (or listen to them [the burnt CDs] on any other computer), and I can put them on my iPod. No, I can't share them with complete strangers, but I'm not likely to that with anything else I own either. It's pretty darned reasonable in my eyes.

"First, these activities do not cost people money...hacked web sites costs people time"
I don't know about you, but I get paid money for my time. And if I have to fix my companies web site, then it's costing my employer (who happens to be a person, not a corporation) money.

No, I mean the other one.

  12. Re:NYT reg... on Video Chat Software Reviewed · · Score: 1, Troll

And how hard is it to register? The amount of time you spend doing 'that' and 'that' each time you want to look at a NYT article far exceeds the time it takes to register and log in once. God forbid the NYT gets a little marketing info out of you in exchange for great reporting.
