  1. Beta software? on Microsoft's IE7 Search Box Bugs Google · · Score: 1

Can anyone say BETA software? As in, not final yet? Stop complaining about anti-trust issues on a product that hasn't even been released yet...

  2. Anyone know how this is legal? on Legal Music Downloads Increase in 2005 · · Score: 1

I just found this site today and can't believe that there is any way it would be legal in the US. It seems pretty industrial strength, as it uses Akamai to host all it's content, but I can't understand how they are able to host all the copyrighted content. http://www.id1g1t.com/search.php

  3. Anyone with Asterisk can do this on Caller ID Spoofing Firm Gets Death Threats · · Score: 1

Anyone with the open source PBX package Asterisk and a VOIP provider (or a T1) can set their CID to whatever they want. We have used this feature to handle an automated appointment confirmation system. Basically, we set the caller id to the business requesting the confirmation, and make the call to the customer. That way, the ID shows up as the business that they have the appointment with, instead of the confirmation company. Saves a bunch of hassle and makes return calls much easier. This seems like a pretty legitimate use of CID spoofing... This is nothing new... We've been doing it for over a year. Spoofing caller ID won't make any difference to law enforcement or telcos. They use a completely different system for determining the originating number.

Not such a simple fact. Try 'telnet your-favorite-mail-server.com 25' and watch it connect. Works for me and my comcast connection everytime.

I was under the impression that recent versions of Windows had fairly good fine grained access controls. Sure, windows 98 doesn't offer a whole lot in terms of security, but 2000 and XP aren't so bad. So I guess I'd have to disagree... Windows does have such a (working) thing. Why do you say it doesn't?

I think they should break off right now while they have the chance. Call 10.4 "Rubber Duck", "Smokey the Bear", or "Good Buddy". Ya know, keeping with the 10-4 CB theme...

  7. Re:Conductivity? on Sapphire: A Liquid That Won't Get Things Wet · · Score: 1

Pure water is a very good insulator. It's only the impurities that conduct electricity. So if you can just keep your water pure (probably near impossible), then why not just use water?

  8. Re:Bandwidth Shared with neighbors on Court Ruling Points Way To Broadband Regulation · · Score: 1

This doesn't seem quite right... In an uncapped system, one user could potentially use all the bandwidth if he was the ONLY user (and then who cares?). Once you add a second user, each can only use half the bandwidth (if they are both utilizing their connection 100%). Three users, each gets 1/3. True that with a few high utilization users, you could hit the bandwidth limit of the line, but I don't think one user in a multiuser scenario can monopolize all the bandwidth.

    >> Oh, and don't wear deodorant ... it contains aluminium which will cause it to be dragged through your arm... ouch. Wrong! Aluminum is not magnetic. Besides, even if it were, deodorants contain aluminum salts, not pure aluminum. That's like saying it's dangerous to put salt (NaCl) in water because the sodium will explode. The reason they don't want you to wear deodorant is because it can show up on the imaging.
