    There is a reason for transmitting a "Hello World!" from the AC powered AP: It results in less battery drain on the portable devices (phones, tablets, laptops) that want to connect to the AP. That is, it requires more effort (aka battery power) on the part of the portable device to find a hidden AP than to find a non-hidden AP.

    Windows Phone 7.5 now supports hidden SSID, which is the ability to connect WP7.5 devices to a wireless network that is not broadcasting its SSID. But this new feature is dependent on the chipset and drivers of the device, he says, so it's not available on current WP7 devices. It could be available on new WP7.5 hardware in the future, though, according to Bryan

    Bryan also notes that "[s]ome organizations use SSID so as not to broadcast their wireless network information. However, it is widely recognized that this does not provide a material security benefit."

    If one buys gasoline in the USA, then one pays the Federal gas tax.
    If one has phone service, then one pays the Federal Universal Service 'fee' tax.
    If one earns any income, then one pays Social Security and Medicare Federal taxes.

    Those are 3 that spring to mind off the top of my head. Federal income tax is not the only federal tax out there.

    Regardless, you seem concerned that someone would get to vote when they did not pay taxes. Suppose there was a nominal 1 cent federal tax that all Americans of voting age had to pay, would that address your concern? Or should there be some greater payment required to be eligible to vote? Or perhaps the more you pay in taxes the more votes you get?

    I don't have a master's degree in credit rating, so the mathematical difference between "AAA" and "AA+" eludes me. Why can't they assign a number as a rating, e.g. AAA=100="We expect that you will on average receive 100% of the principal and interest promised by the borrower.", Caa1=40="We expect that you will on average get 40% of the principal and interest promised by the borrower.

    Seems using numbers like that would be simpler, more informative, and less obscure than "We rate this debt Baa2." Or do the raters like obscurity?

    Regardless, I would be interested in knowing how accurate the past ratings have been. We all know the agencies absolutely blew the whole sub-prime "AAA" crap a few years ago.

    Thank you for the info, I was unaware that the tax laws allowed for gambling expenditures to be deducted against winnings.

    I am left baffled as to what the benefit to humanity is from that allowance in the tax code.

    I think the point of the lottery is to make as much money as possible for the state. That's why the state advertises lotteries so heavily.

    If the state eliminated the rolldown weeks, and just ran the lottery the same way with the same payouts every week, would the state make more money?

    The $200,000 investment would presumably be after tax money. The 280,000 dollars in winnings would be taxable. At the Bush Tax Cut marginal rate of 35% that would leave 182,000, for a net loss of $18,000. Presumably the bettors must also be finding a way to game the tax system as well.

    Why would I give my SSN to a game company whose services I purchase? Why would they ask for my SSN?

    If I don't give them my SSN then it won't be vulnerable to being stolen off their servers. That's the ultimate in security.

    unlike every other power source, really terrible consequences stay with you for centuries.

    How long does CO2 emitted from burning fossil fuels stay in the atmosphere? How long does the greenhouse effect keep warming the planet even after CO2 emissions are stabiliized? Are there any long-term consequences of global warming that some people would consider "terrible"?

    Blowing up a frog with a stick of dynamite is a lot more dramatic than putting it in a pot of water and gradually increasing the temperature to a boil, but the consequences for the frog in both cases are that its life ends.

    Second, you only pay income tax on your net income.

    My understanding is that the USA government takes 7.65% of my paycheck for SS and Medicare taxes (i.e. to transfer this money from me to older people.) This 7.65% does not appear as "net income" to me. Yet as far as I can tell I still pay income tax on this 7.65%. So I'm paying income tax on money that is not net income to me. Correct me if I'm wrong so I can refile. Thanks.

    There were 7 Apollo missions that attempted to land men on the moon. 6 of those were successful. In each of those 2 men landed on the moon. So 12 men walked on the moon.

    Who do you trust: The phone company, the phone, or the user?

    If you trust the phone company, then having a cellphone contract option to limit data/text/etc. usage to some cap can mitigate the worst case bill you'll be surprised with.
    If you trust the phone, then OS options to limit what an app can do can mitigate worse case damage done.
    In either case, you have to trust the user to make the right choices with respect to cellphone contract or app permissions.

    I think my problem is that I don't trust any of the above.

    Agreements signed while someone has a gun pointed to your head (or 52 of your citizens heads) are considered valid by the courts? A crime can be committed against your person but your government can retroactively declare that it wasn't a crime?

    My status update might be "Just got off the plane in New York". Presumably I can sell that information outside of Facebook and this rule #4 is only restricting me from handing a link to my Facebook profile to an advertiser.

    Alternate interpretation of rule #4 would be that if you accept the Facebook Principles then "All your personal information are belong to Facebook".

    It won't be the PRC government that prevents them from getting money, it will be the USA government that stops them. The hostages held by Iran for 444 days tried to sue (there were substantial Iranian assets in the US that had been frozen and could be used to pay damages), but they lost their lawsuit not because of any defence put on by Iran but rather by the US government.

    If the USA government does that to protect a state which it considers an enemy (Iran), imagine what they will do to protect the PRC to which they owe a trillion dollars or so.

    Excellent post. One additional feature that I would like to see would be to prioritize my traffic between "high priority, need it asap" or "this is low priority, non-realtime data, just use bandwidth when that bandwidth would otherwise go unused". The latter could be billed at a discounted rate from the former.

    The Veterans Administration runs a health care system too. Your post made me wonder if the US military had invented a health care model that was more efficient than either the private insurance system or medicare?
