Right, because legalizing the possession of kiddie porn and allow it to be sold isn't going to increase demand, encouraging people to make more kiddie porn because they have a better chance of making money on it.

I don't think you thought that one through.

Wrong. People swap kiddie porn all the time. There have been numerous busts of child abuse rings where people were swapping homemade kiddie porn.

A lot of people, pedo or otherwise, get off knowing that someone is watching them and getting off themselves. People make porn to be watched, and even if it's free, knowing that it's being watched can encourage them to make more. Is that true in every case? No, but why the hell else would someone distribute their homemade kiddie porn? And getting feedback from other sickos only encourages them to make more. It encourages other sickos to make their own. Again, not true in every case, but true enough that I'm glad kiddie porn is illegal.

On top of that, a lot of the self-taught people I've seen may be pretty darned good at some things in their discipline, but have little to no knowledge in other important areas that they may not encounter until they hit the workforce. The degree shows that you've at least been exposed to a more comprehensive curriculum and should have a solid base of knowledge and skills upon which to build. No, this does not represent every case. You can have lazy college assholes who muddled their way through the degree and you can have self-taught guys who were quite comprehensive in their studies, but that's the exception, not the norm.

However, most of either negative type are often weeded out in the interview process. The thing is, a degree is easily verifiable. Self-taught isn't unless you've got a lot of accomplishments and professional references under your belt. HR is more likely to pick largely grads and maybe a few self-taught guys with serious credentials, then weed out the bozos in either category with interviews.

  18. Re:Hmm on Windows Phone 7 Sales Continue To Struggle · · Score: 1

I'm saying that the market has been largely defined and has gone much further than a niche. The console market was largely a niche for geeks and pretty hardcore gamers. The XBox had superior hardware, a killer game, and helped push that market further into the mainstream (although not as much as the Wii has). MS really doesn't have anything superior for WP7. They don't have a Halo for it. It's just another unremarkable smartphone in a market that already has some highly recognizable brand names. Yes, there is plenty of room for growth, but not if your product can't stand out among the competition.

  19. Re:Hmm on Windows Phone 7 Sales Continue To Struggle · · Score: 1

Also, there was still plenty of room for growth in the console market and MS actually had a product that was, in many ways, superior to the competition. They also had Halo as the killer game. Consoles still hadn't grown far beyond the geek/heavy gamer niche when MS brought the XBox out. This is more like the Zune. MS gets to the party quite late and finds that the market has already solidified pretty well.

If someone is interested in developing a commercial game with Linux, don't you think they'll want to check the waters first? And when they see "OMG CLOSED SOURCE FUCK OFF", they'll probably can the idea. It's no secret that a large portion of the Linux desktop userbase thinks like this.

Furthermore, I've seen PLENTY of hardcore gamers who are utterly clueless. Why else would people blow money on Alienware? You are completely mistaken in thinking that hardcore gamers are interested in how a computer works. Most don't really care. They just want the computer to run their games.

  24. Re:A nice gesture on Company Seeks To Boost Linux Game Development With 3D Engine Giveaway · · Score: 2, Insightful

Nonsense. If people were hardcore gamers then they wouldn't be running only Linux in the first place. There are some that run Linux and use games in Wine, but there aren't as many as you make out. Furthermore, those who do are usually savvy enough to get games running in Wine. Most Mac users have a hard time figuring out how to dual boot, and Crossover in OS X has much crappier performance than Wine in Linux. As such, combined with Apple having, at minimum, five times the marketshare as Linux on the desktop, you have game devs far more likely to port games to OS X than Linux. That's the state of things. I think Linux users can expect devs to try and make sure they don't break Wine compatibility at the very best.

Zealots like you are exactly what is wrong with Linux right now. Linux can be free and open all you want, but when you expect software vendors to strictly do the same and badmouth those who don't, you're driving developers away. Less software = less users, plain and simple.
